Your master closet is the size of some tiny houses! 😂😂 By the way, thanks for being real. Exhausted, frustrated, no makeup, just…real. Donating to a Women’s Shelter would be awesome. One of those saved me when I was only 21. Also, if you have cosmetics you never opened, they take that as well. Some men don’t let their wives wear cosmetics, and makeup is such a treasure for some women who weren’t allowed to even have so much as lip gloss.

I’ve been decluttering for 3+ years. It just gets better and better. More peaceful, so easy to clean and care for. Minimalism for me is just having the things that serve me well. And no one walks into my home and says where is all of your stuff. They say, your house looks so great.

I started this process after clearing out my moms apartment when we moved her to long term care. I didn’t want my kids having to go through the same thing with our house where I have so much more than my mom did. I don’t want to store stuff I don’t use. This was a good reminder to keep going!

Yes, I helped clean out my Dad's house and emptying out 60 years of stuff was work! While his stuff was organized another family member who died left a daughter an absolute mess of things that should've been thrown out decades ago: I'm determined not to leave that kind of mess for anyone to deal with. Every other year I go though this process and what makes it a positive experience is knowing I'm keeping up with it and my family won't have to deal with it. What will be a challenge will be getting rid of 2 boxes of papers and move them to digital site!

My parents every year had a pre-funeral give away. My sibs and I would come over for a cookout potluck. After dinner we would draw numbers from a bowl and could take from the pile when your number was Called. Ayer my dad died and mom went to independent living, it took two weekends to unload the house. I just spent two days Swedish death cleaning my primary closet, linen closet, under bed storage, nightstand, coat closet and second closet and now that it’s done I feel tired but amazing. Like you mentioned there is no big before and after difference, but I have 6 trash bags to donate, a couple of bags of trash, and about 20 items to sell. I too came across shoelaces, paperclips and foreign coins, and so many items stashed away. Now all that stuff is gone and I have space in my closet to breathe. One thing I learned is that so many items of clothing were bought in the hopes I would look like someone else, and I now realize I need to find my own style and look like the best version of me. Thanks for your very honest inspiration and humor.

(Jane) The "random shit" comment made me laugh out loud because I know EXACTLY what you meant. I have been on an extended quest to de-clutter, simplify and let go of things that don't bring me joy anymore. Some things that have helped me along the way are: 1. I have a designated spot where I put things that I THINK I want to part with but I can't pull the trigger. Then I periodically go back to them and my response is almost always immediately one of two ways. Either it's "gasp" I love that and want to use it again or, more often, "I forgot I even had that" It's time to go. 2. I have learned to give myself permission to get rid of things that for many years I enjoyed but I don't anymore and maybe someone else will. 3. I forgive myself for my buying mistakes. Keeping something I don't like/use just because I feel guilty about buying it (even inexpensive things) does not make it worthy to keep. It just prolongs the guilt. Thank you for being so open and getting this conversation started!
@elizzy87542 ай бұрын
I too identified 💯 with the "random shit" remark! I like your 3 categories. So far I'm good at 1 and 2 but must do better at 3. I'm now on to home filing and archives. One of my neighbours is going through the same process and we decided to share the purchase and use of a document shredder. Getting there. I am making tiny inroads into the garage but will I be able to get my DH (on the Alzheimer's journey) to part with any of his huge tool collection, I don't know.? Thank you for sharing your insights.

They helped me get rid of two old ceramic toilets, which I had already placed by my driveway. They came and loaded them and handed me a $240 bill! I had bought them brand new for $80 each at Home Depot! Had I known the cost was so steep, I would have let those old toilets sit in my backyard as flower pots.

Hi Jen, thank you for this video and being so real! Both of my grandmothers and also my mom who passed in 2019 were “collectors” of pretty little things. In fact, one grandmother would say “there’s a garage sale! Let’s go see what I can’t live without” 😂 Both my daughters tell me they appreciate some of these things, but they don’t want them. So I finally curated - well, mostly - what I want to keep into a small china cabinet - also given to me by one of those grandmothers. So now my granddaughter loves to play with them. They might as well get some use!

