In all the Vedic scripture, the position accorded to the Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran or the Bhagwat Katha is exceptional. The Vedas are, of course, the highest authority. However, Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is like the essence of the Vedic teachings, written by Ved Vyas himself. Knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads is presented in such a blissful manner, with all the Divine pastimes of God and His devotees, that listening to the Bhagwat Katha becomes an experience in itself. Not only does it illuminates our intellect with Divine wisdom, it also moves our heart and fills them with the nectar of Divine love. That is why it is said that this Srimad Bhagavatam or Bhagwat Katha has something that even the Vedas do not have.
Parikshit, as the young king, started ruling in a righteous manner. There was justice and peace in his kingdom. One day, when Parikshit was out touring his kingdom, he saw a white cow, and by the side of it was a bull standing on one leg. The cow was shedding tears. They both were engaged in a conversation. The cow was actually the mother earth personified and the bull was dharma. Parikshit heard their discussion. The bull was asking the cow, "Why are you shedding tears? Are you seeing my sufferings and crying ?" The bull was consoling the cow by telling her that happiness and misery are both relative terms in the world. The cow replied, "No, it is not that. There are so many sins being committed on me, the earth, that I am disturbed. People are moving away from the path of Dharma."
Parikshit was deeply touched by the conversation. Meanwhile, a very ugly man came with a staff and started breaking the one remaining leg of the bull. Parikshit was furious and started chasing him. Finally, the ugly man surrendered. The man revealed his identity as Kaliyuga. Parikshit said, "What are you doing in my kingdom? Kaliyuga doesn't have any place in my kingdom." Kaliyuga replied, “By the will of God the ages come and go and even I have to come. You have to give me some place in your kingdom. Parikshit realized that he will have to give him shelter, and so he gave Kaliyuga four places to stay.

I had never heard of the reason that king Parikshit was cursed. It is very enlightening to hear from Swamiji. I find it amazing that king Parikshit was so elevated that he renounced the entire earthly kingdom like a blade of grass and left to meditate at the Ganges.

A lesson to be learnt is to treat sages, gurus, and wise men with love, respect, dignity, and service. If they are ill-treated, they may get angry and curse. Even if they do not curse, the bad karma of ill-treating a good and holy person gives really bad results. Another lesson to learn is that we should live our lives as if we had only one more week to live - do only what is important and do not waste time in useless pursuits!

Swamiji, i love to listen Bhagavatam fr u. He explained how Kaliyug entered the world. Arjun answered Yudhister question "That Sree Krishna, by whose power we were glorious n powerful. who was soul n bases of our life closed his pasttime(leela) in this earth.

In this Swami Mukundananda youtube video discourse he nicely explained how Lord Krishna concluded his pat times and went to His Divine abode. And also he mentioned, how the great king Parikshit effected by the age of Kali and cursed by great sage Shrungi to die in 7 days. The best part is the King Parikshit did not fear upon hearing that he will be dying in 7 days. It is very good to know how the King renounced his kingdom and walked out for the welfare of his own soul.

Swami Mukundananda Ji explains everything in an easy to understand manner. I had read the stories about Parikshit, previously; but, was never able to grasp the essence or the message in the stories. Swami Mukundananda Ji delivers the essence very well and it sinks into my head. For example, I never fully understood the significance of the one-legged bull, before I heard this lecture video.
