(american) football is NOT a contact sport. it's an *_IMPACT_* sport. 😉 i played football from age 6 to 25 ("Pop Warner" leagues up to semi-pro). i am a big feller, and i was 6'3" and about 310lbs in my prime. and since nature built me for power but not speed, i was typically on the line (aka "The Pit", mostly defensive line) and functioning as the team's "executioner". this means that when my coach wanted a player from the other team to be removed from the game, it was my job to make it happen. and if i could do it without getting caught by the referees/judges, so much the better. i'm a grandfather now, and an old man, so the wear and tear on the body from both work and play are catching up to me with a raging vengeance. while i sustained more than a just few injuries, i have great memories of playing the game, and reckon i dealt out more injuries than i took. so for me, that's a win.

I think this is why soccer/football hasn't really taken off in the US. It's so skillful, and impressive on so many levels, but when they fall down acting like they were assaulted when there was a tiny bit of contact I just immediately get annoyed at the entire game. Power is everything in football - so many of these guys are massively powerful, benching over 500, squatting 700 plus. The NFL takes weightlifting seriously. Each year in April, the NFL holds what's called a 'combine' for college grads hoping to get drafted into the NFL. It's speed and power testing. One of the benchmarks is how many reps you can bench 225 pounds. The record is something like 51 times, and that's just college boys.

@@ItsMatthewReacts having played offensive line growing up, I like to watch where the tv camera does not focus. The O and D lineman beating the crap out of each other, the constant push-and-shove, two against one, knocking each other down and then sometimes doing a belly flop on the other fallen player while he is lying on the ground. You don't have to be carrying the ball to get tackled. That is just a block to let your player get ahead. Only 2 snaps hold the helmet on. That's why the helmets come off so easily. Some players only use 1 snap to make it easier for their helmet to come off so they don't get more injured.

And in reality if these guys can get away with it they use as few pads as possible. In college there really aren't any rules about pads so some of the lighter guys wear nothing but shoulder pads and that's really it. They even cut the pants off now above the knee a lot in college and there is no protection below that point at all anywhere. It's kind of weird in a way that never have any football players worn shin pads. In the NFL there are more rules and they are required to wear more padding for example on the thigh and hip but the players will often still try and get away with less.

Charles Frederick Hughes (March 2, 1943 - October 24, 1971) was an American football player, a wide receiver in the National Football League from 1967 to 1971. He is, to date, the only NFL player to die on the field during a game.

Ar least 9 players have died shortly after a game, or practice in the NFL. Between 1900 and 1905, 45 players died. Between 1931 and 2018, 108 deaths have occurred in highschool and college football. Since 2005, 110 football players have died from CTE, i think those should be recognized as football deaths. Since no one new what CTE was prior to 2005, i think its safe to say American football has killed a lot of men

Wish the actual sounds were on. Hearing these huge hits are scary. The crack of the pads and the grunt as the air leaves their lungs. I dreaded getting hit hard at practice than in a game. Nearly every player, offense or defense, lives for one chance to get a big clean hit. Sometimes they guy on defense would be lining up a big hit on a ball carrier but instead gets run over. Some running backs make opponents pay for trying to hit & tackle them. Yes, happened me more than once and rang my bell both times.😅

7:00 helmets pop off for 2 reasons 1: a hit in the facemask hard enough to push the facemask into the face, also rotates the helmet up 2: a hit to the shoulder pads that pushes them up into the helmet. In both cases, the helmet staying on would be far worse than it coming off.

There was a receiver who played for years and years on the San Diego Chargers nicknamed "Bambi" (Lance Alworth, Hall of Fame, 11 years in the NFL) for the springy baby deer of the same name. In 2017, Boston University conducted an evaluation of deceased NFL players. 99% of them had CTE, short for chronic traumatic encephalopathy which is a degenerative brain condition caused by repeated blows to the head and brain trauma. Symptoms of CTE includes memory loss, confusion, impaired judgement, aggression, and even progressive dementia. Reasons like this is why you don't see very hard hits like these much anymore as rules changed as the health and safety of NFL players became top priority for the NFL and NFLPA. Certain helmets have been banned which were deemed unsafe by the NFLPA for players to use in their laboratory testings as they weren't adequate enough to protect from helmet to helmet hits.

Part of the reason why it’s important to have a smart quarterback that can read the defense before the play starts based on how the defense is lined up. I'm from the Phila. area. In the 1970's we would play neighborhood football. No pads, full tackle. Rain or snow. I'm pretty big and there was this kid skinny, fast, talking shit like I won't catch him. That's cool. I told him that there would be one time and when I caught him, I'd blow him up. One play he dropped behind the line for a swing pass. I dropped back off the line into coverage. He catches the ball and then I crushed him. He folded in half and went knees first in the mud. I stood over him and said "now talk some shit". I watch a fair amount of Soccer/Football and guys get touched and they roll around like they were shot. I'm not downplaying the game. I played it too and there is a shit ton of running but I don't remember doing that baby ass shit like they do today. I will say that everything has changed. It's not the 1960's and 1970's anymore. We had a guy who played for the Phila. Eagles, Concrete Charlie or Chuck Bednarik. He destroyed Frank Gifford. There is video of Concrete Charlie. Just think if most of these happened back in the 1940s they would all be dead. Back then they wore leather padding.

2:45 kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJPQXoGed5mYa7c he gets up. He's okay. I don't remember if they let him back in the game though. I wouldn't want to play after that. I would walk my happy ass to the showers immediately and call it a night.

3:48 this comment really encapsulates why some americans consider soccer/football to be a complete joke. the "floppers" are just shameful.

Here's another, talks about Larry Allen, the combine and all. Larry's run-down of a linebacker at the end of the video is fabulous. The announcer's couldn't give a crap about the guy who intercepted the pass and was on his way to a TD. They were just all over what Larry did. I think you'll like it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJfQhJ-ki9KFmdk

Not sure if you're interested, but there are videos about big Larry Allen, who holds the NFL bench record at like 700 lbs. This is a pretty good one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jImQhnygZrB7jNk

NFL player gets smashed to the ground by a 230 pound muscled man running at full speed and gets right up and goes back to the huddle. Premier League player gets mildly kicked in the calf from behind and rolls on the ground for a minute and looks to the ref for a yellow card.
