Sweden Finally Unveils Its Most Advanced Fighter Jet Yet!

The JAS 39 Gripen has a legacy rooted in the 1980s when it was designed as a multi-role fighter capable of executing a wide range of combat missions. The name J.A.S stands for Interceptor, Attack, and Reconnaissance-reflecting Sweden’s ambitious goal of creating an aircraft that excels in all roles.
Following a major modernization completed in 2020, the upgraded Gripen E took center stage, emerging as a deadlier, more technologically advanced, and highly versatile fighter. One of its most significant enhancements is the AESA Raven ES-05 radar, which can detect targets up to 186 miles away-far surpassing many competitors, including the Eurofighter Typhoon. For perspective, earlier-generation Gripen radars had a range of just 99 miles. It’s like upgrading from an old monocular to a state-of-the-art telescope with night vision.

Ideal for small nations along with SAAB's program of building up the host nations internal infrastructure and technical institutes to support and sustain independently is another winner. The ability to have complete control of the supply chain is impressive in its own right. For me, this links to sovereignty. Although you have mentioned its ability to land on small road and have a small team of maintainers, there is one aspect that is over looked from a holistic sense is the support aircraft that are involved quietly alongside the Gripen. That being, the KC130 Hercules used for air to air refuelling and that too, can land on rough terrain or roads and the small but highly effective SAAB 340 Erieye AEW&C Early Warning aircraft. Much like the Gripen, the Erieye is highly effective and 'nimble' in its role. My last point relates to the sustainment and management on the ground via air traffic and maintenance, What I am referring to is SAAB's DCIS - A communications network for management but equally relates to the Gripen, Erieye and so on. The upgrade from c/d to e/f is massive enough to consider it a new fighter - size, specs, capabilities, etc. If that motivates the headline and illustration to this video, is another story. On the other hand, neither does your comments.

The Norwegian Air Force wanted to replace our F-16 fleet with Gripen instead of jumping on the F-35 bandwagon. It would have been a very sensible option for us. However, our government chose to bow down and cave in to the mighty US military complex and thus opt for the F-35. Needless to say, the F-35 service and maintenance contracts alone are so insanely costly, delivery inertia 15 years behind schedule, and the JSF is not especially suited for operations in our mountainous geography with all of our steep fjords and tricky terrain. The Gripen is perfect for the Nordic theater, but we're sadly not in a position to make our own choices.

@ well its not that they bowed down…the bottom line is fighter aircrafts are slowly moving towards 5th gen stealth fighters so for norwegians to get something like gripen didnt make any sense as they wouldve eventually move onto the 5th gen…and mind you there isnt much diiference between a F-16 or gripen infact F-16 is a proven fighter
