Wow, that was a video. Very informative. I think swag owes you one and definitely any up and coming knife maker. That was a sound decision for you because your not pumping out hundreds of knives and do not need a more expensive band saw. There is so many people out there where this video would benefit them a lot. The thing is how to get it to them if they are not subbed. Thank. Tony.

Tony Patey... Thanks Tony. Yeah, turns out D2 and 154 CM are hard on blades. Slick system this bandsaw and kudos on SWAG coming up with this table. They make it for 4 types/ companies portable bandsaws. And yes, newsmakers and hobbyists may want to know this but most guys starting out in knives though stick to O1, 1084 and 1095 steels. There are more harder ones like what I use but hey cost as much if not more.

Little bit of cutting fluid goes a long way with the portaband saws, good review though!

Seth Mullet... Yep! I use simple wax and it works well. It also keeps the mess down a bit better than oil but you are very correct. A lube goes a long way.

Wouldn't a plasma cutter and an angle grinder be less expensive on consumables?

Hi, I've had my Milwaukee portable band saw, model 6223 for 20+years. I've used it for many things including pipe fitting. I've had good luck with Starrett bi-metal blades. I bought the SWAY stand to use the saw in my home shop. I think my saw cost more back in the 90's than they do today.

Well Sir, thank you for the information. Good job on the presentation. Clean, clear and to the point! I agree on the D2 steel however i plan on using 1095. Any comment on that steel would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work.

The only reason I'm mentioning this is because you talked about blade speed and you also mentioned the Harbor Freight portaband. The H.F. portaband has variable speed anywhere from an absolute crawl to full speed. Weather it's the right saw for you, I can't say, but I just thought I would interject.

Pro1er .... That’s good to know. When I was shopping for one a couple years back I only saw on similar to the Milwaukee that I have now. It was only a two speed. Theta there’s another option for folks is great to hear. I still have this setup but since I bought the JET 14” wood/metal, I use this Milwaukee setup for mild steel, knife pins and aluminum now. Thanks for the info!

@@CKKnifeandTool I've had my Harbor Freight for about three years now and it works well for me, but I really don't use it very often which is the reason I went with that one. If I had a real need for a portaband, I would go with either the Dewalt or the Milwaukee, but having said that, there are many people who use the H.F. on the jobsite and have been satisfied with it. I bought a Jet 14" closed-stand bandsaw many years ago. Had I known how much I would be using it, I would have went with a better saw.

Question...just curious. It's like buying another car that gets better gas mileage and leaving your truck in the driveway, which you could never save the amount of money in gas that is paid for the other car. What is the cost difference once you factor in the good blades? Great video and it has us thinking. But what if we went with a portaband with the good blades? Would it take 100 knives or 1000 of them to make up the difference in the expense of blades? That would be cool to know for us that it's a hobby or semi-pro. Thx,

Hi George! So, what your wondering is comparing a Milwaukee vs. A harbor Freight or Port Cable bandsaw? I'd say you can go with either. In all actuality, going with a cheaper bandsaw may save you money but I didn't want a problem or break-down in the middle of working interfere. I am no longer the hobbyist and there is logical thinking behind "Buy once... cry once." As for blades? Go with the best possible blades made to cut the steel you need to cut for that saw. This is where I'd say not to scrimp. Check with LA Cutting Products, I do believe they have a new line from Lenox or another maker (high end) that will have blades for these little saws that can cut knife steel better. Because I switched to the JET (found in my newer videos for 2018) I haven't looked at the portable ones.
