Superb video thanks - My Diplomat Aero had a dry nib. I copied your method, used a brass feeler gauge to floss and widen the nib v e r y slightly and then very gently 'cut the plastic nib feed with a steel feeler gauge so that it was a micron of two wider. Now the nib writes like a dream. A big big thank you!

I've swapped countless nibs like that, but I have to say I love when a nib comes with the housing. I wanted some steel nib pens that I liked, and could could afford. I bought the Conklin Crescent filler, and three Duragraph from Goulet, and I bought a different size nib for each. Since the nib comes in a housing, I can switch nib sizes right in the middle of writing, if I so desire. It just takes a few seconds. My intent is to put a gold nib on the Crescent Filler, but for now being able to change nib sizes so easily and safely helps greatly in some of the projects I'm now working on.

A little off-topic but I just received my broad Aero this past week after hearing Rachel rave about how much she likes hers an older episode of Write Now, and I absolutely love it! Best steel nib ever. I probably wouldn't have thought to pick up this pen without her recommendation and I'm so happy I did :) Thanks for all you do!

Thank you for this video! I bought a brand-new Diplomat Excellence A a few years ago that had a nib that wasn't very good and for some reason I thought the entire nib assembly had to be replaced to fix it. I reached out to a couple of dealers and the US importer and I even went so far as to contact Diplomat in Germany to see if I could get another assembly when COVID hit and that was that. The pen sat in its box in the back of a drawer until I saw your tutorial and in minutes the nib was replaced with a Goulet M! Now it writes like a dream! Thank you!

First time tinkering hint. Take some masking tape and wrap the barrel and put a line that indicates the feed slit cut of the nib. Other pens are less expensive to play with. The #6 nibs Goulet sells are worthy. Do not forget to scrub any residual machine oil from the feed side of the nib. Hand lotion can mess with flow too. My brand of kitchen plastic wrap gives me a solid good clean grip. We all risk dropping or abusing a pen nib .... and yes the Goulet nibs are worthy. Now to find some ammonia cleaner for a sluggish 20+ year old favorite.

What a magnificent review of safe friction feed nib swapping! My Goulet Pens acquisitions include a Diplomat Esteem, a Jiinhao 8802 Shell, and a Jinhao 159. I find the Diplomat and the Jinhao 8802 to write so well from the box that I won't interfere with perfection. I got the Jinhao 159 specifically to try out the Goulet 1.5 mm Stub -- worked fine about a year ago. But, I wouldn't have dared the swap without helpful commentary like this.

Thanks! This just helped me with a deep clean. I used to be great with cleaning my pens every few weeks but I had too many inked up and fell behind. My Aero was last cleaned 10 months ago 😱 and even though I soaked the nib/grip unit overnight a few times, I kept seeing faint spots of color on the towel after cleaning. Normally this is not an issue because I just fill the pen with the same ink and continue on. But I'm reducing the number of inked pens and wanted to put this one away clean. I was about to pull out an ultrasonic cleaner. This allowed me to gently brush the entire feed - and finally got that bit of ink that was hiding out in the channel. 👍🏾

It would have been nice to compare how the new nib compared to the old nib (line size, saturation). In Europe one can buy Diplomat Section units that screw in place of the old Section without having to remove the nib.

Hi Brian! Wonderful video. I started watching thinking there's nothing new for me here. But now I realize the mistake I've been making (I've been pulling the nib and feed straight out the way you showed might damage the little feed tube). I'm going to tag this as #gouletqa - could you talk about differences between different no. 6 nibs (bock, jowo, schmidt, etc) in a future video? It's always a little nerve wracking buying a nib not knowing whether it'll fit even though both pen and nib are rated no. 6 (or no. 5 for that matter)

Question around the adjusting the position of the nib once it fitted in, does the performance of the ink delivery changes once when its lower or a bit higher on the feed? I never even knew that you could bring the nib up a little more. IO would simply “JAM” for a lack of better term; it in the unit till its no more shifting.

What other kind of fits are there besides friction fit? How can you tell if a nib is not meant to be removed? 1 more, does changing the feed matter when changing the nib sizes? IE if you go from a extra fine nib to a bold nib does that require a different feed with a larger ink channel? Thanks.