It's funny how certain videos pop up just when you need to see them. I've been really working on decluttering (not very successfully) lately and this video really has me motivated to get it in gear. My favorite aunt and uncle both passed away recently and it made me realize that I would much rather have memories than stuff. They went on vacation with us every summer and I have tons of great memories of those trips with them and my cousins and I cherish them all. After I watched one video of yours, I went in my bedroom and cleared out one drawer of my dresser. I would have done another but I had to get dinner going, so I'm jumping back in after this video. When I went through that first drawer I looked at al of it and made quick decisions on if I would wear it now or not and a TON went into a bag to be taken out. I have a lot more work to do, but your videos are motivating me in the best way..:)

Its all getting used at last, keeping it in cute little sets just doesn't work. I also went through my make-up and had a declutter...and I'm doing a second declutter on my clothes (I did one a few yrs ago, got rid of heaps that I never wore and bough stuff I did, now I've retired, and its time to have some changes again!!) About your travel bag, I learned that many children in foster care, which is often a temporary arrangement, carry their clothes/possessions from one home to the next in trash or grocery bags. They could really use a wheelie or other small/medium sized luggage. Also they have very few durable or school appropriate clothes. Perhaps you could inquire with your city's child protection office for their wards' needs.

All the yesses! I just went through this process last month, and it took me about a week as well. I knew it needed done, and just kept putting it off. Finally on a Sunday evening at 6:00, I got a wild hair and took every single thing out of my closet and piled it in my bedroom. (I work a 40 hour week, mind you, and had to be up at 5:30 the next morning.) My husband thought I had lost my mind. 😅 I ended up working 4 hours that first night and made a ton of progress. It was nice to completely empty the space, give it a deep clean, then only put things back that I truly wanted, and in an organized fashion. I donated a LOT, sold some things locally, and some things went straight to the trash/recycle bin. You’re right. It feels so good walking in and knowing what I have are things that I really want, the clothes all fit, the items are all useable, and I no longer have to sift through things to find what I’m looking for. About a week later, I found my husband going through the same process for his closet. Mine completely inspired him…I didn’t even have to say a word! I have vowed to stay mindful of what goes in because I never want to have to do that again!! Totally worth it though. Thanks for making this video. ❤

Your video is very relatable. Thank you. It's nice to know that there are many, many other people in the same situations. In my case, "It's out of sight but not out of mind!". I, too, have travel items, etc., in bins or bags. Although I am very organized, I get overwhelmed and exhausted for lack of time, energy, and busy schedules. Once I get things in their place, I take photos, stand back, and admire my work. It creates peace in my mind. I keep a daily to-do list by priority and geographic travel on errands, and rearrange it, as needed. After our Mom died six years ago (at nearly 90 years old), 😢 it took our family a very long time to sort and separate items and keepsakes in our childhood home (built by our Dad and his father and brothers/brothers-in-law) before we put it up for sale. Mom was organized, too, and a collector of things. Grieving and going thru the process created tears, anger, and laughter, along with many memories. We pulled together and accomplished it. I did take many photos of the process before and after, as well as photos of items we were donating, selling, or discarding. I don't want my family to have to go thru the same detailed process when either I am unable to do it myself or after I die. This morning was a high-energy day for me. Therefore, I began by walking and caring for our dog, eating breakfast, sorting and reorganizing items under the kitchen sink, prepared a full-course meal (head start), and started on other household chores. I'll need a nap this afternoon. 😊 I look forward to your future videos. Cathy

My parents grew up during the depression and were basically hoarding antiques. I have a slew of siblings. Double digits. Only one has helped and only twice. I am emotionally and physically exhausted and very depressed. A challenge I face is they lived rurally. We had an estate sale and made a pittance. Their lovely antiques selling for a small percentage of their worth. I feel like a failure now at everything. And because there was so much the house is still full and I have no idea what to do with all those contents. We have already filled 4 dumpsters. And when I think of my own home do we just donate and throw away all these things? I feel like a spinning top and it is making me sick. What do I do with all this stuff?

