Swamp coolers are great if you live in a areas where the climate is dry but very hot ,but there is one flaw when the sun is at high noon till around 4 pm they don't work very well unless you do what I show in this video . I hope you try this out because it works great

ha, I was thinking of doing just this - with the foam board. But I didn't think to glue it. I'm also planning to put some reflective foam board near the bottom to reduce the temperature on the roof.

Ya wanna know a "SIMPLE THING" Close off the gaps in your side panels. The Hot outside air is bypassing the cooling pads and being sucked directly into the interior of the cooler. A "SIMPLE THING" method would be to use foil tape to close off the gaps.

I’m going to skip the plywood and just add some insulation. Good project though.

I'm not attaching stuff to my swampy, It could get wet and rust it out. Perhaps a shade.

Also, add a second pump and spider, it can be tricky to fit the second spider, but worth it. I've done this on a couple coolers now, I use a 3 way 3 prong plug where the 110v pump plugs in so I can plug in 2 (2 way splitter would be nice, but I've yet to see one at a local hardware store). The end result is the air goes from pretty good to ice cold

Your so right.... having that duct work heat up is working against you ... getting rid of it is like PHD smart in my book ...

Another tipto have a cold blower is to protect the water tank from the direct sun light as water will be hot on reaching the cooler What I did , I put water heater of 50 liter beside the cooler and I diconnect the electricity from it to work as a cool water tank before going to air cooler The water temp in this way on reaching the cooler will be around 80s

I have a question Bob. Do I have to use liquid nails to glue the foam pads on to my swamp cooler or can I use any sort of household glue like krazy glue, elmers glue, etc?
@BobMongiello
@BobMongiello 8 жыл бұрын
Liquid nails is vest because it is thick , I don't think something so liquid like you mentioned will work.

Been looking for ideas like this I'm in Texas and my swamp cooler is on my roof and get direct sun light from 8am all the way until 7pm and it gets really stuffy inside. I was thinking of building a little hut.around it

well you want the sun to hit the sides because the water will evaporate and cool it down it is just the top you don't want to get hot .

well my house burned down so it got hotter ! Just kidding of course it works why wouldn't it so just one day in the summer put your hand of the top of your swamp cooler and see how freaking hot it is and then open it up and see how hot the air is and you will see that you swamp cooler isn't working as good as it could be common sense

why use the plywood? why not just glue the insulation directly to the top? One less step without having to use the screws and a hand drill is a lot more simple for me. Would that work too, without the plywood? Thanks!

yes that works too :)

What would you do if the cooler is in the window and you need to reflect the sun from it?
@BobMongiello
@BobMongiello 2 жыл бұрын
If the top of the cooler is getting really hot you need to make sure it doesn't that is all . the sun hitting the side is ok because it evaporates the water and cools the area . hope that helps

a swamp cooler does need the sun to evaporate the water flowing down this makes the air cooler I just want the very top not to get hot because that just works against the process .

I am not sure what was done but if you reduce the heat areas on any vent pipes that cold air is going through it has to help it is just common sense . I would like to know what exactly was done

well probably but when you touch a vent or area and it burns your hand it just makes sense to cool it down some how .

This is totally unneeded. The temp of the cabinet has nothing to do with cooling. Nor does water temp. What matters is low humidity and evaporation, That's where the cooling occurs. Period! Covering the duct work would do waaaaaay more than what he's doing!
@michaelcombrink8165
@michaelcombrink8165 4 жыл бұрын
yes it swamp coolers work off of evaporation, which requires humidity below 100%, eg unsaturated air, if the sun heats the water and fills the box with humid air then you are pumping your house full of hot humid air, the cooling effect comes from the water being pushed to absorb heat, when water is ripped off the pads through evaporation it absorbs heat, the water in the air makes the air humid, when that humid air reaches less humid air in your house that water can absorb more heat, also water remaining on the pads looses heat to the water evaporating into the air, so the water in the pads cools down, because the water in the pads is constantly circulating all the water is actively cooling but all of this basically works by creating circumstances where the heat and pressure gradients favor heat entering the water you need the water whether in the form of liquid, vapor, humidity, gaseous, you need the water to be colder than your house and skin, and less humid than your house, whenever your house is colder and more humd than the swamp produces, then it starts heating your house not cooling it, so every step that drops the temperature along the way helps though i do think as long as he's putting plywood on top he should have made it extend far past the edges to give shade to the sides and make a border of the roof that would be a little cooler
@BobMongiello
@BobMongiello 3 жыл бұрын
Yes i understand I am only talking about the top the rest must be in the sun ... the roof of these swamp coolers are metal and the sun heats them up causing the inside to heat up working against the cool air being created by the evaporation process it is just common sense that is all .
