I'm from New Zealand. The local legend is that these knives were used in conjunction with early revolvers, one in each hand, to counter the native Maori tribesmen who used clubs, staves and hatchets in close combat.

That’s the exact same story I heard. ( I personally like how good the quality is on these knives.)

I wouldn’t mind seeing one of these sporting a coffin style handle. The straight handle needs more retention capabilities

Stratius Rexu ,... don’t let that stop you from getting one. They are pretty great. I put camoform tape (grip tape) on mine. It works just fine.

mine didn't come with what I would consider a true convex edge, I have true clam shell convex edges (say on my Cold Steel Trail Master san maiIII which has a true convex edge) and my Von Tempsky doesn't have that. Still a nice sharp factory edge, just not a true convex edge. I was happy mine came with a 7mm spine, they do ship with a varying spine thickness, with variances between 5mm and 7mm. Overall a brutal, big bruiser user bowie that is very satisfying to own.

Good review. The weakness of the VT is the grip- really primitive. For the money that grip could be more user-friendly... on a knife that size I prefer a "dog-head" pommel so I can rock it in my hand and not worry about the knife leaving my hand on a swing.. The lifetime warranty is nice but I doubt they've ever had to replace one of these.

The grip is a bit slippery. I use camoform tape or Ranger bands. The camoform tape is better but needs to be replaced more often.

So weird i bought a Von tempsky bowie back in like 2001 2002 and mine is maybe if its lucky 3/16 of an inch thick. Its very light in the hand. They must have changed it aftr i bought mine at some point. Great Knife regardless.

I saw another review on KZbin and his Von Tempsky bowie, was very thin also. His review was pretty old. Recently I heard they range between 5mm thick to 7mm thick,... which is quite thick. Mine is 7mm. I think they were changing up the steel a few times also. I actually contacted them directly via Email and they told me: that the "high end" knives are all Hand made & hand sharpened and they use, Swedish L6 Carbon Steel, on just those blades,... they use a different steel on their other less expensive blades. They said: The stock L6 steel they receive is 7mm unless there is a lack of supply then you might end up with a 5mm blade instead. I think it's the: Von Tempsky Bowie, The Von Temsky Ranger, The Ned Kelly Toothpick, & The Hog Beater (Breaker) double edge dagger are all made from Swedish L6 Carbon Steel. AKA: The Good Stuff. --- I don't know what those very old, Thin, models were made of? I'm pretty sure they don't make the thin versions anymore. If You receive a thin one now,... It's probably New "Old Stock" that a seller is trying to get rid of. That being said: I never heard anyone complain about the performance of those older style, Thin, blades. The Svord "High End" Knives are at the Top of my list of Favorite knives.

Oh ya? That’s interesting. It’s a great Carbon alloy tool steel used for saw blades. I wonder how it holds up to L6 Carbon Steel. Where did you hear about this steel change? I know Svord uses different steels for different knives. They have low end peasant knives, then mid range sport knives & finally the high end custom knives ( the Von Tempsky Bowie, & Ranger,… also the Hog Beater & Ned Kelly Toothpick.). The high end customs used to be made of L6 steel.

The price must have dropped considerably since 2018; because I don't think this knife is very expensive, at all. Guys are out here spending over $500 on folders, and a 1.5 lb workhorse, that costs less than half of that, is very expensive?

Bought my 2nd one this week. Eventually I'd like to have 3 of them. I'm not sure how long they will keep making them. It says Limited Edition on the pamphlet that came with the knife so they will probably stop making them at some point. What a great knife. I think they've made many variations of this knife for more than 12+ years. I heard one guy saying that he bought his back in the early 2000's. I'm not entirely sure how long the run has been going for. I'd need to do more research. The thing is, during the run they made it out of different steels I believe and started out with 5 mm spines. Perhaps even smaller spines. The new ones are apparently all 7 mm spines. I don't collect knives but this one is the exception and I'd like to get more before the run ends.

If I may sir, They didn't leave that part unsharpened to put your finger on. This is a fighting knife, that bushcraft marketing trend, tends to make you people believe that any kind of tool, is meant for making feathersticks. That unsharpened part, is there, because the maker is n't targeting perfect fit and finish when he makes these. That's also the most difficult part of the knife to finish properly. They leave it like that either because of the lack of talent, or because of the lack of time, ir just because time and bgrinding belts means higher production cost.
@JoeDoomsday
@JoeDoomsday 2 жыл бұрын
I hear what your saying but I find that hard to believe considering the fit & finish of this knife is outstanding and the Blade grind is a perfect convex. That took a lot of time and effort. Also high Quality steel is used in these high end series of knives. They Cost a small fortune so I highly doubt they are rushed in any way. They come with a lifetime guarantee. Last but Not least: These are designed to be True Bushcraft Knives. Von Tempsky commissioned this exact style knife to be made for himself & his men as a TRUE military/Bushcraft knife. Totally designed to serve both as a weapon and as a Bush survival tool. Those soldiers used this knife to make feather sticks , split wood, & prepare food, out in the Bush,… as well as Combat! I’ve owned & used this knife for years now. It’s my Favorite Knife. The smaller Ranger version is my 2nd favorite knife. These knives are a Survivalists Wet Dream come true. That’s a Fact. (They do need to be cleaned & oiled after use but they are awesome.) My point is this: These modern versions are made to the Old World Specs. The Original knives might have not been sharpened all the way to the guard because it was too difficult back in the day, I get that,… BUT,… It just so happens that it’s very useful for choking up on the blade for carving & feather sticks so whether by accident or design it’s a great feature to have on these knives. It just seems a bit suspicious that a Military/Survival/Bush Knife this great just happened from a commissioned slop job. I think the designer had more knowledge & insight than almost all of these modern knife manufacturers with there crap heat treatments, poor steel choices, thin garbage sheaths, Skeletonized handles & piss poor grinds ,… even though their edge goes all the way up “To A Finger Choil” that’s just a small design twist on a design already used on the Von Tempsky Bowie designed many years ago. - This is one of those old school knives that was designed Not only as a Fighting knife but, also was a true survival/ Bushcraft knife.
