The Swanee is a historic pond and nature reserve in an area of Kendray, just over a mile from Barnsley town centre. This recording showcases poetry, history, songs, art and photography all reflecting the stories of the people who remember the Swanee. This project hopes to celebrate the heritage of this wonderful, yet sometimes maligned place and to prove that history doesn’t just happen in castles and palaces but in the sometimes-forgotten places just on our doorsteps. Here in Kendray. Here in Barnsley.
So, please pull up a seat, get a brew and listen to some surprising stories and songs you might not have heard before!
Up the Swanee! is a Barnsley Heritage Connects Project run by Barnsley Museums and with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
