At the 26 to 27 minute mark she makes a great point about the tutorial. I've made a similar case that the tutorial does a terrible job of introducing the game. The devs need to make a tutorial mode for each character so that if a player wants to play a specific character you can learn the fundamentals

agreed.. when i first started playing overwatch i didn't understand half the characters and i'm the kind of person who hates to figure it out using a training grounds i prefer to just play and figure it out as i go (wich is where for me now random heroes comes in.. it's actually gotten me into several heroes that i didn't think i'd ever really enjoy.. like Torbjorn.. since i used to play tf2 i thought oh he's just gonna be another engineer kind of character that just stands behind his turret with his hammer to keep it alive.. i don't like that so i prefer something else.. or how i didn't understand anything about doomfist in the beginning now i'm starting to get to know the character more and i realise he's not that bad after all.) like some of the characters are very straightforward but others not so much or i take my ideas about them from another source that is similar but not entirely correct. and i'll often pick a few characters going off design and their skills. one of the characters that intrigued me from the start for example would be Symmetra. even though she had turrets it was clear to me from the start that shooting those orbs was a lot of fun and extremely satisfying to kill people with.. then there are some characters i liked just from design like D.va i mean who doesn't like a badass Mech that packs a punch. now some of the characters weren't out yet back then and i took a little break so when i returned there were a few new characters and immideately i was quite interested in Sigma. the guy seemed interesting and i didn't even realise he was Dutch.. (i am Dutch myself) so when i first heard the ult being someone who doesn't expect a character to even speak dutch in a game i was very confused and didn't understand what he was saying right at all.. what i heard was something something synchronize but in reality he was actually speaking dutch and my brain just couldn't process what language it could possibly be.. then i got the Oranje recolor and to my friend i went "uh what Oranje?" and then he went on to explain the dude was actually dutch and i explained how my brain completely butchered his ult line

honestly there are still basic things about the game that i barely understand. for example I just learned like a month ago that defenders don't have to be near the payload to make it start moving backwards.. there are a lot of things the game just doesn't explain to you and you just learn through trial and error

Yeah I think this really highlighted for me what I already felt - which is that the tutorial system of OW really leaves you out to dry. The expectation is that you will figure this out yourself/watch guides and I think Blizzard have deliberately kept it light on information to try and make it seem less daunting to new players. Ironically, I think it makes it harder for new players to get into the game!

Yeah totally. Overwatch is useless at explaining how to play the game, and there's no internal reference. Like for goodness sake we don't even have good damage numbers so you just have to remember at this point if/when certain things one-shot you.

@@SVBOW yeah I look back on the fact that I got this game on release and the main way I learned was via teammates teaching each other new things they recently learned. I think it's similar to my experience trying to pick up MMORPGs since I haven't been there from the start and struggle to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing. If you want to pick up a game that's been around for ages, you need one or more patient friends who are willing to show you the ropes. Or you religiously watch people who commentate on their gameplay on KZbin, until you figure it out (e.g. I learned how to play Dota 2 entirely from watching Purge) I've just accepted that the only games that have sufficient tutorials are ones that are intended to be fully solo experiences.

Watching you help Lulu play Moira reminded me of when I taught my girlfriend how to play Overwatch. I started her off playing Mei as well as Moira, and I did a lot of the same things you were doing to keep her engaged and give her feedback. Things like saying "That's a great orb!" or "Nice job!" or "You got her!" seemed to really help her, and I know it was the same for my girlfriend. When she would play Mei and go against a Reinhardt, I would say "Harass him!" to get her to go forward, get behind his shield, and freeze him, or force him to drop shield and run. I'd also say things like "If you're in trouble, press [this button]," so she would ice block. Lulu herself mentioned the key thing to getting new players to stay with the game, and that's immediate feedback and evidence of progress. When you say "Nice orb" she immediately understands that she did something correct and she can learn to recognize similar situations on her own later. It might just be a pipe dream, but what if Overwatch had something like an "Assist Mode?" The game could keep track of your inputs and the situation and give you that encouragement when you do something right (maybe "Great Kill!" shows up on screen with a satisfying sound or a character compliments your actions). After the game, it could pull up your stats front and center and show how you've improved compared to the last game. Granted, putting this kind of thing in the game could add to the information overload problem, and it would be a difficult system to get working, but I think this video shows that one of the only ways to get into Overwatch as someone completely new to the genre or games as a whole is to have a friend who is already familiar help you and encourage you. Not everyone can get that experience, but maybe Overwatch just needs more feedback to keep new players engaged.
@Bazilisk_AU
@Bazilisk_AU 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed ! Assist Mode would get annoying the more you understand the game, so you'd turn it off after a while, but would be great for beginners ! The game doesn't do a good job of providing you Positive Reinforcement for doing something good, or tell you When you've done something wrong, so an Assist mode would help greatly ! (Like, a lot of new players don't even realise when they've died because the transition from Visual Clutter to More Visual Clutter but from a 3rd person PoV is too seamless. It's only when you realise "Oh wait... I can't control my character anymore, I'm dead"
@Jompe69
@Jompe69 3 жыл бұрын
There surely is a lot of visual clutter in the game right now. The assist mode would be great, I feel like support heroes are the only ones that give you some sort of "I'm doing something" with the CRITICAL on teammates and them no longer being critical after you heal them. DPS heroes and Tanks sort of give you a feeling of, I'm doing something when you kill an enemy or get an assist, but it doesn't really tell you straight up what did you did well or should be doing otherwise. Tanks can seem very difficult as they don't really get the oomf, when for example blocking damage or eating important abilities or contesting point
@aldescora
@aldescora 3 жыл бұрын
honestly Valorant does a great way of doing this without actual voices, every kill gives a very obvious and rewarding sound and graphic, therefore encouraging you to do it again. Overwatch really sucks at it if you cant get more than 1 kill. also the game is a cluttered mess even with low FX enabled so that doesnt help
@Jompe69
@Jompe69 3 жыл бұрын
@@aldescora Valorant is a quite of a mess on it's own too. So many different abilities that you need be aware of, maps have a million different corners you need to clear. I think the game also doesn't clearly show when a round is lost, won or has ended. Flashes, smokes and other abilities cluttering what you can see
@olkekaja6289
@olkekaja6289 3 жыл бұрын
I like that idea. But I would also add like a statistics in the end in which you can see all the situations in which you successfully escaped a threat or maybe secured a kill by abilities. The reason for that is that a simple message on screen will add even more input which new player will be overwhelmed with.

