These folks that don’t live in these areas need to understand that our Sheriff’s departments in rural areas are already overworked and understaffed. They cover large areas at a time. If a deputy or the sheriff himself is on your property because someone overstepped and called about a kitten, then said deputy or sheriff is potentially MILES away from a true emergency where their presence is actually needed. It’s nice that he came on his down time but once again, Sheriff’s and deputies in the country, most have more than one job as well as their own families and homes that need their attention and frivolous calls take them away from that for no reason.

Countryside/rural vets where I live will be even more like this than city vets too. They are usually used to dealing with large animals eg farm animals or horses which are often put down instead of treated for many things unfortunately. City vets will usually give more options for small animals because they know how attached people are to their pets. We took our elderly cat to the vet in a rural town and we were the only cat there. It was all dogs and they had a side building for large animals in trailers. They said most people don’t even bring their cats to the vets because they dont treat them the same as dogs and don’t want to spend the money on them. I grew up in a less rural town where people would be taking their kids hamsters, budgies, rabbits etc to the vet but in the country it’s a lot less like that. Animals are often seen differently and more like working animals than pets in the same way. It’s the same with the vets attitudes in the countryside so even if he took his cat there they may have said to put it down or something anyway.

This is so right. I've known a few farmers in my time who only had the vet out when it was absolutely necessary. Same thing when we owned race horses. I'm lucky to live within a half hour of one of the bigger animal supply houses, where I can get an array of things at much less cost than the vet sells it for. I'm not against going to the vet or calling one in, when needed. Many things can be treated at home just fine and without overly stressing the animal.

I live a block away from my vet. My lethargic cat was told to wait a week and a half to come for a checkup. The next day my cat was like 10 times worse. I called. They told me to call back later and see if there was any openings. I caved and called a second vet. They agreed to let him in same day. After the 3rd question the asked, they basically snatched the cat away and rushed him to the back room. Coming back to us about 10 minutes later saying the cat needed the emergency room. Took the cat and about 4 days, 1 surgery, and about $3k later the little guy made it through. They informed me that if I had waited the time the first vet wanted. My cat would have died from FLUTD/UTI. The crazy part? The first vet told me to lay off the wet food for my cat! Point of story? Just because you are close doesn't mean they will help you.

During years of owning pets I've had situations where I've raced animals to the nearest vet 15min away, raced to the nearest emergency vet 2+ hours away, waited until the next day or business hours before going to the vet, and solely treated at home. Every situation is different, lots of the time treatment at home can be as effective as stressing getting to vets. Living rural is a whole thing.

Especially cats. They’re not like dogs, they are generally way more stressed at the vet and in the car. I took my mom’s cat to the vet after 2 seizures, she was very sick and it was the right thing to do but I know the stress of the car and the vet sped up her passing. She passed literally 5 minutes after we got there. I would have rather he passed with us at home.

They are overworked! Animal owners should know how to treat most things themselves. My great grandfather and grandfather were "lay vets". As in not formally educated but they could cure about anything and only needed a vet for surgeries and serious issues. Today people can't take a sh__ without someone holding their hand. RIDICULOUS!!!

We kept medication’s on hand and like heavy duty medication‘s on hand so that we could treat horses ourselves. Everybody is trained and looking over the horses every day what to look out for and we regularly treated our own horses. When you have 50 horses that visits could literally put you out of business and we’re here to save horses not get our business shut down so vets are human beings, therefore non-vets who are also human beings can learn how to take care of their animals.

