One of the biggest pieces of advice that I live by was actually a question answered by Aurelio Voltaire. Someone asked him what they should do to get their art business started but hasn't done anything, Voltaire just sighed and said, "What do I need to mail you a pencil?" No one is going to do the art for you. The art world isn't easy but you're guaranteed to miss the shots you never take.

LOVE this ED! Not to sound like I already knew but because I've observed other artists work their ASSES off and I've seen them succeed eventually (good and "bad" art, doesn't matter). I know all I have to do is work hard, f*ck up, learn, improve, f*ck up some more, and keep working, harder and smarter. I went all in 3 years ago and I've failed a lot but also have some big wins. I get discouraged from time to time but it never makes me slow down or stop producing, I adjust, shift and keep going. So much of what you say and what you're doing resonates with my take on the kind of art I make. My work has no deep meaning or inspired by some intellectual crap, I just like color and design. And nothing makes me happier than when people say "I don't why but I love that piece". It doesn't matter why, my work is mostly abstract so there's no narrative or particular intention. It's like chemistry between people. There's a reaction that then makes an attraction. And hopefully they're attracted enough to want it in their life! It sucks that you're so far away! If I ever make it back over there I would love to visit with you. You have an open invitation to visit us in Houston Texas and my services as a tour guide, drinking and arting companion are included for free! ;) Cheers and THANK YOU FOR YOU!!!

The two things that worked for me were 1) LITERALLY reprogramming my subconscious mind and beliefs using subliminals, which programmed me for success and 2) YES, HARD WORK and LONG HOURS. But in my experience, unless the subconscious self-sabotaging beliefs are changed, NOTHING works, no matter how badly you want it consciously. I HAD to get my subconscious mind in agreement-and then, my work really took off. Kudos on your amazing success and gorgeous work-you certainly earned it!

You're actually 100% correct with what you say here. Myself, as an artist realized that I personally don't want it bad enough (anymore). I personally used to, but lost that drive and passion while hitting every single obstacle in my way until I literally had enough. Being homeless multiple times, being in crazy art college debt, spending over 16 years in and out out of design school, getting turned down or screwed over by people and companies over and over and over again. I've personally have had enough. I've realized that I'm much much happier with a boring, even mediocre 9-5 life. I'm venting my story here, so it doesn't have to be your story. I still support other artists/designers and want then to succeed, but for me, I've hit the end of the road about two years ago and ain't looking back. I'm 43 now and choose my mental health over the struggle of an artist.

Thank you Chris - it's a series of experiences I can relate to very well. There are many times I feel like giving up but for now I continue. It breaks us on a regular basis and I often feel that I would be better off doing something without the stress and strain. Maybe that will happen one day, who knows? In the meantime I shall continue to do the best I can and hope I have enough energy and motivation to keep pushing. So far, I have and it doesn't seem to be slowing which is a relief! I really appreciate you sharing this with everyone, thank you!

Great video, thx. Also loneliness is a big issue here: it is you and you and you. Not like in the entertainment business or team sports and other areas. One has to learn to deal with the many hours alone in the studio, by the computer or visiting exhibits alone etc. One has to accept being with the same old person day and night. Of course there are friends and social life, but this is just a little part of the 24 hours if you want to succeed. And we are not talking about months, but years. And find out how to survive in all this - maybe give yourself happy moments alone, whatch a movie, go to a concert etc. in between working hours ...

I do not work hard enough. I think I have an idea what's happening and this could be happening to others as well. Namely, I am stuck in my "hobby" mentality, while I want to get much better results that just "hobby" results. So I think there is a "switch" that one have to turn. The switch from "hobby" over to "professional" mentality of work. And that's not easy, it is a big step, but it has to be taken. Maybe a nice subject for the Q&A. cheers.

If you want something so badly it aches inside then I'm pretty confident in saying that you'll do whatever it takes to achieve the thing you are yearning for. So many people want the end result but not the work in between. All I'm trying to do is promote the questions you should be asking yourself and trying to come up with an answer. I stick by what i say because i see it every day on social media and those who write to me. After 13 years I want this more than ever and I work harder than ever before because I have a goal and an objective and I will not stop until i reach it - however hard or difficult it may be. Hope that helps...

Let's be honest. In the art world, what REALLY matters is connections. If one has the support of art galleries, museums, curators, art consultants (for ANY reason that most of the times has nothing to do with art or talent), nothing else is important. Work of awful quality and aesthetics can be promoted and sold. In the biggest galleries around the world we see terrible works. Mostly. Terrible works. It's not because the artist really wanted to be artist. It's because someone for some reason decided to invest in that person and promote their work, and establish their name.

The painting looked like shit and drives me crazy. My dog a wolf dog is yanking on my sleeve. He wants to go outside. I recover a bit and put on my coat, walk through my neighborhood. Make coffee. Ringo continues to sleep again. The bell rings, Alie a wanderer is at the door. God bless you, he says, I'll give him some coins. After a cup of coffee he leaves again. Mixing colors, adding crimson red, a bit of white, a bit of white, that looks like it. Can't concentrate, hardly have any more money, pay rent is it possible, is it not possible? Don't just keep thinking. The phone rings, you might want to help with the renovation of my house, you know. It is Adrie a friend also artist. Only he stayed with a 10 year older woman who has money. Sure I help you, I pay you for it, Adrie says. To be continued. from the life of an artist.

