Grand Island Sviyazhsk - author-Lilia Tumanova
Sviyazhsk is a historic village on an island at the confluence of the Sviyaga and Volga Rivers in the Republic of Tartarstan. The original settlement was founded on May 24, 1551 under the auspices of Tsar Ivan the Terrible on the land, at that time inhabited by the Chuvases. A fort was hastily built in for weeks, from detailed plans and parts prepared in Uglich and transported down the River Volga.
During the siege of Kazan in 1552 the Russian army was billeted on the island. In 1719 the island became the centre of the Sviyazhskaya province of the Kazan province , in 1781 - the county seat of the Sviyazhsky uyezd of the Kazan governorship.
The island suffered under the Soviet regime. The historic monasteries and Cathedral of Our Lady were closed and the Monastery of the Assumption became a children's labour commune and later a penal colony with 200 convicts...In 1943, prisoners of war appeared in the colony. Between 1937 and 1948, it is believed 5,000 convicts died in the colony that ceased to be correctional. From 1953 to 1994 in the premises of the Assumption Monastery a psychiatric clinic was established.
Strictly speaking, the island is part of the mainland being connected by a road on top a dam, which also acts as a car park for visitors and tourists.........