Student. If I had legal access to Oral and SubQ antibiotics, they probably would only be going for their rabies vaccines. Obviously for severe cases, not much will substitute a trained professional, but for anyone who has grown up with animals and is familiar with their behavior and personalities, most ailments can be handled in the home. :)

Same. I'm from WVA and then moved to Southern CA. Talk about culture shock! I used to doctor the animals and feed them in WVA. I took a cat to the vet in CA and was in shock when I had to pay $600 because of poor diet (only cat food). As long as there are rodents and birds around, a cat will never starve. Dogs need to be fed, but I feel an outdoor cat needs to be supplemented with cat food. They are perfectly capable of fending for themselves if food is available. People in the cities seem to want to humanize their animals. btw, I love animals and probably prefer them over some humans sometimes. Some of these vets are money hungry, and I've seen and had to pay an arm and a leg to a vet before that knew my animal would probably die anyways. Vets are a good thing, but sometimes their solution isn't always the best one.

I swear, it's gotten to a point where I won't read one comment on an actual animal video. Idc if somebody makes a cute video about some animal they saw at a zoo somewhere, or if it's on a farm, or if it's someone's pet dog or cat that did a cute thing. There is always at least one, but oftentimes many, in the comments that are finding something, anything, they can pick out of that video to call the person an animal abuser. To these people, there is always something that somebody isn't doing good enough. Don't get me wrong, I love animals. But, first of all, they are not humans, like most of these people like to think. Second of all, it bothers me because this actually discourages people from attempting to rescue an animal from shelters or help an animal they find. People don't want to do that anymore because of shit just like this.

The entire problem basically happened because he did a piss poor job of explain this. Which isn't even the first time its happened. Its part of the problem with the shorts format. You dont have time to actually explain everything properly. Because he does shorts he looks like a total asshole to his pets and animals a LOT. Like an insane amount. He isnt at all in reality, but you have to watch multiable shorts to understand that. Most people just arn't gonna do that. They will see one here or there when the platform gives it to them. If those happen to be the ones that make him look like an ass, of which there are a lot with out context. Shit like this is just gonna keep happening. There is no real fix for this barring just no longer doing shorts. Nate needs to accept this and just deal with the fall out and consequences of choosing to do shorts. He already seems like he very well understands this and accepts that people are going to over react. Hell if nate couldn't handle the harassment he wouldnt be living streaming his life as is. He is actively choosing to be a modern reality TV star. This is what happens when you do that. He finds the benefits more than the negatives clearly, and as long as hes actually acting in good faith and doing things right. No amount of harassment will be more then a minor annoyence so long as the authorities in his area arn't assholes. Which they appear to not be, so hes find.

Animal husbandry is a very good skill to have for those living in rural areas, but also in big cities too! Happy that you knew how to handle an overheated kitten. I grew up with cats and dogs - fed them, toileted them, medicated them, and cleaned up after them. I've also nursed newborn kittens, which was exhausting but one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. One day, there were seven kittens in an apparently abandoned litter under our back porch. We never knew what happened to their normally attentive feral mother, so my family and I took them in. Every two hours, we were up taking turns feeding, and then cleaning them up after they were burped and toileted. We fed them using miniature baby bottles made for dolls (but they worked!), and warm, damp cotton washcloths to clean and groom their fur, because they best emulate a cat's tongue. All seven survived and thrived. Though each got their own name, we humorously named them collectively “The Magnificent Seven“, and kept all of them.

When you manage to get an appointment, you usually end up feel fleeced, your pet is stressed out, and the treatment plan is often off the wall. It was not nearly so bad a few years back. I wonder if all the vet clinics in the world are being taken over by financial firms. It's disheartening. I can't imagine how bad having a sick pet/working animal would be with thousands of know-it-alls (who likely don't even have animals) judging from the sidelines.

Vet from a country in Europe here. From what I've heard, in the US a vast majority of vets clinics and hospitals are now owned by big companies with non-vets making the decisions and, allegedly, forcing vets to follow certain medical schemes in order to reach sale points. Also allegedly, the vets who don't agree to join their "community" or outright sell their clinics to them get harassed enough to do it. The essence of medicine and providing tailored care to pet patients and support to owners is thus lost. In the UK this has, as I've heard, also been a trend and it has taken serious root in Western Europe, BUT there has been some resistance. In the rest of Europe most clinics are still owned and run by vets, so you can expect a lot more heart-to-heart, both in cities and in rural areas with livestock. It's unfortunate that people in the US need to make an effort or just might never get to have this experience.