I am so sorry for your loss and for the magnitude of the burden that you are carrying alone. Caring Transitions is a franchise company that specializes in decluttering and disposing of belongings, for estates and those trying to declutter their homes before putting them up for sale. The franchisor sponsors online auctions of things that collectors and antique shops want to buy. There are one or two other companies that do the same thing. They earn a percentage of what they get for you.

Your honesty is EVERYTHING. I heard you drop the swears and thought ohhhhh you're like legiiiiiit doing this, not just for the KZbins!! Love all of this and gosh, it's so inspiring to do this in my current season and not put it off. I've never been a minimalist, but this could definitely help me be more mindful about what I choose to bring into my life.

I love this video and the concepts you’ve shared. So many you tubers are doing minimalism videos and I applaud them for pairing down to one pan and one purse, but I think you’ve captured the essence here - what we keep is different for everyone. But what we keep must be useful and having meaning for us - if not, let it go! You’re the best Jenn!

Thank you so much, Anna!! Yes minimalism would feel very austere and not me.

I know you are my twin. The way you expressed this process and do the work, is like me. But its a necessary job. We put ourselves thru it, we have to do the work to get ourselves out of it. Yes, see it thru. You can do it. I did.

Foster Care! Suitcases and totes may be used by local foster care organizations! These kids are often relocated with their things dumped into a garbage bag. Something in good condition would be such a blessing!

Very interesting video, Jen. Yes, I lived in Atlanta, and know all about the heat. Watching your dog joining in while you were sorting, and asking for kisses just melted my heart. As always, such original, helpful information. My home is ready should I die. So my adult child has zero to worry about👍

13:10 The way you define the goal of Swedish Death Cleaning, to me it is a word by word definition of minimalism too. It is about getting rid of burdening stuff and keeping/getting stuff that makes you happy. Maybe you have only met depictions of extreme and strict minimalism. I consider myself a (normal, moderate) minimalist and I love and resonate with your Swedish Death Cleaning videos, just as I like videos about minimalism. :)

I have been going through personal experience with the death of my mother-in-law and my father within a month of each other. My father, who lived with us, didn't own property, a car, and very little personal things. Basically, my parents extremed downsized when moving in with us. My MIL is a totally different story. Her house is filled with collections from her things to HER parents things. Everything is split between my husband and his brother per her will. The money and investments are clear and easy. Dealing with the contents of the house has become an emotional nightmare! I can not believe the arguments over "STUFF". I am now firm believer of getting your house in order and to have the knowledge that other people probably won't want 95% of our beloved belongings.

First, I love you ❤ Seriously, the authenticity and shared experience is what were all here for 👏 We helped an extended side of our family go through the final possessions of a family member who passed this year, so I've recently experienced that. Also, I spent many childhood years in a home where we routinely bought things we needed because there was so much stuff (never organized) that we knew we wouldn't find something missing. The adults were the worst offenders, not the kids. The peace I want when it comes to possessions is to truly know what is in a space as you described at the end. I can't wait to see the rest of this journey!

After both of my parents were gone, it was incredibly difficult for me to " get rid of" things of theirs that meant something to them, even if the item did not mean the same to me. Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of my control, I had to make difficult and permanent decisions very quickly, and I still regret some of the decisions that I had to rush through. I hope that I will not leave my daughter in the same situation.

Loved your video!!! I felt the same way! I went through this process awhile back…..and to kinda keep it going on to really hone on things that I use and love (that I think I might love it, but not sure) I turned all the hangars backwards and when I do wear a piece, it goes back in the closet on the hangar forward on the rod. It’s been about 3 weeks, and it’s illuminating on how little I truly wear and love! If after 6 months I haven’t worn it and it’s not seasonal, in the donation pile it goes! Also a great exercise- I’m already learning more about myself and use of my things! Of course, I adjust the timeframe to one season for seasonal items…

I’ve moved multiple times and try to do the cleaning out with each move. It is the stuff with memories attached that is the hardest. I also miss some of the things I’ve donated so thank you for saying that! Also rolling suitcases are perfect for moving books or other very heavy objects. I packed my daughter’s iron cookware in one rolling bag and it was great to roll into the truck and then out into the new kitchen. Thanks for being so real!
