Sweden ended 2020 with a risk-of-poverty rate of 16.1% of the population, thus it has decreased 1 point compared to 2019, in which the risk of poverty was 17.1% of the population.
In total 1,662,000 people were at risk of poverty in Sweden in the last year.
Those who live in households whose income is less than 60% of the median income of their country or territory are considered to be at risk of poverty, that is, whose income is below the so-called “Poverty threshold”.
As we have already seen, the number of people at risk of poverty is not measured against a specific minimum income. People with an income below 60% of the median income of the population are at risk of poverty. That 60% of the median is what we call the poverty line.
In 2020 the poverty threshold in Sweden was € 14,820 per person, then it grew by 136 euros compared to the previous year, which in principle would mean that the income of the population has risen since the previous year, when they were € 14,684 per person. In the case of Sweden, the poverty threshold per household, made up of two adults and two children under 14 years of age, was € 31,122.
