Yesterday, after Romania vs Ukraine game at the Euros finished, I took a look to see what's on shortwave, on frequencies near Romania's 11950 kHz, where there was a live broadcast of the match. To my surprise, I heard the Euro 2024 theme on 11975 kHz!
I immediately checked short-wave.info to see who's using the frequency. It listed Sound of Hope, which meant what I heard was most likely a CNR1 jammer. Checked a legit CNR1 service on 11925 kHz, and voila! - the same song, cut to commercials & TOH pips was heard.
Today, I checked an IQ recording I was fortunate to make during the match to find CNR1 did broadcast Romania vs Ukraine indeed - although only the 2nd half of it, so those who followed the game on the radio missed an incredible goal by Nicolae Stanciu in 29th minute. It was part of their regular sports hour which they have daily just after 14:00 UTC (10pm in Beijing).
Interestingly, while listening to CNR1's coverage, I noted another Chinese commentary of the game running underneath, with Zhongguo Zhi Sheng own commentators talking on top. Were they covering the game in front of TV? Didn't they have access to a clean feed? Is that what the big sponsorship money from a remarkable number of Chinese companies (Alipay, BYD, Hisense etc.) goes for?
So many questions, so little answers. Still a nice touch, from kinda unexpected direction. Especially if you consider that one SW station that is normally big in football, does NOT carry Euro 2024 at all.
