@ham62316 жыл бұрын
If you're running an HM-2-like pedal into another distortion like a lot of bands used to do, the gain and volume knobs are actually really useful in helping you find the best kind of sound for it. For example, on Slaughter Of The Soul by At The Gates they used the HM2 as a boost into a Metalzone with the gain at 0 and the volume at full. If you turned up the gain more on the HM2 then it wouldn't necessarily sound bad, but it would be a lot more saturated and that wasn't the sound they were going for.
@ham62316 жыл бұрын
I guess you could say that, but it still has that classic chainsaw-y distortion of the HM-2, it's just turned down a bit in extremeness

The Eyemaster sounds like it’s got more high end, therefore potential black metal tones as well if you just push the treble on the amp a little harder, so i’m in support of the Eyemaster. Although it could just be my tiny wallet speaking as well, who knows. Either way, great video!

Actually the gain on the hm2 is worthless, the sound of the saw comes from the 'high' knob. When you turn it all the way up it gives you the chainsaw sound, but you can get crunch sounds and more with it. Entombed cranked it all up, but the gain itself is pretty weak.

These kinds of videos make me appreciate my hording, I still love it for detuned, Stoner Rock style riffs.
@countk15 жыл бұрын
The Eyemaster seems to be a bit more '"Wolverine blues" ready imho. More harmonics that were initially realised by a totally overdosed 1x12" speaker of a Peavey Combo, stashed away in a box, so the recorded sound got compressed by the mic as well. I have a HM-2 from Korea, which actually sounds better with the distortion just turned on. That on a turned up JCM-800 full stack with GT12-75's and you will need a new pair of pants after playing one chord :-) Sold the 800, which I will regret the rest of my life... Not really an amp for an appartment, lol.... One question: what supply do you use? Most power supplies don't have a balanced 9V output these , so I needed to put a wire from tjhe internal 0V to the earth to get it working again (voltage drop?). I somehow think it altered the whole thing a bit though.

the eyemaster has a noticeably higher formant resonance than your particular hm-2. i suspect that this sort of resonant frequency variance is probably present in different hm-2s as well, so itd be nice if tc electronic had put a third knob on top to let you adjust the frequency of the filters together to better match with whichever hm-2 the player wants to emulate at the time.

I think another face-off that needs to be done is the HM-2 vs. the DOD FX-56, since their circuits are almost identical. However, the DOD has the bass knob permanently set at 100%, which I've found makes the pedal perfect for use as a disgustingly over-the-top bass fuzz.

All I want is for the Eyemaster to sound exactly the same as the HM-2, which it doesn't. If they'd only put a tone knob on it so you could roll back the high end just a little bit, it would be there. As it stands, the Behringer HM300, with the high tone knob rolled off slightly (everything else dimed), gets much closer. Unfortunately it's made out of butterfly wings and will endure maybe 4 stomps.

they sound slightly different, with the Eyemaster being a bit more trebbly in timbre and actually a slight bit less muddy... I am assuming the Eyemaster is basically a clone of the HM-2 with the high and low knob simply hardwired to be dimed (and, let's be real, that is basically the only setting most people would use anyway) and the difference in sound could either be a deliberate variation to make it a bit more modern while keeping the general nastiness... or it is just the tolerances being on opposite ends of the spectrum between that specific HM-2 and that specific Eyemaster. In all honesty, I think I actually liked the Eyemaster a little more... Both are probably a nightmare to mix well regardless, and considering what frankly absurd amounts you can pay for a barely functioning HM-2 nowadays, I'd likely get the Eyemaster instead... in fact, actually honestly considering to get one right now . . .

Sadly all knobs are on max.The Eyemaster is brighter and I can't dial it back. A little bit too bright for my taste. So an EQ would have to do the job. The perfect pedal lives in between those two.

Nice comparison! I think they would work very well together as the Behringer HM300 does with the HM-2. One has to have the "chainsaw mood" to compose for HM-2. You could make a video showing how to get this sound using amp sims.

My rig in those days was my H||H IC100S solid state head, an old Marshall 4 X 12, my Boss HM2 and my John Birch SG. Phil Campbell (Motorhead) asked me at one gig, 'How do you get that sound?'. That did make me smile a bit. Eyemaster sounds epic rigged through Boss EQ pedal. Another alternative to the HM2, for me anyway, is the Grunge Pedal through Boss EQ aswell. Gives a really dirty sound but at the end of the day, it also depends on the set up you have, what guitar (pick ups) you use, which leads, which amps/heads etc. Listening to KZbin videos never does any pedal any justice unless you listen to them live, in room. Oh, that also make a difference aswell; the setting you're in - small room, large room, hall, outdoors etc. Anyway 🤘🏻

Just great! I spit my coffee all over the table ! I can t stop laughing since the moment you stepped on the pedal. Thats going to be a hard day out there with that ''tone'' still in my ears. Thanks Colin ,i really Love your videos.

Eyel master is a great contender. Considering the HM-2 is hard to come by and expensive i would say go with T.C. Electronics. You can adjustments pre and post effects that can get a near perfect match to HM-2. Although it would be nice to say " Yeah i own a original HM-2, WHAT!!!"

I have an eyemaster but I have to buy a new amp,can I put it on a boss Katana 50?Thanks for the answer and sorry for my english cause I’m italian.

I'm gonna buy the eyemaster cuz' i think it's easier to work with in a live setting, hoping i could make the "blended" chainsaw tone live so the notes would stay defined but the tone would still be brutal, i think if i deal most of the gain on the amp instead of the pedal but give it the tone of the pedal i would have an "easier to understand" chainsaw tone.

I love the hm2.....I picked up the behringer hm300 clone...and tbh...it’s dam close...it’s funny at practice with my band Bodach when I bring it and blast out entombed or dismember ....you see the death metal faithful smile like rabid animals at the knarlyness of the sound...I know it sounds horrible....and it’s just nasty.....but there is something about the sound I just love....thanks Colin....

The eyemaster seemed adequate for riffs, especially higher ones, but way to much high frequency for chords ringing out or low riffs

Eyemaster has more of a fizzy top end to it, I imagine it would cut better in the mix; But HM-2 is more tweakable.

I'm not even metal player, but I want one of these. I reckon it'd be good for post-rock style noise.

Both sound great...HM-2 had a touch more chugga-chugga
