The recording is from April 5, 1973, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Mossovet Drama Theater. Its director, Yuri Alexandrovich Zavadsky, comes on stage. In addition to Richter, other artists also performed there.

Sounds like an infirmary of flu sufferers. Richter his otherworldly and same time very of this world self. I understand this is a special and iconic performance of this work.

I dont see how one can enjoy this. This is rote piano playing. This is what one gets after practicing 14 hours a day as. He did.

Where did you get that information from? From what I’ve read unless under time constraints he would play at most 3 hours a day. I would also recommend listening to other formidable pianists talking about the spontaneity of Richter’s playing and how much he experimented while performing live!
