This was one of the best reviews of this Swann system. I've just installed mine, and wow what a breeze it was. Question though, I would like to record to a 3TB external hard drive, and since I've stopped by to see yours, and you noted that it is possible, I thought I'd ask, do I just need to plug the drive into the HDD usb slot, format it and off we go, or is there a setting amongst it all in there that I need to change, my apologies it literally been running for a few hours. Thanks again for the post :)

Hey there! www.swann.com/uk/sodvr-44580tv# So i had a look at this website and found this in the Q+A Section of the manual (Second to last page of the book). hopefully this is the same model as your, if not you can try and search your DVR model number so you can get accurate details for your unit. My suspiscion is that it will be the same for all of this series "What is the largest hard drive that I can install inside my DVR? The largest hard drive you can install is 6TB (terabyte). We recommend that you purchase a drive that is surveillance rated such as the Western Digital Purple™ and Seagate Skyhawk™ range of drives. Can I connect and record to a portable USB hard drive? No, your DVR will only record to the internal hard drive that is installed." Hope this helps you!

Thank you so much for the info, you have found the exact answer I was hoping to clarify. Installed it myself without any issues. The wifi signal is great even kzbin.infoUgkxE_D_sddGAdiVUKp7PkkmyxO7bRtgqmk5 when the router is located far away. I really enjoy the night vision feature that allows me to see clearly any activity near our house (mostly cars and wild animals). The motion detection is helpful to me as well to monitor what happens on our front.

Thanks mate, I did like your idea of a junction Box too. I was thinking too I don't think I will have a CAT5 cable or my modem close enough to plug into the unit but would you think if I got a wireless adaptor to plug into either the USB or Ethernet slot it would work?
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean an adaptor to connect the DVR? so that the DVR and the modem connect wirelessly? If so, then I suspect the only thing you might find is that the connection may not be very strong and you may not get high quality playback on your smart devices and/or devices on the same network. I think it is personal opinion, but I usually find that wired connections are always my way to go when you have connections that need low latency and high speeds. Also, i could be wrong, but i think you need to double check about using that rear usb port for network connections, my understanding is that it's for the mouse which is provided in the package. i suggest that you do a little more research into how the system would integrate with your network (both the performance and hardware sides), because a little research won't hurt your pocket, but a hasty purchase will! hopefully this helps you out! Cheers

LAX thanks mate yer I did a bit more research and I can just use a Wi-Fi booster with an Ethernet port which not only boosts the signal and connects to my home network which allows wired devices to be wireless and just uses a normal power point. Cost like 40 dollars so simple fix, just need to fork out to get more BNC cablea

Hey there, If you are using the cat 5 With the BNC convertors you will be OK up to 100m based on what i have read, anything more and you will need to put a active component in between, i guess to amplify the signal, this can be a modem. If you can't get an active source in between you might have to run fiber optic cable which is pretty pricey. Hope this helps you! Cheers

LAX Hi LAX. You should be sponsored by Swann.! I liked your review enough to buy an 8 channel, 6 camera Swann system (almost) identical to yours. I’ve followed the “read first” and “read second” guides and completed them successfully. I had the cameras set up in my lounge room as a test and was able to view the cameras on the monitor, see them operating with motion detection and see what the cameras were recording. I did this before placing them around the house. I also used you junction box tip. Thank you. Then I went to install the cameras around the house and turned the DVR off at the power point. I forgot about the shut down procedure. Now the DVR doesn’t operate properly and I cannot view the cameras. If you can help with any advice I would be extremely grateful. I cannot find my instruction manual. Thank you.

@Lakish_Narayan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi tesphfa, Wow! you are lucky because I just got in front of my PC to check email xD From what you have said, I don't think it's a cable issue; maybe a good start would be to connect the camera that is working to one of the non-working ports; if you find the signal disappears, then it might be some settings on the DVR or a hardware issue. you can also try connecting one of the non-working cameras to the working port to see if the cameras become active. Once you get some more info on the problem, I can probably be more specific with some troubleshooting ideas, but i suspect this action will tell you a lot about the nature of the problem! Hope this helps!

M Bravo Hi there! Great question and do please correct me if I am wrong, but yes they should but you will need a way to convert back to the original cable that is the BNC cable style. So I guess you would need a converter on both ends. I don’t think there would be any difference in quality as long as the converters do not bottleneck the feed. I hope this helps you!

