As a Dane, I'd say it's a fantastically underrated Swedish city. Kinda combines some of the best features of Malmö and Stockholm, if you ask me. And then there's the lovely trams of course (oh how I wish Copenhagen, or any Danish city for that matter, had also kept theirs...) In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's my favourite Swedish city, certainly of the bigger ones.

Is it a dangerous city? Can it be compared to Malmo? I was recently thinking about studying in Gothenburg but I’m still not quite sure about safety.
@kristoffer-2614
@kristoffer-2614 2 жыл бұрын
Im three months late so maybe you already know the answer but no its not a dangerous city and i'm pretty sure Malmö is more dangerous than Gothenburg. So, obviously crime does happen in Gothenburg (I mean its a major city, of course crime happens) but you don't need to look over your shoulder and be scared or anything. And when it comes to the crimes that do occur its mostly just pick-pocketing or someone stealing someone else's bike or laptop and stuff like that, you know; pretty harmless stuff. But keep these things in mind: If you find yourself in the shopping centre Nordstan, be extra aware of pick-pocketers. And don't go to the areas of Biskopsgården, Hammarkullen and Bergsjön unless you have to. Other than that, you should be fine... unless you decide to get blackout drunk at a bar and fight someone.
@ssh0ck138
@ssh0ck138 2 жыл бұрын
@@kristoffer-2614 thank you for your reply, fortunately you are not too late. Is Malmo really as dangerous as people tend to portray it? I’ve been offered a place to study on the university there and I don’t know whether it’s a good idea to take an advantage of it. May I ask if you have any information about both university of Gothenburg and Malmo University? I would appreciate any kind of help
@kristoffer-2614
@kristoffer-2614 2 жыл бұрын
@@ssh0ck138 While Malmö does have one of the highest crime and murder rates in the Nordic countries its not too bad compared to other cities in the world. And when it comes to the crime and violence, as far as i know, its mostly between rival gangs so you should be fine. If you have been offered a place at Malmö University than go for it. Just like Gothenburg there are areas of Malmö that should be avoided if possible, Rosengård being one of them, you know the deal; don’t leave your stuff somewhere or someone might steal it, watch out for pick-pocketers and so on. I currently study at Gothenburg University so i might be able to help… what information do you want/need?
@ssh0ck138
@ssh0ck138 2 жыл бұрын
@@kristoffer-2614 well, I’d like to know more about those areas to avoid, I’d actually have some more questions related to living in Sweden. About the uni, do you know by any chance, how many students participate in one programme eg international relations? How big are classes and what methods do they use to teach?
@kristoffer-2614
@kristoffer-2614 2 жыл бұрын
@@ssh0ck138 the Swedish police have a list of ”Vulnerable areas in Sweden”. These areas are no-go zones in all but name. In Gothenburg there are nine of them (Hisings Backa, Rannebergen, Biskopsgården, Bergsjön, Gårdsten, Hammarkullen, Hjällbo, Lövgärdet and Tynnered) Of these three; Biskopsgården, Bergsjön and Hammarkullen are the most well known ones and i think they are also the most dangerous ones, enter at your own risk. The common denominator for these places is that: 1) Its very diverse with people from all over the world. 2) there are a lot of boring, blocky, apartmentbuildings with no character and charm. 3) crime is high. Also; if you need the enter these areas; do it during daytime, i believe its safer that way. Biskopsgården is to the North West of the main Gothenburg city. Bergsjön is to the North East, north of the E20 highway on the outscirts of Gothenburg. Hammarkullen (and neighbouring Angered, another place to avoid because even though its not on the police list of Vulnerable areas its still not a great place to be) is not too far from Bergsjön. Now you roughly know where they are so you can avoid them. When it comes to university i’ve only taken individual courses but they have been between 10-20 students so im guessing the programmes are probably around 30 students, maybe more maybe less. The lessons i’ve had have been two hours long with a 15 minute break, this probably varies depending on the program/course. From what i can tell the programs are mostly around three years long, packed with essays, literature to read through, papers to wright and two hour seminars to listen to. Hope that answered some of your questions! Take care and happy easter! 🐣
