You'd probably just line the tab up on the edge of the material, then slide the part to line up on the other side and repeat. You still get the support on the top and bottom and a flat surface to reference the final product on.

You can find scrap 1/2 plate a lot of places. Stuff that would be too small for real work would be perfect for this stuff. Just don't expect free stock when you need to do this on a 12" bracket.

"preferable" just use that you do have and as long as its thick enough to take the twisting force and thin enough to fit in the tab space it works. You hold it hammer one side on the line then shift it over and hammer the other.
