Something that is so over looked when it comes to compression rings is they help keep collimation in check. With out a compression ring whatever is been clamped is been push to one side while with a compression ring its been squeezed into place in the middle. It might only been a very small movement but if you add a barlow as well I think the effect is quite noticeable.

That's a great tip! Especially when collimating on a star. Having the compression ring ensure the ep is nicely centered. Sometimes I use my Cheshire ep to get a good look at the system and again the svbony is perfect.

That's a good price.....I got one from William Optics which is virtually identical to this one except that it cost me £105 from FLO. I have a small (102mm) telescope so I need every bit of light that I can get and these dielectric mirrors certainly do the job.

Compression rings, great idea. I'm going to have to get one of those now. The thumbscrew could be unreliable at star parties when people mistakenly would grab at the eyepiece. Thanks for letting us know about this!

Firstly, after retiring I bought a 105mm refractor about 18 months ago. I've found your videos very helpful as a lot of those out there are not really aimed at beginners on a budget. I started taking your advice on SVBony stuff. Bought an 8-24 zoom (which you don't like) :) and then 20, 9 & 6 x 68 deg EP's and plus a 15x72 deg . After a mishap I also bought this diagonal, whilst I am very happy with them all, I did get a beginners surprise, last night to see that Saturn seems to travel West to East across the Southern sky. :) I'll get used to it I suppose. Keep them coming. Thanks again.

The ring method of securing eyepiece tends to keep eyepiece straighter and light path straight. Better view when path remains centered.

Another advantage of dielectric vs. prism diagonals. Prism types are ok with F7 or slower scopes, but with faster scopes they can produce color dispersion as the light rays are at a steeper angle with fast scopes. Here a mirror diagonal saves the day. Doesn’t contribute to chromatic dispersion❤

Great review!! I was just on Amazon looking for an affordable upgrade for my recently purchased Celestron Omni 102 AZ.. and was basically overwhelmed by the number of choices. Especially since I’m new to this and don’t really know a lot about it. I saw this particular diagonal listed before I watched this review.. but still wasn’t sure. Now I am sure.. and I went ahead and ordered one.

One thing to remember, especially for MCT & SCT owners because of their long focuser travel, is a diagonal isn't mandatory. No matter how good the reflectivity, if it doesn't provide ergonomic benefit on your target and you have enough back-focus without it, removing the diagonal and viewing straight-through will always provide brighter views.

Nice tips for these types of telescope; Japanese are purists in that department ;) However for 90% of European population, light pollution is too present to allow viewing anything too low in the horizon unfortunately. And I won't try aiming around the zenith without a diagonal ;)

Thank you for the review. I've been looking at this exact diagonal to replace the one that came with my telescope. With regards to SVBONY, I have 2 barlows that were given to me with the telescope (both svbony) and I'm not sure of their quality but I don't have anything to compare them with. The image quality takes a huge hit with the 2x barlow (the other is a 5x which is essentially useless).

I have the 1.25” on my 50mm Svbony finder scope and 2” version on my 127mm refractor. Both are great. The 2” has a potentially unique advantage as the telescope side tube is fully threaded internally which allowed me to cut the tube to get me back into focus when I added a 2” Astromania filter wheel. The dielectric diagonal supplied with my telescope was only threaded about 10mm deep and of course the body of neither diagonal was threaded to 48 mm where I could have used an off the shelf extension.

I have one model down from this diagonal. Love the quality of the unit. One thing I wish that Svbony would do……..I have my childhood scope that uses .965 eyepieces. This diagonal has a nose piece that unscrews. I would love to see them release a .965 nose piece so that I can use this as a hybrid diagonal. I emailed them about this and never heard back from them. Perhaps you can make this suggestion as well. I think that a lot of folks with older scopes would jump on this accessory if the price is reasonable.

Just bought a slightly used Celestron CPC 1100 and it came with a Zhumell 2" 90 degree coated mirror diagonal. Cannot find anything about this one, but is sure resembles all the features you discuss about higher end diagonals like the interior coating, threaded for cameras and filters, compression ring and such. No part number on it that I can find, but it looks remarkably like the Orion 2" star diagonal. What can you tell me about this diagonal?

Hello! I just bought a 50080 vultus (it’s dutch) telescope. My question is, is it a good telescope? The lenses it comes with are 25 and 10mm eyepieces and a 4mm aspheric eyepiece and a 3x barlow lens, its focal length is 500mm and the apature size is 83,2 mm and (using your method of calculation) it has 375x zoom. So yeah, is it a good beginner telescope and what other lenses should i buy?

Be careful when disassembling the Barlow lens and screwing it between the focus tube and the diagonal, we must consider that in this case we are altering the multiplying factor of the Barlow lens. The nominal magnification factor of a Barlow lens is calculated based on two things: the eyepiece will always be placed at a certain distance; and in the focal length of the Barlow lens itself. The multiplying factor is proportional to the distance from the lens to the eyepiece, and since the focal length of the Barlow lens does not change (no matter where it is placed), we can say that as the distance to the eyepiece increases, the multiplying factor increases, and vice versa. If between the Barlow lens and the eyepiece we put such an element as a diagonal, which somehow "extends" the path of light, then most likely we are increasing the distance between the eyepiece and the Barlow lens, relative to the native Barlow distance (which we can measure ourselves, since it roughly corresponds to the hollow part of the Barlow tube), so we are also increasing the magnification factor. And if we increase it, we may run the risk of viewing at inappropriately high magnifications, or experiencing disturbing visual artifacts or aberrations in the field of view. For this reason it is often recommended to place the Barlow lenses behind the diagonal.

You must save your diagonal for use in a refractor or a catadioptric, as Newtons are not set up to support diagonals. You see blurry because you can't focus correctly, since you lack intrafocus. In fact, the observation position in a Newton is usually very comfortable without the need to use a diagonal.

A couple of months ago I purchased a similar one of a different make from the South American River. The side panels on mine were not blackened on the inside but I took them off with an Allen key and used car primer and matt black spray paint to correct that. and saved myself about £15. A significant improvement in image quality compared to my prism diagonal but remember that the image is reversed left to right, which takes a bit of getting used to..

Hello there, sounds like you are not using enough magnification... With your current setup you are getting about 40 X.. When viewing the planets you do need quite a lot of magnification to have any chance of seeing detail or size.. Try a 12mm eyepiece with your barlow which will give you about 116 x... Its important though not to use to much magnification every telescope has it's max and the maximum power for your telescope is 120X.. Hope this helps. Clear skies 🙂

Should have better explained why "Dielectric-Coated". I did a little research cause I did not get the 99% reflective idea. Just assumed a good mirror is, a good mirror, and all were about 99% (and all Good one's are). BUT - Dielectric-Coated = "In general", "dielectric coatings are harder, have higher reflectivity and higher damage thresholds than metal coatings" took this from a website that explained it. Sold me. And they are not over priced, just because Dielectric-Coated sounds cool.

Small error: It isn't blackned inside so there is a chance that in lots of light there will be red reflections inside - but I never had problem with it. Most problematic diagonals are erect diagonals that have multiple reflection surfaces and frequently have both internal reflection. For me upgrading standard erecting diagonal to this dialectic was significant update.
