⁠This generation categorization is implying that generation 5 is superior to previous generations which is no the case. Stealth, vertical takeoff and thrust vectoring have their benefits obviously but so has an overall low RCA, passive sensors, EW, networking, ram jet propelled bvr missiles such as Meteor as well as clever cockpit information for offloading the pilot and focus on situational awareness. Add to that robust landing gear, less susceptible to debris being sucked in to air intakes, very fast rearmament/refueling and easy maintenance in the field including new software upgrades, all of it included in Gripen E.

The generation classification is American and have never fitteded well with Swedish jets. Also they change their own classifications when their own jets do not not meet the classification like with the F35 and super cruise

The whole idea that stealth is a necessity for Gen 5 aircraft is nonsense, and one that was invented by and is continually propagated by the US defense industry as a marketing tool. Gen 5 is about sensor technology, networking and avionics, stealth has nothing to do with it.

I understand why its not possible at the moment, but I wish Ukraine could accept some Gripens, together with the rest of the Swedish equipment they got. Like the archer, cv90 and so on. That equipment is meant to work together as a capable military defence and its buildt first and foremost with a specific enemy in mind….everybody knows which one.

Gripen E/F is the cheapest to buy and cheapest to maintain of all Gen 4 airplanes and Gripen E/F is actually a Gen 4.5 airplane.

@@PrepperTankar Well the so called fighter generations is a LM marketing ploy. Since stealth became obsolete a decade ago, then the Gripen E would be a 6th generation fighter.