V.helpful video, thanks. What do you think of the image quality? I have a 720p system, and this has slightly disappointing images. For instance you can’t read number plates on any cars in the picture, and moving vehicles are blurry. Your camera looks good in the shots to the side of your property, but that appears fairly close up. If cameras are mounted high up and looking down at a driveway, what would it be like?
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! The image quality is great for what i need it to do. To my knowledge, the system should have a live viewing and a recording quality of 1920 x1080 at 15 fps. So, when vehicles drive by the image has some blur and this will be determined by how fast the vehicle is going. I am based in New Zealand so people drive about 50km/h (31mph) on my road at this speed when people drive by i would not be able to make out the plate number (the distance from the camera to the curb is about 10m), i can make-out what the driver is wearing (when his window is down) but the face appears only as colored pixelated squares, i can make out the model of the car and potentially even how old the vehicle is (so its quite clear) . The angle of my camera to the curb is almost perpendicular so i can't see the plate numbers. However, if someone was to enter through the gate in my driveway (distance from driveway camera to gate is about 10m), i would be able to read there plate. (this camera is mounted high up and looking down at a driveway). Thinking about the length of your driveway, if it is quite a bit longer then 10m, i suspect that the quality of the image wouldn't be enough to read the plate when the car is far off, but potentially enough to see the driver. So, if i was to suggest anything, it would be this, (when i say dynamic i just mean a moving image like a car driving by and when i say static i mean a image where a car is parked.) High quality Live and/or high quality recording of dynamics Images: you'll need high fps and high resolution High quality Live and/or high quality recording of static Images: you'll need high resolution but you will get away with slower fps. Although upgrading from 720p to 1080p(15fps) will give you improved image quality, i would be very weary of saying that it will meet all your expectations. Hope this helps and if you want you can forward me your email by pm and i can send you an image example of one the cameras i have installed in the front of the house that would give you a really clear idea of what i am talking about. Have a great week ahead!

Nice overview video. When it comes to continuous recording, how long do you guess you could record with only 4 cameras recording continuous on 1080p on the 1 tb harddrive. And is there a looping setting so it can record over the old footage once the harddrive is full, or do you have to manually erase the harddrive before more recording can take place?
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I looked my list of downloads from motion events and i found that roughly for every 1m of video it uses 30mb of harddrive space so if you have 4 cameras recording continuously and the drive size is 1tb you get 1Terabytes = 1024 Gigabytes = 1,048,576 Megabytes 1,048,576/30 = 34952.533 Divide that by 4 for four cameras 34952.533/4 = 8738.13m 8738.13/ 60 = 145.635h 146.635/ 24 ~ 6.068148 So approximately 6.07 Days for each camera, You might have to double check my work and also if you are not using the resolution then you will use less hard drive space Hope this helps and have a great week ahead!

@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Oh and yes once the hard drive is full it will delete a set amount of days from the oldest records in the drive. If i remember correctly there is a setting for how many days you would like the system to delete before waiting to get full again.

do i have to hook it to the router? also is there WIFI connection and also what cables/connectors are you using? special tool? I am using the 4575 HD security system but it just sent me to your video just so you know. thanks
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Robbie! 1) do i have to hook it to the router? you only really need to connect it to the network if need to want to setup notifications(this is where CCTV unit will send you an email to a designated email address when movement is triggered) or otherwise if you want to see it on a smart device (iPhone etc). Otherwise you can just connect the unit to a screen via HDMI or VGA cable and it should work without the network (unless the setup requires a network in which case connect the router and set it up, then disconnect it after). 2) also is there WIFI connection and also what cables/connectors are you using? So there is no built in WiFi feature (to my knowledge) there is only a cable Ethernet connection so it must be connected either to a router for internet access, otherwise you can use a bridge device which connects wirelessly to the network. (A wireless bridge connects two wired networks together over WiFi. The wireless bridge acts as a client, logging in to the primary router and getting an Internet connection, which it passes on to the devices connected to its LAN Jacks.) Normally, you can just connect the unit directly to your router using the Ethernet cable provided and it should just work. So, the only cables which i used were those which were provided in the box and a couple of extra BCN cables to extend the existing cables so they could reach the designated install sites.(there are limitations on distance, you will find the further you go out the quality may reduce. if i remember correctly after 36m there will be a reduction in quality to 720p) Note: The reason why my unit is connected to a network switch is because i have wired my house with physical connections to every room. so it looks kinda like this: DVR ----> Network switch -----> Router. Yours may look like this: DVR -----> Router. (Imagine the arrows representing wires). 3) special tool? to my knowledge and with my install there were no special tools needed, you will really only need the standard tools like screwdrivers, a drill, drill bits and maybe a little willpower to get through installing all those cables! Hopefully, my long answer will help you out, let me know if you need anything else and have a great week ahead! Cheers