@@shadowwolfcat13 It happens to a few specific clinics in the UK but that's about it. There is only 1 ''chain'' of vet clinics that I know of and they are linked to a pet store chain, so them having specific plans makes sense. Their care is still decent and affordable though. But as a rule of thumb, the clinics I have been with in the uk/west eu are named after the head vet/owner. Which so far has always worked out for me. Might be a coincidence, but they just happened to be the more specialized clinics (reg pets + exotics and advanced treatment). 6 month check cost is about $20 for me for an exotic, so pretty good. US really is a nightmare for pet care though, just the prices I have seen for spay/neuter in some areas are insane. Also the knowledge on disease etc seems to be lacking with a lot of vets. Misdiagnosis is way too common over there from what I have heard

@shadowwolfcat13 Thank you, that tracks exactly with my experience in recent years. The vets themselves are acting very oddly. I do get the impression of a systemic shakedown of both vets and customers. Vet clinics I used for years are completely different now. Like what Nate was saying about the nearest vet telling him that Aslan has rickets (out of thin air) and trying to sell a treatment plan. Nate seems to think that his local vet is just a lone quack, but as he was relating that, I remember my own experiences . . . Thank you for speaking up so I don't feel like a conspiracy nut! Seems like what is happening to vet clinics now is analogous to what happened to the mortgage industry in the mid 2000s. I can see a collapse of the entire pet care system coming, as no-one will want to be a vet or a customer. The thing is, we have had anti-monopoly laws for about a century but they are never enforced anymore, and no-one of any political side talks about it. They all may be scared too.
@shadowwolfcat13
@shadowwolfcat13 3 ай бұрын
@@JJoy-bk8yr Sad to say, but I believe you're right. There's also the other thing about the US where your education is outrageously expensive. As "insane" as it may sound, the majority of people in European countries, including mine which is considered poor, don't take out loans for university. What does this mean? Well, over here anyone with heart and determination can become a vet AND there is no overabundance of vets, because it's an ever-growing sector, rather, there's a high-demand for them. In the US, however, you might have the mental capacity and/or the heart to be a fantastic vet, but no money to go to uni for it. This means that either you were born wealthy enough to afford it or you get yourself into crippling debt at an age when you should be enjoying the peace of youth. So, as I've seen in multiple reports, US vets suffer from high levels of depression, anxiety and related unfortunate events. They have to remain positive and cheerful when helping your pet while enduring both the financial and emotional pressure that come with the job. That might also help explain some of the situations you've been in. I can't imagine going through all that AND having big companies breathe down my neck.

When I found my 12yr old yorkie passing away actively on a Sunday, if I would have posted that it would have made people very upset if I had told them I wasnt going to take her to the vet. It was a SUNDAY. I live in a rural area where a trip to the emergency vet would have entailed dragging an old man from church to see my dog and a $150 walk-in-the-door-fee for it. And by that time my dog would have passed anyway, because it was just her time. I think people cant handle seeing an animal in pain or sick and the owner saying 'Theres nothing I can do" and people think they can just up in your life and force something onto you by whatever law they want to drudge up. And the cat is fine, she got over the sickness with your help so whats the friggin issue here!? People are actually insane, Im glad you have Az and all those cameras with these crazies out here

For those of you who are unaware. In states that are in the Appalachian mountains like West Virginia, Tennessee, etc. Buildings are spread out over a wide area. It's basically a 30min to 1hour drive to go anywhere. And while there are towns here and there that you can live in, that's not where Nate is living. Judging by where he lives I wouldn't be surprised if the nearest Walmart would be a good 1 hour drive. Let alone a vet. That's why if there is something wrong with your pets, it's often better to wait and carefully monitor your pets since everything is so spread out. Honestly having Katana on stream so he can keep an eye on her is really a great idea. In conclusion, he's doing the best he can with what he's got.
