Here’s an early March dominance dispute to establish the pecking order between Wisconsin trumpeter swans 24K and 7P. The winner is 7P! Watch the victory dance by the winning pair (and the sandhill crane video bomb)!
Fun Fact! Both collared swans are important in Wisconsin’s trumpeter swan story. Read why (below).
PLACE: Crex Meadows, Burnett County (NW) Wisconsin. Crex Meadows is one of the original release sites for Wisconsin’s trumpeter swan restoration program. It has fantastic habitat for many wildlife species, including trumpeter swans and sandhill cranes.
What’s important about these ‘marked’ swans?
24K received its collar in 2005 as a cygnet. In 2024, this swan will turn 18 years old! It has had the collar all of that time. Did you know neck collars have unique codes for each swan and sightings of a marked swan tells its swan story over the years? Trumpeter Watch reports show swan 24K has spent the winter and autumn in Lisle, Illinois; Blanford, Indiana; and Martinsville, Illinois. Then it is back to Crex Meadows for nesting each summer.
7P is a male swan with a GPS tracking collar. He received his collar in July 2021 at Crex Meadows. He was part of the three-year Midwest swan tracking study.