Having recently brought 3 of my friends into Overwatch, I too found most of the same examples as you did - where the game simply doesn't tell anything, and at the same time overloads you with information. On top of that, getting to an actual decent level with one hero you probably need 50-100 levels just playing that character, which means a huge portion of the game is often left unexplored for a long time. I actually went and made two separate Overwatch guides (written, complimented by picture examples and videos) to get my friends up to speed on all the stuff that the game tutorial failed to explain. I imagine that Overwatch could easily benefit from 3 separate in-depth tutorials that can be available at any point, as a sort of "if you struggle with the game, try X, Y, or Z tutorial to understand these elements in greater detail". For example, one tutorial should only focus on hero mechanics alone. Next would be enemy interactions, and last would be core game objectives - but make sure to divide them all so that you aren't overloaded with non-relating information right out of the gate. The current tutorial feels more like a speedrun, rather than an explaining guide. It throws all the utmost basic information at you immediately, but it doesn't really let you test any of the elements separately until you understand them enough to move on. It presents Overwatch as if it is COD, but it is not - and then people get into games and are totally confused because all the things that would seem straight forward like in COD, are totally different and offer zero value, while at the same time you are overwhelmed with everything going on and no context for any of it or how you should be reacting to what you see. I wonder if we, as a community, could perhaps create custom gamemodes as tutorials and help push Blizzard to actually take this seriously. The way I imagine it could work, would be; - 3 initial tutorials for the complete beginner who is fresh into the game (one for mechanics, one for enemy encounters, one for map objectives). - One tutorial at level 10 that primarily focuses on elements that aren't self explanatory, and helps declutter all the visual information going on (generally related to high impact abilities that don't explain themselves when used). - One tutorial at level 20 for each individual role (dps, tank, support) so that people can be mentally prepared for potential competitive play, by understanding the basics of what their role is on the team, and then have at least 5 levels to practice the content of the tutorial. I'd happily provide the pdf guide I made for my friends, as it seems like it did help them quite a bit. Or personally take part in a creation of custom tutorials. Whatever needs to be done, I think Overwatch as a game deserves a better introductory path for new players - as it is immensely fun as long as you can get over the initial barrier of understanding what the fuck is going on :D

This just cements my belief that game either needs an in-depth tutorial or a piece meal one like Rainbox Six Siege. It could also work like For Honor( or most fighting games really) where you have character tutorials too and get in-game currency for it. I recently got someone into fighting games and the easiest way I found was just letting them play someone they find cool. They do a basic tutorial, then they pick the tall doctor with bag on his head and immediately the game let them hit things and had fun. Then later they went and look at the video tutorials that show the character doing cool moves and learned from there on. That almost happened in this video but there was no more easily gained information that Overwatch offered or pushed so people just fizzle out when you end up in spawn slowly walking back over and over.

I stayed because I loved the characters and the art, and because coincidently I started playing in the aniversary and the arcade event REALLY helped, as it's more slow pacing and theres a voice saying whats happening, have less characters, and a clear objective

If the ability to play games and intuit mechanics is analogous to reading levels, Overwatch seems somewhere between Frankenstein and Lord of the Rings.

I let people play test as well. In short, my friend who was very well familiar with shooters was very "afraid"/passive in the beginning because of all the inputs in a game. But once he found a character he enjoyed (hanzo) he had fun playing ow despite the fact he doesn't knew half of the characters. My brother, who had no shooter experience but a lot of moba experience, was rushing everything. Complaining about all the things he didn't understand, which in turn frustrated him to play any further.

