Hi my dear. Родили Мать has to be on an epic scale , as was everything else in the USSR. There maybe some similarities between Stalingrad and Verdun , on the NE corner of the French frontier, in that the events there traumatised the respective nations of France 🇫🇷 and Russia 🇷🇺, even to modern times . The French Army of WW1 went down a motor road in an endless convoy to the carnage of Verdun , the road came to be known as Voie Sacre. Similarly the Red Army were conveyed across the Volga to Stalingrad in ferries , which I see a commemoration site there . The loss of life was on an industrial scale and beggars belief. There is no statue comparable around Verdun , but smaller statues of angles with French infantry helmets on . These events are the reality that binds NATO so close together as it was European disunity that allowed such awful events to happen . Churchill visited Moscow at least twice during the war , to visit Comrade Stalin. He described being picked up from the airport and being driven through the streets of Moscow,’that Churchill said were deserted . He would not have known that when a VIP came to town the NKVD would clear out all the appartments along the route , and turn off the electricity. When Churchill tried to roll down the window he realised how thick the glass was and was told the car was amour plated. Comrade Stalin made himself the people’s commissar immediately after the Wehrmacht attack 1941, which was completely surprising to Stalin and was a military disaster in that the most highly experienced soldiers were wiped out. It was going to be a brutal learning curve for the new conscripts. Victory for the USSR was far from certain, Although mercifully for Australia and New Zealand, the Red Army tipped the scales definitively at Stalingrad. The Germans could not recover from such a loss . At the meeting in Tehran with Stalin , Churchill and Roosevelt, Stalin was in touch by telephone at all times , and his compendious mind distilled all the tanks and artillery pieces down to regimental level, and he variously communicated with Stavka or directly with officers at the front. Without the Soviet victory the Japanese would have overrun NZ and Australia, and it would have been my then teenage mother , and her mothers worst nightmare, As our troops were in the North African desert .
