This is is because you see other people happier and stronger when they are in a relationship. But this is just an appaerance! It is NOT because other people seem happy that they are indeed happy. I don't know if the song is about romantic love necessarily. I think the man is saying that love (whatever kind it is) will save people from the darkness of their life but it won't save him because he thinks he's too far gone or he doesn't think he has love in his life. However the happier instrumental that kicks in halfway into the song and in the end seems to disagree, even interrupting him before he gets to the "me" in the chorus. This could mean that he either doesn't truly think love won't save him or that, at least deep down, he hopes it will. That's just how I interpreted it

Adam Dude in what way did I gatekeep? I’d love for swans to be “world famous”. I’m sure we can all acknowledge that outside of the certain music communities online the band isn’t that well known at all. Recently, the majority of people who are familiar with them is through KZbin popular music bloggers like Anthony Fantano or critically invested platforms that have given the band high ratings theough music sites such as pitchfork and rateyourmusic. You have to realize online presence isn’t as big as you think it is. If your social feeds/environment is geared towards viewing content related to musical bands such as Swans then it may not seem like that though. For someone to claim they are world famous assumes anywhere you go around the world they are known by all people. If you were to look outside of the communities that I pointed out before, the general population are left clueless to who they are. It’s just the truth, no disrespect or gatekeeping there. I’m not one of those idiots who care about how underground and mysterious a musical act is. I wish for the most exposure and appreciation possible for these very talented people.

listen to Soundtracks for the Blind, those are all their best tracks ;)

They're really more of an album band. As Fernando said, 'Soundtracks for the Blind' is excellent, but I don't know if it's the best place to start, since it's much more ambient than a lot of their other work. I would personally suggest listening to 'Children of God' first, since it's got what I think is the best combination of their many moods and styles. Then try 'White Light from the Mouth of Infinity', which is similar but more emotionally layered. Then I would check out 'The Seer', which is a great way to get into their longer, more textural work. Then check out 'To Be Kind', which is the somewhat more varied sequel to 'The Seer', and then I think you'd be ready for 'Soundtracks'.
