In this video Dave & Mick give you their thoughts on the swags they have used, to help you with some things to look for, on the purchase of your next swag!
Unfortunately we have actually quoted the incorrect price for the arb swag. The one we used is $479. The swag price we quoted was the arb double swag which is $679. The bags that go with them are $139 and $149 respectively. we apologise for the incorrect information.
We compare the

Excellent job guy's well done and thanks for the review's , i myself have had several swags over the years i love them . My personal favourite for adverse conditions and a shitload of rain would have to be the dune 4x4 king single , i have been in that swag in some wicked storms and even the edge of a tropical cyclone and still didn't leak one drop of water . Cheers guys i appreciate the content . ✌️👍👌

Cheers for watching mate. They all are good swags for a certain reason or another and that's what we hoped to help point out. Our burke and Wills have been through hell and never let us down either. We have the crash pad swags now also so keen to see if they stand up to all the good feedback you hear. Thanks heaps for taking the time to comment, good to hear about the dune too. Hope it brings you many more years of a good dry nights sleep

Have slept in the Jolly swag in pelting rain, on a stretcher, and I was just fine. Back in the early nineties all swags we’re like that. The Bush Tucker man made them popular. His swag was just a big sheet of canvass folded into thirds with a couple of woollen army blankets and a pillow.

I used the burke and wills swag for a year and hated that it wasn't freestanding. In hard ground it was really hard to setup because the pegs wouldn't go into the ground, the flynet got small holes in it because i rolled it up with the poles inside. but the nice part was watching the stars on a dry night. I'm wanting to get a crashpad single swag or just the classic one for super simple camping.
@4x4brothers

Not being free-standing is definitely a con of the swag. Would only take spreader bars to solve that. We both have the crashpad double swag now too and that's a great swag. Upgraded the king to that.

Got a single Bourke and Wills Biker swag and a single swag like your Jolly Swagman. Both do the job well. Just added a Oztent Geko king single stretcher to make both more comfortable. Thanks for a great review. I agree that the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe swag is a tight fit and is hard to get it in its bag. I certainly found this to be the case when I first bought mine, but it gets better when you master your packing skills after a week on the tracks. If this is still is a concern for you, Kings now make an oversized swag bag for $59. The ARB Skydome Touring review says that the 2 doors offer a versatile opening. They don’t look as wide as the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe, which has much wider full-length door on both sides, making it easier to get in and out. The 23Zero Bandit review says that entering is quite easy with its four doors (two on each side). I would think that the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe would be easier to enter (and get out). Even though the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe has just one door on each side, it’s a larger full-length door rather than 2 smaller doors, so getting in and out of the swag is easier than having 2 doors on each side with a canvas partition and pole in the middle. I agree that the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe sags a little, but it’s not as bad as swags with no spreader bar at the top. Those swags with a middle hooped pole would be better to overcome this sagging issue, but the downside is that they are harder to get in and out with a centre hooped pole. The review says the Burke & Wills swag is the only one that comes with sandfly mesh. The Kings Big Daddy deluxe swag also has this feature.
@4x4brothers
@4x4brothers 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the time to watch and the in depth reply. The kings is definitely a great entry swag no doubt about that but there is some definite quality differences as you step up the range. Everyone is for sure going to see different positives and negatives too thats why we tried to keep this as positive as possible because they are all great in some way and to someone so hopefully people can take away what they need to when looking at swags.

I have the jet bunker that looks to be a newer model you have as mine doesnt the pockets for ropes. Otherwise fantastic i do roll with a self inflating mattress in it but have camp in high country snow no dramas. woken up with a massive puddle on it and dry as on inside besides condensation. @4x4brothers
@4x4brothers 2 жыл бұрын
Do you want a double or single swag. Single will be warmer as less air to warm on the inside and more compact pagked up if that's a consideration but obviously less roomier The mattress are probably on par but construction much better in the burke. If its an occasional use swag though the kings will be fine. Hope this helps a bit

Surveying in the NT for several years, it was always a laugh to see a fourby with 4 swags loaded up on the roof without any protection. Those sways then collect half of the NTs dust, and bugs, locaust, diesel soot from the fourby infront, ie, everything. If that wasnt bad enough, then it rained, and the same collection of schmutz turns into an unholy gunk. Driving 90k km pa on mostly bush tracks, I had my swag in a very heavy duty custom canvas tube bag, and if there was likely to be rain, that day, I slid the sag into a poly bin liner bag first, then into the swag bag. And I always used a small tap on the ground first. After 26yrs, said swag canvas still looks brand new, even after many 100s of nights of use. If you care about your swag, look after it.

