Today I melted down a large swamp cooler motor. It was an old rust bucket that my buddy gave me. It was a pain to get the copper out due to how dilapidated it was, but I eventually got there. I hope you enjoy a nice simple motor meltdown.

Nice Melt!! I always test my "Aluminum" with a copper sulfate solution (which is made from drain opener crystals and is blue in color) I clean an area on the metal with an angel grinder to expose clean metal. If the metal is zinc, it will turn black. If it is aluminum, it will stay shiny.

It was so satisfying to see the molds start to glow one after the other when you poured the copper. I gotta get my hands on some more...

Awesome video. Breaking things down to melt can be fun. Then the fun of melting it comes. Always nice to see what is poured afterwards. Great job brother.

So, the metal blocks look great. I mean it's copper, which always looks good, but you really need longer gloves. Every time you put more metal into that furnace that was going full blast, I was getting the creeps. You NEED longer gloves. I just want you to be safer. 😁 Anyway, it's still a great video!

look like that blister is healed up nicely.. the heat shield seemed to work good in this pour so now no worries about that issue again. the blocks are always cool even just brushed.. is nice to see the lines from the pour and the cooling in them.. i was going to offer up an idea for more of a challenge .. we already talked about a band logo cast.. but have you thought about trying to make a 2 piece gothic type door knocker??? could keep the mounted end with a hook instead of an enclosed circle so you could just set or rest the actual knocker part in it to swing freely. just thought id throw another idea your way.. also ever thought of doing like a three metal pour in layers? something like a pyramid design or obelisk but instead of layered horizontally do it vertically.. just lay the mold down sideways and pour it.. think that would be awesome to see with the pour lines running up an item instead of across. well glad to see ya doing good and stay safe my friend.. ill catch ya on the next video!!! and keep that music coming !!!! metal for the metal \m/

So very therapeutic to watch. Something about it is just zen. Have no idea why, but who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth? lol Definitely gotta just get a foundry set up. Have the crucible and tongs, built a burner, but keep changing ideas and design of foundry itself. Think it's time to just bite the bullet and buy one. I normally do diy when I can as I enjoy knowing how everything was made and why, but at a certain point (think I'm way past it, lol) you spend more time/money/energy than it would've been to just buy a nice ready to go one, lol

I’m glad this is your hobby. Way too much work for $40 of AL and CU. I guess you know your cube molds hold around 1.25lb of copper. I really like the cubes. Any idea how big/heavy of a copper cube you could safely melt and cast in a sand mold? I would love to see a large, not dangerous, cube cast in a future video.
@TheGrowingStack
@TheGrowingStack Жыл бұрын
I could probably do a big 15-20lb cube. Maybe I’ll give that a try this weekend for next weeks video. 👍 Thanks Jim!

You seem to have missed some aluminum. Those fin things on the center rotor of the motor are aluminum. They come right off with a chisel.
