SVB collapse is second-largest bank failure in US history

Silicon Valley Bank collapsed Friday morning after a stunning 48 hours in which a bank run and a capital crisis led to the second-largest failure of a financial institution in US history.
California regulators closed down the tech lender and put it under the control of the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The FDIC is acting as a receiver, which typically means it will liquidate the bank’s assets to pay back its customers, including depositors and creditors.
The FDIC, an independent government agency that insures bank deposits and oversees financial institutions, said all insured depositors will have full access to their insured deposits by no later than Monday morning. It said it would pay uninsured depositors an “advance dividend within the next week.” CNN's Matt Egan reports. #CNN #MattEgan #cnnnewsroom

It was a very bad decision to remove the Glass-Steagall Act in the late 1990s, which led to the spectacular failure of huge banks during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. To prevent another disaster, Dodd-Frank and this statute both need to be reestablished right away. What happened with SVB is only the beginning of what will happen if nothing is done to address the current situation.

Wall Street pitched so-called quality stocks with high profitability and low debt, as a kind of insurance against whatever the economy might throw at you. Quality stocks have underperformed the S&P500 this year, My $200k portfolio is down by approximately 20 %, any recommendations to scale up my returns on investment.

I work in banking. It really depends on how liquidity is managed by the bank. With the interest rate hikes people myself included have opened new bank accounts and transferred money to get the best rate on deposit. This is problematic when the banks have invested most of the deposits on fixed rate treasuries and cannot offer competitive rates for their depositors. If they bought the US treasuries at a lower fixed rate and people are pulling their deposits to park it somewhere else the bank would have to forcefully sell their treasury positions at a lower market value to provide liquidity which can cause huge realized losses for the bank!

So reasonable people would expect them to do the same again at a magnified rate. Which they did. Most of the low rate treasuries you speak of we’re NEVER HEDGED. Absolute and utter stupidity. A damn second grader could tell you interest rates don’t remain at Zero indefinitely. Idiots.

The Fed should have started raising rates much earlier and much slower. You can't go back, but you can at least learn. They need to take it easy for the long run, that's for sure. 2% Inflation is also an unstable threshold as we witnessed before. 2.5 would be easier to maintain, but then again the level beneath 2% was a very stubborn to change too. @@ERICK-di1yz I don’t know what would happen. One possibility is that the US government would step in and have taxpayers pay for it. In the past the government has stepped in to prevent companies like General Motors from going bankrupt to save jobs which meant taxpayers paid for it. GM eventually paid it back. Notice that crypto companies that weren’t FDIC insured like Celsius had runs that completely bankrupted them which then led to contagion so that other companies like Voyager went bankrupt as well because clients thought that if it happened to Celsius maybe it would happen to them. The whole idea behind FDIC insurance is that if one bank goes bankrupt it doesn’t lead to other banks going bankrupt because people will hopefully feel their money is safe up to 250K.