The old Jolly swagman format is what my father and grandfather used all over WA, NT, QLD outback hunting crocs and buffalo. If you set them up right you will not get wet. But yeah not the most comfy thing ever. But better than the stories of some of the old fellas that used to just dig a hip hole in the sand in the desert and sleep with no swag.

Good overview, Sauls of Tawonga are Aussie made would be good to see a review, all but the traditional style are just canvas tents. Get a tent with a PU coated nylon floor that’s quick to pitch would be better than these over complicated ‘swags’, the concept of the swag was light and transportable, these could go about 15m from the Ute before people would give up. Traditional swags are the go.

I have used a Saul swag for the last 14 years and I still love it. I have the mozzie net and a hiking tarp rolled up in it. On a hot night I use the net and sleep on top of it. On crap ground I set it up on a stretcher or on my ute tray. They are so simple to use, there is nothing to break and roll up smaller than most dome swags even with my sheets and blankets inside. A great product and one of the few still made in Australia

Could someone please explain the attraction of modern swags? They weigh too much packed, they take up as much if not more space than a 4-person tent in the car, they’re bastards to roll up, just as involved to set up as a tent, I could go on. Oh and you can’t stand up in a swag like you can in a tent.
@4x4brothers
@4x4brothers 3 жыл бұрын
It's a valid point mate but unlike a tent the mattress and bedding can be all rolled up in it and put on a roof ( yes is bulky but so is a self inflating mattress if you choose that for a comfortable nights sleep. The set up times are pretty fast as you seen in the video. Not many if any tents you could set up that fast with mattress etc. Downside is yep you can't stand up but there is quite alot of room inside these for getting changed etc. We still don't think there is one perfect setup would all come down to personal choice.

I used the Jolly Swagman from Perth to Darwin, through Pilbara and Kimberley. No rain was a plus. I combined it with a Cot1 stretcher to keep me off the ground. A down sleeping bag inside kept me snug on cold nights. I LOVED the ease of set up. I loved the simplicity. As a 70 year old female I found this ideal. I couldn’t be bothered with the bulkier more complicated swags. I have since upgraded to an Oztrail basic with insect netting at the head. Again instant set up. Lightweight, inexpensive, bug proof. On hot nights I use the net dome only of the Oztrail Tasman tent and my stretcher. Lightweight, easy set up bugproof. I don’t get the complicated camping style but each to his own. Having looked at these swags I would prefer a popup tent with Cot1 stretcher and sleeping bag. More options, more room. Great summary

I think that's the beauty of so many different products and styles that there is a range to suit everyone for every situation. The pull over swags are perfect for super fast set up. Swags are not useable in Europe or in any wet environment. Do not see the value. They are bulky and expensive compared to a normal shelter with more room, much lighter and cost a fraction of a swag.

They are perfect in any wet environment mate we have used them in all conditions. Fast set-up and plenty of room in the dome style. All bedding is already in and made as you can roll them up with it in there

You young blokes have no idea , I am 63 yo and have swag camped more times than you have had Sunday dinners . Why would you not include the best aussie swag THE CRASHPAD

That’s grouse your getting out and about a heap mate. We didn’t include it in this as didn’t have enough nights in one to give a informed and honest opinion. Have done a second comparison and included it in that one and yep it’s a great swag

Keep swagging mate. Some of us were surveyors all over central Oz, and all of the NT for several years, and pretty much only used a swag every night... but what would we know. The Crashpad has a major deficientcy - the bottom PVC floor is flat, ie it doesnt make a bucket to keep the waterout. PVC isnt absolutely essential - from my experience, a canvas floor can also keep the waterout camped overnight on a dry salt lake, then it rained. Even though there was 1cm of water, the canvas floor did a reasonable (but not perfect) job of keeping the water out. Where the PVC floor joins the canvas is the water ingress vulnerability point - at the joint. Sitting in 1cm of water on a flat lake bed, it is more than likely the Crashpad will leak at that joint. Joints will withstand water running over and off, but generally not full immersion. This is a design fault in the Crashpad. All the other brands have a pvc bucket floot, that generally extends 100mm up the sides, before the join thith the canvas.