If you need to take it to a TV you will the HDMI cable is a good option for short distances. If you are running cable quite far you might want to switch down to micro HDMI so you don't have to drill large holes, or move a chunky cable around. I think you need to be careful how far you can actually run HDMI though because the quality is suppose to reduce as the distance increases, I think after 50 feet it is generally accepted that you would need to use a signal amplifier Cheers

Because they are thermal I didn't think there was an option for continuous recording (thats what a Swann rep told me). Question, when on thermal/motion detection only, how much does it record? 10sec, 2min? Or does it record as long as there is motion/thermal? Hello Jden Thank you for your kind words! I am still testing the waters with videos so its always great to see when a video just clicks and people enjoy it! So in regards to your question the answer is is really in two parts: 1) there is a pre-record feature built into homesafe viewer (so i suspect that it will be in all platforms including the interface itself), basically it "allows your DVR or NVR to record for a number of seconds before an event occurs." you will find that under the 'record parameter' setting in the 'record' tab. It doesn't say how many second but i suspect it should be long enough. 2) There is a post-recording setting found under the 'alarm' tab in the 'motion' setting. there is a couple of options there for how long you want to post-record ranging from 30s to 5 minutes. Unfortunately, there is no custom timer, but i am sure you will be able to pick one from that range that will suit your preference. Hope this helps and let me know if you need anything else. Have a great week ahead! 😀

I personally haven't issues with swanns remote viewing apps, but i have only used it on ios and windows. my pc is on a local network with the dvr. having said that if you are gonna use it primarily with the remote viewing apps, maybe, it might be a good idea to wait a little to see if a new updated software comes out that deals to the issues, or one of the reviewers posts a more positive update on the system. At the end of the day your the one spending money to buy a system that should work exactly the way you want it to, so taking a little bit more time won't hurt your pocket! Hope this helps!

LAX - Thanks for this. I have an older swann system with cameras inside and outside the house. Inside I have an issue with the 'clicking' of night vision. for about an hour each day this is a real problem. Do you find this happens with these newer cameras? Great review. Thanks for posting it. I may have more questions later
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, Hi there, If i understand what you mean by 'clicking' when it goes to a certain light threshold the camera will go in and out of night vision. if that is the case, then i only have seen it once or twice over a period of 1-2 minutes. I think it was because there was a tree which was casting a shadow onto the camera and the sun was shining through that tree. so the small change light had that effect. Having said this, i haven't seen it in the regularity you are talking about. I would probably suggest trying to do some trouble shooting with the old system before thinking about the newer cameras, could you potentially shift it slightly or maybe the camera needs a clean externally? Hope this helps! Cheers, Lakish

I have a older swann security box that crapped out on me. Can I use the cables from it and install this new box or will I have to rewire everything with the new cables?
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there For the 1080p camera the Bnc cables should work well, if you get a higher quality camera 5mp or 8mp you'll need to rewire with the higher quality cables usually included in the box for DIY cameras. Worse case scenario the older cables will reduce the quality of the cameras to the existing camera quality. Hope this helps you!

This has PIR thermal cameras... how come you said the tree branches trigger the motion? It's the reason I've ordered this setup... to stop that from happening. Is it still an issue with this setup? If so, I'll be returning it.
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Turns out the PIR was not enabled, so it automatically defaulted to using motion sensing and atm there is no functionality to turn PIR from the Homesafe Viewer application for windows (which is why I didn't see the option at the time). So it can only be done changed via the DVR when you connect a screen to it, or using the online app that accesses it through a web interface.

Nice video thanks! I've already asked this on another review, but will ask you too.. Is it possible to download the recorded video via the iphone or android app or pc software? or do you need to plug a usb into the DVR to be able share the video?
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
I just tried it and these are my results 1) when using iPhone you can push the record button while viewing live or recorded video. After this you can go to the recorded tab where you can playback the files. I suspect these files are kept on you phone, but the app doesn't give any functionality to export videos directly from the phone, you only have access to it via the app. If the file is in your storage i think you should be able to access the storage drive via PC connection.(Probably best to connect your phone to the pc and try to search for it in the phones storage drive.). 2) I suspect it is the same for android. (I wouldn't be able to tell you because i don't have the android app) 3) The PC software is fully functional and you can export video directly from the software. If i remember correctly, the video format will be in AVI, so it is readily useable. Hope this helps! 👊

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I have android, so if the live record function works on my phone it may be that the videos are available through a file browser on the phone or something. Using the PC would be great too. If it was saved in mp4 that would be a better file format for me, but it would be easy enough to convert to mp4. I think I've missed the post christmas sales on this stuff now but will keep my eyes out for a deal for sure :)

