Maheshwar city, about 100 km away from Indore, is popular for its religious and historical importance. Ahilyabai Holkar, the great female ruler of the country, declared Maheshwar as her capital and built the Ahilya fort here. Built on the banks of river Narmada, Ahilya Fort is the center of attraction among tourists. Ahilyabai added numerous temples to this city. Kashi Vishwanath Temple, built by Ahilyabai, is also an amazing specimen of unmatched architecture. An exceptionally old temple based on an island between the quick stream of Narmada is a Baneshwar Mahadev Temple. This temple is a fine example of an ancient architect technique. And last but not least, keep some money aside to splurge on worldwide famous Maheshwari sarees. Queen Ahilyabai Holkar spurred the tradition of Maheshwari sarees. In all terms, Maheshwar's religious significance is known to everyone, but in terms of tourism, this place is no less than heaven.

इंदौर से लगभग 100 किलोमीटर दूर महेश्वर शहर अपने धार्मिक और ऐतिहासिक महत्व के लिए लोकप्रिय है। देश की महान वीरांगना शासक अहिल्याबाई होलकर ने महेश्वर को अपनी राजधानी घोषित कर यहां अहिल्या फोर्ट का निर्माण करवाया। नर्मदा नदी के किनारे बना ये किला पर्यटकों के बीच आकर्षण का केंद्र है।अहिल्याबाई द्वारा ही बनाया गया काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर भी बेजोड़ शिल्पकला का अद्भुत नमूना है। यहां धार्मिक और पर्यटक दृष्टि से श्रद्धालुओं का जमावड़ा लगा रहता है। नर्मदा नदी के बीचों बीच बना बाणेश्वर महादेव मंदिर भी पुरातन तकनीक का नायब नमूना है। वहीं महेश्वर की 'महेश्वरी साड़ी' तो दुनियाभर में प्रसिद्ध हैं ही। इसका श्रेय भी अहिल्याबाई को ही जाता है। महेश्वर का धार्मिक महत्व तो जगजाहिर है ही, लेकिन पर्यटन के लिहाज से ये जगह किसी स्वर्ग से कम नहीं है।
