Is CGC Grading Harder? Unboxing Silver & Bronze Key Comic Books

In this video I share with you all the rest of my CGC submission. While the grades I got were decent I was hoping for a bit higher in some instances - it makes me wonder if CGC is grading harder than they were last year when I got much higher grades for similar types of books. I also talk about one comic book that I think they flat out got wrong - this will definitely be a resubmission on my part.

FF 112 looks really good. I'd resubmit, too, with a note, "Make it make sense."

Always look forward to your videos, Mickey. When you raked the light over the Fantastic Four 112 I think I could see the creases... a horizontal one at mid-cover that goes from Thing's right armpit to the right edge of the page. Also, one bend that curves just above that horizontal crease. Still surprises me it would keep the grade THAT low unless that horizontal crease is deep. Still, such awsome books!

I have a stack of PC books I’ve been wanting to submit to CGC, but from what I’ve been seeing going on I think I’ll be waiting a while to send any of them in.

CGC uses the same system that the government used to figure out what to do at the end of the Margaritaville episode of South Park to determine grades.

​@@adamlata3869consensus and consistency are the two biggest words that are the hardest to follow up on in any grading room. The truth of the matter is, most people can't actually agree on a grade. Now incorporate the idea that somebody is telling you, your opinion is so good they're willing to pay you for it.

I don't know if they are grading harder.. ..maybe a bit.. but I do know their consistency is all out of wack. I'm starting to think they are taking your stack of books you send in and only compare them to each other and not by their CGC handbook. The best book in your stack gets a 9.8 and the rest 9.4s hahahahah

If that GSX 1 could receive a 9.8 that Ff 112 deserves a 9.8 as well. That book is flawless.

I understand Swag. Last year I submitted a copy of Fantastic Four 259 for my personal collection. The book has no visible flaws. It is an easy NM/MT 9.8 condition book. CGC gave it a grade of 9.0.

Great bunch o' slabs, Swagg! That FF 112 looked really good, crazy!! I feel like "light bends" is just a catch-all 😀.Jealous of your Strange Tales 169! I thought mine was around 9.2, but came back 8.5. Haven't commented in a while, but still catching most of your stuff!

Sanity #1 arrived and I very much enjoyed it. It's very well written and the art is also top notch. You should be proud of what you've accomplished in this space because it's excellent so far and interests me in what happens next. The big 2 can't even do that nowadays besides 1 or 2 titles at best. Very cool books. That Dr Doom is one I've always wanted

I think you're on point about 7.0 being a nice grade for Silver Age books, versus 8.0 with Bronze Age books. You have to look at it in terms of the advent of modern collecting; the early 70's is when some collectors started taking measures to protect their comics and, of course, the bag and board appeared not too long after.

Such beautiful books! I'd love to be able to upgrade my FF 112 CGC 8.0 to a 9.0. It's one of only two books in my FF 105-202 CGC run that are below 9.0. So tough to find that black cover in higher grade without paying through the nose.

I try and stick to aiming for the minimum grade I go for align with the first digit of the decade it is most acknowledged from. Golden: 4-5.0 Silver: 6-7.0 bronze: 7-8.0 copper/modern: 9.0

FF 25 is my favorite Thing/Hulk cover. I have an 8.0 Ow/white but now I want a white pager lol. 112 is definitely on my want list. My FF 94 is also a 9.0 that imho looks better than the grade but I'm happy with it.

I actually had an FF 112 PGX 8.5. I cracked it out and sent it in to CGC and it came back a 9.2 with white pages. I was amazed, but very happy. Fantastic Four 112 is one of my top ten favorite covers, and IMO the quintessential Hulk / Thing fight.

Maybe pgx grades harder or cgc trying buy you off giving high grades to books I saw 9.8 grade video by cgc employee 9.8 have big dent on front it got 9.8 other people watch video clearly see dent on cover

RE: 7.0 on SA books - as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm just content with a good presenting copy that I can afford. 😊 Nice books!

The comment of if the grader was having a bad day makes my eyes roll. It is what it is........Sub -Mariner # 8 is like the FF 112.....Really nice books. Be happy!

I agree - I don’t think graders are having a bad day every day when grading books. If they are having a bad day they can grab a beer and unwind later. I don’t think it translates to giving bad grades lol.