Hey there, Thanks for your question! If i am honest i am not really sure. To my knowledge, the focus is fixed so you shouldn't have to do anything with it. If you are finding that all cameras are not focused, it maybe an issue somewhere between dvr and monitor. You might have to do some basic troubleshooting to see if you can solve it. Such as using a different cable, different monitor, trying differenct aspect ratios and checking for possibly helpful functions on the Dvr options itself. My apologies for not being very useful, i haven't had this issue before. I do hope this helps you get going to finding a solution! Cheers

@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Great questions! if I am honest I have personally never tried making a wired camera wireless, but what I suspect you would be looking for is a wireless cctv transmitter and receiver. Some can be found on ebay and ali express. you might be lucky and a nearby electronics shop might have something for your application or maybe they could order something for you. I think the main things you will have to think about is the cost, the effectiveness of the product (for which you may need to hunt around for some reviews), and the transmission range (the distance between the wireless camera and the DVR) My suggestions would be to do some research on what you might use before you buy the cameras the worst thing that could happen is realizing that what you brought won't work to make the camera wireless or doesn't give a strong smooth signal. In terms of issues, I can honestly say I have had none so far, occasionally I had to tweak the cameras to get better viewing angles or had to clean the cameras because a spider would make a web on them. but theres' really nothing much I can say. I actually went away for a little while and found that while I was on roaming the cameras worked like a charm when the signal between me and my service provider was good. I don't know what your budget is but there is also another solution which would be to buy a separate wireless camera that works directly of the network. I think you will need to compare costs before you choose this over the wireless cctv transmitter and receiver, because this can generally be quite pricy! I really hope this helps you! Cheers

When it changes fro day time clear videos to night vision videos there are wave lines across the screen and some video go off line
@Lakish_Narayan
@Lakish_Narayan 5 жыл бұрын
Thats' very interesting, i had a similar issue with one of the cameras and found that the cable BNC connection was loose. Because the video goes offline, it could mean that that somewhere there is a fault in the connection. Because you are having the issue in multiple cameras you might want to check the power source i.e. where you have plugged in your adapter, check to see if you haven't overloaded the power point. The wave lines usually represent signal weakness and because it only happens in the night, could do with moisture or temperature fluctuations. So if can check to see if the cables are being exposed to something that the shouldn't be such as water etc. I suspect that IR lights turn on only in the night so it could be that extra power consumption leading to the failure of certain cameras. I think you will need to do a little trial and error to try and solve the problem I Hope this helps you let me know if you want me to suggest some other "possible fixes" Cheers

Be warned... Do not buy Swann! Full of blur problems and you need a magnifying glass to see the mouse cursor on the screen. Their customer support is a joke to, yougive them your phone number all the time and one still goes the repetative process of having totell them your model number etc etc etc. They have caused me alot of stress with their model DVR8-4780.

Hi Pollyfodder. We’d love to assist you with the issues you reported having with your DVR-4780. We’re giving you some information below which might be helpful for your case, but you can always reach us on 1800 788 210 (Australia) or tech@swann.com. The most accurate detection option on our wired systems is to use 2-factor detection (enable “PIR and Motion” within the settings menu). This detection method requires both factors to be true before you will get a recording, therefore the PIR sensor must detect heat AND there must also be motion in the image for it to be considered a true event. You can also combine the video based detection with features such as a motion mask so that you can further define movement to areas that you are interested in such as a path rather than tree branches, as you did on your video 3_LvBnif1nk, just have in mind that that masking applies to pixel movements, that’s not a mask for PIR. In your videos you rightly point out that the red PIR box is showing, however there is no additional ‘running man’ icon to indicate that the camera is also detecting motion, so in this scenario you should not be getting a recording or alert. Your camera is facing a concrete path so we believe this is likely to be radiating a high amount of heat given the hot climate where you live, Townsville. There is always the option to turn off PIR detection if you wanted to, which would revert the camera to solely video-based detection like on Swann’s older systems before we started including PIR heat sensors about two years ago. However you are likely to find that relying on a system with no PIR detection will have a significantly higher number of false triggers compared to using the 2-factor detection. We hope that some of this information may assist in improving the performance of your system. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know. Regarding the ghosted images: updating the firmware may solve this issue. Again, if you need any help with this, please reach us on 1800 788 210 (Australia) or tech@swann.com. If you’d like to have a look at the manual, it is available on the link below: www.swann.com/au/downloads/dl/file/id/2021/product/1426/4780_series_manual_en.pdf - Swann team

These cameras SUCK! I have the same problem you have with the IR function. If these cameras face your siding of the house or have anything in the way (eaves trough etc...) to much they wont work right at all. You WILL get a hotspot and the cameras will not focus right at all! I have two of my cameras doing this. I think Swann should fire their engineers for something as stupid as this.
