Honestly, serious props to SWAT and that Negotiator. 100% by the book, and an extra 20% effort because he was having a manic episode. None of them would sleep at night knowing they killed someone who’s having a psychotic break. I really hope he gets the help he needs, and I’m proud of the Officers involved. Also, someone said the Sharpshooter “missed” and called it a warning shot. Some context about me, I’m in College taking Criminal Justice to become a local Sheriffs Deputy in my county, and my Uncle was the SWAT commander from 1993-2014 at the agency I’m going to work at, he confirmed warning shots are viable and are used when lethal force is not authorized. It’s a tactic to demonstrate overwhelming force to a subject, making the odds higher of them surrendering. I sent Unc this video to analyze, and he said that warning shot was actually introduced in his department around early 2000’s for unhinged and mentally ill people if it ever came to that. The tactic is to scare them, which can break their episode for a small while in hopes of them surrendering while they’re “themselves” and relatively level minded. Hope that helps!

They walk a fine line, often negotiators and TRE will disagree over a situation just look at Waco for an example, but in this case subject clearly wasn’t highly responsive to negotiation and was pushing towards the “ima kms” route anyway, it was likely done for officer safety but also the subjects as it allowed greater control for TRE from an exterior position. But you’ve definitely raised a great point, they could’ve spent longer negotiating but if it only agitated the subject and then they became violent, with the TRE not having opened those lines of sight there* would’ve been greater threat for all involved.

The US is huge and there’s a large number of cops, most of which do their job fine. I think it is the fact that the media only shows the bad stuff that makes everyone think that US cops are a**holes. Cuz yk a cop doing something bad sparks outrage and outrage brings views which in turn bring money. If they’d show good stuff not that many people would watch unfortuntely. Im not american so this is my outside view and just my opinion. But this is what media does. Even in my home country you mostly see news about situations where the police was incompetent but rarely news about when they did something right. But yes good job for the authorities in this video
