I enjoyed the brief aside on how annoying phillips screws are. I wish robertson/square drive was more popular in the US as its the best I've ever used but Canada hoards them all. I was assembling a bed and had to drive 32 deck-type screws through 3/4" maple slats into solid cherry and a #2 square head made it a 3 minute process. No slipping, no stripping, no cam out. It was wood-screw-driving bliss.

I was nervous watching you working over that speaker cone, having myself ruptured the original cone on an Altec 417B speaker in the past. Then there was the windstorm when the window was open, which blew things around and tore the original cone on a 15" square magnet speaker from my Ampeg Superbreverb, which I carelessly left cone facing upwards. It was replaced by an Altec that sounds better, but still... I'm very careful with speaker cones now, and always have the cones facing the ground or covered by something solid. Just got a Rola 8 ohm. "C10N" made in the Jensen factory, and another 4 ohm. Jensen C10N, my favorite speaker, at least for 10". Speaking of 10", I have a Weber 10F150 and 10A150. and they sound much different, the 10A150 (A for AlNiCo) is more sensitive, and much louder, not sure if I like it more though, but they are in different amps: GA-14 and GA-18 (I loves Gibson amps). They sound so good as is, but the 8 ohm C10N is likely going to replace the 10A150 soon. The 4 ohm. C10N is more problematic, most amps not being designed for use with a 4 ohm. speaker, except the Champ of course. That's where my idea of getting a head and cabinet was born, and then I found Barefaced Audio, but will I buy that head which can be used with 4/8/16 ohm. speaker load (is "load" the right term?). Decisions decisions....I'm getting old, and the health problems suck, but my social security money they stole from me is being returned now, and I want to buy things that will give me happiness, and good tone makes me happy..........cheers!

11:30 very good advice to consider special design for alnicos. To be honest I expected to switch speakers as I want to. Also independently from impedance. So is there an alnico special designed cabinet existing from Barefaced currently? I researched a lot the last time and you are THE cabinet manufacturer for me. Looking forward to get one of these beauties soon. There are also more questions like why is the radical 212 Looking different from backside compared to the Uprising ?

Is the locking nut in a slight recess? If you drilled that to tightly slot the nut flush with the wood in it might provide a little more friction to stop it moving.

I'd like to check out the G12M65 cream instead of a G12H75 cream in my barefaced - does it make sense without the sealing material?

Just put any kind of foam tape on the back of the surround, between the driver and the baffle, or there’s a fairly high risk of annoying buzzes, rattles or distortion.

You are based in the UK somewhere I hope? Not the USA? Appreciate you sharing the knowledge... Rolling off is literally the shape taken as a note plucked dies into silence or it's own end...? Right?

Yes, UK! Rolling off is referring to the upper and lower limits of frequency response, not time (note envelope).

Speaking of changing speakers… I’m saving up for the extra low-weight Uprising with either the Neo Creamback or the Neo V-Type. The frequency charts don’t look very different, one or two dB here or there, which is probably within the limits of deviance within a model. I was planning on ordering one type and maybe replacing it with the other or even two V30s which I have here, as well. However, could you possibly record a comparison of these or in general the most likely candidates for the heavier side of guitar in your fantastic cabs? I have very fond memories of my 1960 AV from the mid 90s, but also always liked half closed back for clean and crunch. Any help getting in that direction but without the 4x12 narrow cone of intelligibility that you offer the solution for would make my day, nah, week.

Yes, I think those videos would be of great interest - just a question of finding the time to do them!

Phillips screws appear to be designed primarily for woodworking where it is important not to strip the grooves made by the screws out of the wood. Personally, I’m not a fan as over torquing is generally very preventable.

Mentioning the ev12l, do you recommend ordering a custom cabinet for that Speaker only due to the 8 wholes or any other considerations?

So you’re a fan of making front loaded cabinets, do you find this makes speakers like the Vintage 30 too clear in the lower mids?

I see that you cabinets have the speaker baffle solidly connected to the cabinet like for example many Fender combo amps which also have a separate grill frame. Many amps and cabs have the grill cloth attached to the baffles and then that attaches to the cab. What kind of effect would these different methods have? From a pure solidity perspective it seems logical to tightly join the baffle directly to the cab. You talk about the cabs as though it’s all about directing the sound waves and air. I get this but isn’t the cabinet always going to add some resonances even if undesired. That’s why I am wondering about the baffle design. I”m considering cabinets at the moment for recording purposes. I can either buy cabinets or make them because I have the tools and I actually made a new cabinet for a Fender Twin because the original was falling apart. My cabinet is way more solid than Fender’s original so I know I can build them to high standard but it’s time consuming.

I’m also wondering about the advantages of the AVD design for recording purposes especially since I”m into micing in various ways to capture room sounds and not just using a close mic. Obviously, if I build cabs myself they will not have the AVD feature.

They do have videos up explaining construction and how resonance is mitigation done inside the cab.

Grill tabs! Why is that so hard for manufacturers to add!? I’ve added a bit of fabric to all my grills. Hey we got the same Cordless drill 🤣
@BarefacedAudio2 жыл бұрын
I wasn't keen on adding them because I didn't want to encourage people to take their grills off - but it helps a lot if we have a driver issue in final testing!

I've been enjoying the recent series of uploads - some great info on the way sound works for the uninitiated. I have been planning my own compact 1x10 cab builds - one with a Celestion Greenback and one with a Jenson P10R - although whilst researching getting the most round sound from a small box, came across Barefaced (who I recognise from the bass world - didn't realise you did guitar cabs). I came across the video series after I'd already bought the speakers and plywood. Starting to think I'd be better off buying a cab or two - but what to do with the stuff I've bought? I assume there's probably not much saving for an 'unloaded' cab, and that you might not be keen on selling one?
@BarefacedAudio2 жыл бұрын
That is bad timing, are you a guitarist perchance? ;-) We do sell unloaded cabs but as you correctly guessed the saving is minimal because they're more work for us: barefacedaudio.com/pages/unloaded-guitar-cabs