Wow, that 9.0 FF looks like a 9.8 to me, I’ve seen way worse corners on 9.8’s. They really screwed you on that one. Nice video

Having worked in a grading room before, I can say that the biggest issues that present to anybody in that space is consensus and consistency. I don't know how to solve those two things. I'm not sure anybody does without the use of some sort of visual grading assistant.

Honestly, I am not sure that precision is what we need. No two comics are the same, and no two defects are the same. No two collectors are even going to address a book the same way. There are standards, and then there are people grading according to standards.

I just received an 8 book modern fast track submission back and 5 of the books have severely warped inner wells! I have video of the unboxing posted on my channel! CGC has been aware of this issue and is still using the warped inner wells! My books look terrible in the slabs!

CGC/slabbed comic books are not listed in the comic book price guide and are therefore the same price as non-cgc graded comic books.

I literally own Bronze age 9.8s that do not look as good as that FF #112. I'd wait 6 months until -- hopefully -- grading gets back to being more consistent. I also think CGC is focusing on bindery tears more than before (based on that 9.9 video they did).

I can see grading new modern books a little harsher, But some of the older book grading is ridiculous.

Is the grade based entirely on the covers though? That's what people seem to think. Perhaps there were minor flaws inside which knocked the book down to 9.0?Just a thought.

That FF 112 seems like a clerical misgrade. Perhaps the cover needs another press, but I'd be shocked if that is below a 9.4, and it looks more like a 9.6 or 9.8.

Your Fantastic Four #112 looks so clean, it looks like a reprint. It's immaculate other than the lower left corner. The upper left corner is a negligible bindery tear. It does not deserve a 9.0. Looks like a 9.4 at least. If not better. Maybe someone at CGC is watching your videos and screwing you over. But I appreciate you speaking the truth. CGC wants people to crack and resend. They make more money.

A dealer sent in a NM/M Uncanny X-Men 256, came back 9.2. Contacted CGC, their response was, well 3 people looked at it. But if you buy a membership and resubmit, I will credit you $40. I agree no consistency, as two other Uncanny X-Men from the same era were 9.6. All 3 books look the same. I've lost faith in CGC.

I see a lot of people speculate on comic grades based solely on the cover and the back page. Doesn't CGC and other third party graders grade every single page? To many people just look at the front cover speculate what grade it should be.

When you’re dealing with Blackstone Grading formerly known as CGC they aren’t interested in giving extra attention to obvious near mint comics like your FF 112.

I am seeing a lot of videos where pressed books are being mishandled by CGC and are coming back with grade-affecting finger dents. These books leave the shop perfect and they are doing this damage at CGC. I am starting to wonder if people should be documenting the condition of their books before they send them in. The risk to damaging them is starting look like like (willful) neglagence on their part.

I suspect that CGC has tightened its belts across-the-board due to the scandals of the previous months. As such, they are grading much harder than they were at the beginning of the year. If you want to crack and resubmit, I would wait until things cool down at CGC.

They’re not grading harder - simply more inconsistent than ever. Grading is not subjective - it’s either accurate or inaccurate.

Im not really submitting rn but i made an exception for a Jim Steranko signing at my LCS. I cracked out a Xmen 50 7.0 and it came back 6.0 🍆🥊

CGC is nothing but a roll of the dice. You got POO POOHd on for sure with the hulk/thhing cover. See how many people hunt for books undergraded just to crack press resub should say it all.

If grading isn’t consistent then what’s the point of grading at all? If an umpire made a bad call every 20 pitches, we’d call him a blind fool. If CGC does it we call them the industry leader.

CGC has no standards or consistency. Look at the video they posted recently which you can see the graders work areas. These aren’t being graded by professionals. People should be pissed.

If grading was supposed to be fair and make sense there would only be 9.0, 9.5, and 10.0 grades (and 11.0 for my Spinal Tap comic book only of course). Subjective and scammy are fundamental to the market. Why are our wonderful perfect comic grading overlords somehow not sufficient for you? Also to be fair to CGC, what have you done for them lately as a graded funny book pusher. No one likes a negative Nancy when there are subjective sweet heart grades to give. Comic grading companies are people too and like to hear embellished accolades from their influencers. Be better Swag. It is nice of you to pay them to grade your book multiple times though.

They would never start grading harder. They are not interested in truth. But grading higher gets them more money. I always knew they would eventually do this
