Thank you for this. Sven is a genuinely decent guy. And with all the disruptions in the decency supply chain these days, it's always good to have some handy. The original Svengoolie - Jerry G. Bishop - was a popular deejay in Cleveland, prior to moving to Chicago. He was the embedded reporter for The Beatles tours in '64 and '65. He was a contemporary of Ernie "Ghoulardi" Anderson. And when the opportunity to become a horror host himself presented itself, he leaned into the Ghoulardi shtick. The Svengoolie name itself was a variation on Ghoulardi, and he also imported one of Ghoulardi's signature gags. Cleveland has a suburb called Parma that Ghoulardi would mock mercilessly. Any reference to the town would trigger an incredulous cry of "PARMA?!?" from Ghoulardi. The gag was very likely lifted from a recurring Martin and Lewis routine, where Jerry's self-introduction as Melvin would inspire the same reaction from Dino. Cleveland host, The Ghoul, picked up the joke and ran with it (along with the rest of Ghoulardi's act) from 1971 through 2003 (with major gaps between shows). Meanwhile, Jerry G. slotted the town of Berwyn into the set-up / punchline - and this in turn was carried over by the Rich Koz (Son of) Svengoolie. It's a regular part of the show today, making the longest running gag in TV history - 1962 - 2024 and counting. It also bears mentioning that Svengoolie is the last of the classic broadcast television horror movie hosts who presented the original Universal SHOCK package just as it was when first launched back in 1957. Svengoolie is living broadcast history. Appreciate it while it's still around!