I am planning to become an artist, simply put. My goal is to be fully set up withing two years to open a website, possibly an etsy shop, or pursue other online and real world sales avenues. Here is my problem and question. Right now I only have a few paintings due to lack of space. I realise I will need quite a few pieces befoe I can pursue any of the forementioned sales avenues. Unitl I move into a place with more space, adding to my exsisting art is an impossibility. How many pieces do you think would be a healthy number to start out with? I dont want to start out and appear unprofessional by only having a few pieces. Furthermore, what other things could I be working on in the meantime, so as to be ready when my assigned goal date rolls around? I would like to have all my ducks in a row long before I begin working on my sales. Do you think I should just wait until I can focus only on the art, or would it be a good idea to do the other things now, just to get them out of the way?

shannie medrano good heavens! I can’t possibly try to answer all of that becuase it’s way too complicated a question and one that doesn’t have a specific answer. I was forced into a corner by which pint I had 100 reasonable paintings but that doesn’t mean you need 100. I’m not sure what you should start with; only to say that the wider the choice the more possibilities you have. As for everything else? There’s never a time when it’s all ready - just get things going and develop as you go I guess? Very tough one to answer as it depends on what you define as being ready!!

There are a few hundred people who have my work hanging in their homes internationally, and wanting it badly enough has nothing to do with it. The economies are such that art sales suck and it is getting worse every day. I have a painting I will put up against anything out there and anyone who can help me sell it, I will give them 15% (1 million). Any takers?
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 4 жыл бұрын
Would disagree a little. Fully appreciate that the global economy is rubbish but I have such a desire to stay doing this that I will sit on the phone every day ringing organisations and potential clients (in all kinds of commercial environments) until someone takes notice. So that's how badly I want it - to continue to move forward in an economy that is constantly trying to do the opposite. I cannot rely on others to help me sell because no one gives a s**t as much as I do. I offer the same as you to people for a commission to sell and no-one wants to do anything. Give me a link to your work and I will happily see if I can earn my 15%!!!!

@@SwarezArt , your brutal advice to artists could have been more factual and informative. In reality any artist can upload a painting on Ebay , Etsy or any other website and sell . Its not that difficult. What is even better is one can buy these artists paintings on the internet . Take better , more professional photos of the art hanging on walls in trendy settings . Write a more descriptive comment about the artist and painting , double or triple the price and sell them . Its not rocket science .

@@bobdooly3706 maybe - but creating something sustainable and with substance takes huge effort. It depends on what you want to build really. I chose to comitt to a website that takes up a lot of my time and is built with longevity and around visitors. I care about what I do and that will ultimately be reflected by those who like and enjoy that too. Sure, it's not complicated in principle but to do it with quality and substance still requires effort and dedication. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi! I see your point, I'm also an artist and a mother. I don't think getting angry with guys because they don't have your kind of responsibilities helps. I'm an artist and a mother and the message resonates with me too, because there are lots of things we can ask do better. In my case I'm reading the book 'art write' and working on rewriting my artist statement, bio, etc. Sometimes producing work is not enough, you have to get lots of people to see it as well (KZbin videos help!). I feel your frustration about not having someone helping!

90% of the population in the world is poor, this include a wide spectrum of people that practice some disciplines that we can call jobs (labors, technicians, degrees-workers, etc.) Included yours. So you are saying that that's the reason of the failure of the system as a society, "Not enough hard work". Sorry for dissent, but I think that is a lot more complex than you portrayed. We don't need to scratch that much to put a lot ( may be most of the cases)of samples of people that with much less effort, crativity, talents, merits, than others reach "success". This world is full of poverty, and if you are just thinking about your job let me tell you that there's space for wider consciousness. To accept your opinion as correct is like accept that Trump or Biden are genuinely the best human beings choices in our country capables to lead our society to a better way of life. Is simply more complex. Main Stream Media want us to see it that way. I want to think your are a great guy with a not correct but very popular opinion about particular subject. Thanks for the walk through background!

It is more than work. You can work as much as you want. And it even does not depend on talent. Making a living with art is a question of luck. It is not possible to do it on your own like this chap. You need to get into the big galleries. Small galleries are a complete waist of time.
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 3 жыл бұрын
Um, excuse me - 'this chap' is me and I make a living and have done for ten years so, with respect, your comment is incorrect and poorly observed. It is absolutely possible to do this on your won and I am proving that every single day!!! Luck has NOTHING to do with me being successful. If that's what you really believe you will get nowhere. I am succeeding because I want to and choose my own destiny. Why would you leave it to a big gallery? Probably because it saves you having to do all that work yourself. And that's another reason why artists don't succeed - they won't take responsibility of their own future. I did and look where I am. No galleries, no trust fund, no savings, no luck, no handouts and no silver spoon. Sheer hard work and determination. Try it - you'll be surprised where it can take you.

@Tshego2000
@Tshego2000 3 жыл бұрын
@@SwarezArt the other half is talent. I love your content and my intention is not to troll or minimize your rigorous hard work. In the real world the playing field isn't perfectly level therefore my 10 000 hours could be someone else's 20 000 hours. Inequality is a fundamental part of reality that is unavoidable and talent exists. All this means is that If person A is talented and person B isn't; then if we all work our asses off to the extreme, person A will always crush Person B. But there is another problem. Talent might be able to predict creative potential to a certain extent, but creative achievement is a bit more hard to quantify. the essence of what I am trying to say is that some people can work for decades and still get nowhere because they had nothing under the hood to work with in the first place or they are just unlucky. Art is a brutal battle field with a very finite amount of successes.
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 3 жыл бұрын
It's a great response and thank you for sharing it. The last sentence especially. But I still believe that talent is only a stepping stone. I am proof of that and whether you perceive if I have any or not is a matter of your own perceptions. But I absolutely agree that you can indeed work and work and work and get nowhere because of how closed-minded this industry is. Again you're right about quantifying achievement and success because that in itself is measured in all kinds of ways. I just wat to earn a living and I do that. But does that make me successful? Who knows!!! Really appreciate your thoughts and thank you for sharing them!
