Shanmukhapriya / Chamaram in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music is a scale that is complete in itself, the notes that are present being Shadja, Chatusruti Rishaba, Sadharana Gandara, Prati Madhyama, Pancama, Shuddha Dhaivata, and Kaisiki Nishada. I love Shanmukhapriya, the ragam with a splendorous melody...matchless ....is very beautiful in all the sthayis. The nyasa on RShabha is particularly endearing. Altogether its a raga that has enormous scope both in terms of expansion and in evoking moods. Though not technically a “ghana” raga, tana in the raga is captivating! The heart-melting lyrics compliment the raga's pleading quality, resulting in a passionate outpouring of sheer musical beauty! Amrutha Venkatesh is very much aware of singing this beautiful composition so softly at the same time with the vibrance needed in the short phrased lyrics as entailed by the ragam., her vinyaasam @Charanam3 -' pankajanabha shaure kuru mama kushalam' did present a lovely exposition of Shanmugapriya. The swarakalpana followed is very outstanding with the raga's phrases/sancharas full of varied shades and dimensions
