Well, it used to be a lot. But poly limits considered "reasonable" have gone up with hardware (though you probably still don't want to push it if you can). Also at least we have LODs. And, it's the terrain- the terrain can have a good chunk of poly budget allocated to it, it's fine.

I'm so relieved to see the developer actually going into deep technical details within the project. I think the best we got from KSP 2 was their dev blogs and block diagrams (I think we all know how well that worked out). They've shown rendering, orbits, terrain streaming, and a solar system. Not only that but they talked about focusing on performance which was only vaguely promised in KSP 2 but completely failed to deliver on. Using multithreaded jolt physics along with their own custom C# based BRUTAL engine gives me alot of hope that this game will have a much higher ceiling over KSP 2 and KSP 1. Larger spacecraft, very large colony bases, deep first class support for multiplayer, hiring reputable modders like Blackrack (amazing volumetric clouds and scatterer). I'll definitely keep my hopes tempered (not repeating KSP 2 again), but I'm very impressed with what they have so far (a solid foundation). A CEO (Dean Hall) that actually seems to understand how the game is built from the ground up and cares about the technical details.

They're planning to make their own, but they're using the real solar system now since it makes some stuff easier (testing physics works, not having to worry about design, etc.)

at first i had some reservations, especially seeing at the beginning of the video, some of my favorite things from ksp are the unique planets, fun writing you can find in the science reports or planet descriptions, and the feeling of controlling your vessel. i really hope those things are kept, there was a small mention of getting artists so i think custom planets will be added but i still wont really hold my breath. getting burned by ksp2 has made me much more discerning for waiting until promises are kept before trusting they will be.

Given how the engine is designed, if it isn't in the vanilla game it won't be hard for modders to add it in. AFAIK from what the devs say in the Discord they are trying to focus on creating a solid vanilla experience that matches and improves on what is already present in KSP 1 as a foundation.

So from a technical point I need clarification, This is using Geo clipmapping terrain on 6 terrains "basically" and you do all the normal cool stuff with shifting Lods and seam correction. This intrigued me cause I was also looking into terrain generation, and I read the, GpuGem on Terrain Rendering Using GPU-Based Geometry Clipmaps. The team talked about having everything multi threaded but I assume this also sits on the gpu. The biggest confusion is the word 'billboard mesh', would this mean you are generating imposter billboard meshes on the fly, cause I only see the clipmapping or maybe billboards is clipmapping? If one of you amazing devs could point this out that would be amazing.

Rocket briefly touched upon this in Discord yesterday, saying that he agrees on KOS's significance and expressing interest in bringing something like it to KSA, but that adding a language within the engine isn't a priority at the moment. The base game is described as basically a truss with a mod-first design, so features like this may very well be possible with community contribution if the dev team never makes it to it.

What I’ve seen so far blew me away, no other words needed. I’m convinced that if this is fully realized and if rocketeeer approaches it with the same dedication as with Stationeers, it’s going to be incredible. I think I can speak for all KSP enthusiasts when I say we can’t wait. I believe there would be plenty of people interested in contributing, which could make development much easier. Maybe even something like a Kickstarter?

If I'm not mistaken the Kraken was the result of trying to do all the simulation in one scene, resulting in floating point errors. If they are using multiple scenes they might be able to circumvent that.

Maybe I want too much and run too far ahead, but still... I hope you will add primitive NPC intelligence, so that bots not under player control could perform a basic set of commands like: stop; follow me; go there; enter/exit the ship. I also hope that you will not forget about the developments of Squad in terms of building/repairing spaceships outside the Vertical Assembly Shop. Well, it would be nice to be able to freely move inside the spaceship. I think this feature would add atmosphere to the gameplay)

I’m a little confused by the lod system. From the wireframe view, it looked like they are using a uv sphere rather than some sphere with more uniform vertex density, which seem suboptimal. I guess it lets them use a sort of spherical clipmap, but I’m not sure.