Overwatch was my first PC game besides the Sims and tbh....I fell in love on the first sight. I played it for the first time in 2017 and even though I played so badly in the beginning and I didn´t know what was going on, I enjoyed it so much because of the design. I bought it finally myself in 2019 an I think my tip for completely new players would be hopping in the practise range and looking what every character can do to get a basic grasp...you won´t remember a lot but it feels like you have seen the things that come up in the game...then go against the AI....for maybe the first week...it feels more rewarding at first and you know much better what you have to do afterwards.

Yup. I've had friends be in the living room while I watching OWL and them just ask what on earth is going on. People playing OW now are people with multiple years under their belt, and even if they're still not great (cut me and I bleed Silver) they don't realise just how much they learned through osmosis. I have friends who play who STILL struggle with the idea of "if you don't have a barrier then take cover" and wonder why I die about half as often as they do. The amount of stuff OW expends 0 effort to explain is crazy. Using comms from the keyboard, grouping up, "Overtime" and contesting, any character's kit other than Soldier, what almost any of the UI is, tonnes and tonnes of stuff you NEED to know...but no one ever tells you. Then once you're done with that multi-hour learning session you get to learn about how each role should play, why big fights happen at corners, how your character doesn't just play but delivers value. It is absolutely insane how much is expected of a first time overwatch player.

I think this also highlighted the issue that it takes too long to drop or rise to your true MMR/SR, and once there, if you improve or get worse, it takes too long to raise or lower to true level.

I think she brought up a very interesting point about how new players would do this for a few hours, die lots, have a bad time and stop playing. Something I didn't really consider when I started because I had consumed a great deal of overwatch media when it came out, and as a gamer I knew there would be more to the game.than just die spawn repeat. PS: the tutorial could be so much better, as said it doesn't actually even explain that there are health packs.

This is so interesting! Stuff that is totally normal and clear for a gamer is not known to someone, who never plays a game. Like, I can start a game and if it's a shooter, I know that red means enemy, red barrels probably explode when I shoot at them or that a sniper rifle makes more damage but is slower than other weapons. Seeing this video, I think OW does a terrible job in picking up a newcomer to the game. They expect at least some basic knowledge about fps and gaming in general. Anecdotal sidenote: I'm playing games for nearly 20 years now, and it took m half a year to realize, that Roadhog has a second fire mode. My friends broke down in laughter in vc when I was like "Huh? Roadhog's gun has a second fire mod? Did you guys know that?" xD Ah, the bliss of the early days of OW....^^

This was really good! She had a lot of great input I think. Blizz would be smart to listen to experiences like this if they truly want to have anyone be able to pick up the game. I hope with OW 2 having pve that there will be a slightly more 'relaxed' play style for newer/casual folks that is a little more dynamic than kill bots in ai matches.

another tip from me would be to put your melee on an easier button.. i put mine on my back side mouse button because it's a lot easier for my brain to click that than the default is. i do have to say that i understand the overwhelm you can sometimes get as though i am getting better at this for me it's been a really hard one to actually distinguish the enemies footsteps from those of my teammates as to my ears they both tend to sound similarly loud.. or i end up thinking they are louder turning round and seeing it's my teammate. (i have played other fps games over the years though. i used to play TF2 and i also play some Apex from time to time.. for Apex the footstep thing was also an issue where i would often mistake my teammates for enemies but of course i would quickly see they were teammates)

How does this video have less than a thousand likes? I feel bad for you SVB. This is legitimately well done content and you're hardly getting any exposure for your effort :( Let people say what they want about you; your dedication to the experiment is top notch (not spoiling the viewer experience by holding her hand) and the questions you interviewed her with were very insightful.

When I started playing overwatch I didn't have experience in fps but I have played games my whole life, specifically pokemon which I think is very similar in the sense that there can be a lot going on. I feel like I'm a bit different from really new players because I generally find improving fun so new games are just fun to me by default even if I suck.

when i was new to the game, it was a lot more simple than it is now- it was the first pvp fps game i rly played, but even so, it felt almost like when i was learning the game that a lot of the community was also still pretty confused about what they were supposed to be Doing aside from "click heads 5head"- obviously, there were good players even then, but it felt like there was a lot more people who were my skill level as well- obviously a big part of this can be attributed to a lack of new players in general because of less hype, but also i think as the game gets tweaked more towards a competitive, fast-paced experience, it becomes more and more frustrating for new players to try to pick it up, which also contributes to the "no new players" issues also i can't believe this person who has never played this game summarized and explained the Mercy Phenomenon better than many people who've played this game for years LOL

i'm not surprised she kept getting opponents/teammates with vastly more experience and skill. All my QPs these days are filled with very low level accounts, blue and red team both, who play like this. today i had a competitive teammate who spoke briefly on voice chat and sounded like a child under 10. he was playing bastion and just kept on running headlong into the enemy team. my point is, the matchmaking these days is frustrating. it's not fair to players like me, or players like lulu, both of whom are just looking for fair and fun games.
