Well the dude speaks Scanian, which is a very particular dialect and quite different from Standard Swedish, so this isn't very informative to people who have never heard Swedish or Norwegian before. Standard Swedish is way more similar still to the Norwegian that the girl is speaking.

Agreed, heck I remember a couple of years ago SVT or TV4 subtitled Skånska for the rest of the Swedish audience. The guy talking English on the other hand had a more standard Swedish dialect (riksvenska).

+Kamboh 1991 +saturnineXTS that's because the danish, swedish and norwegian languages are more like different dialects of a same language, seperated into three different languages due to politics. Actually it's more like a continuum of dialects. For instance: someone who speaks a certain norwegian dualect, will understand a swede better than another norwegian who speaks a different dialect, even when they simply never heard eachother's dialect before. Also, swedish and danish have a standardised language while in norwegian there's simply no such thing as a 'formal, standard language', everybody just speaks a dialect, even tv channels and politicians.
@SaturnineXTS
@SaturnineXTS 8 жыл бұрын
Actually I wouldn't say Ru/Be/Ukr are anything as similar to each other as Swe/No/Dk are. You can understand them, sure, but so can Poles, especially with Belarusian. The Slavic languages could be treated as a dialect continuum all the same, but the differences are somewhat bigger than with the three Scandinavian languages (though still not as big as between certain dialects of German. go figure)

***** Well you're right about that there are some similarities, cause the languages are actually in the same language group. But except for that, they are completely different. It's a common mistake..many people think that german and swedish sound the same , and has a similar vocabulary, but they don't.
@Dovenpeis
@Dovenpeis 7 жыл бұрын
Both German and Swedish, like English, belong to the Germanic language group. So naturally there are many similarities. And yes, phonetically Danish is the one closest to German. The Danes do not sing, like Norwegians and Swedes. As for Germans and Dutch, I do not know enough to say anything educated about it, but as I understand a German and a Dutch can understand a lot of what the other is saying and/or writing from the get go.

Just spent 6 months in Norway, and I was really surprised about the similarities of the 3 scandinavian languages (sorry Icelandic), like... reading swedish or danish is quite ok for me, and even speaking with Swedes ! It's really almost the same, which is uncommon for a french man, considering that even spanish and italian is far from being that similar to french (altough we can read it pretty much). Although, I dunno why, I think Norwegian sounds a bit better !

I liked this one. I think your Norwegian friend did a pretty convincing Skånska if I do say so myself. I would love more videos highlighting the subtle similarities/differences in Scandinavian languages. oh, and if you are taking suggestions for video topics, I would like one about bicycle infrastructure (bike path, bike parking, bike traffic signal, bicycle underpass) just to see your take on this as you are from a region where biking is an everyday mode of transport. Or if that is too specific a topic, maybe you can explain in the comments your opinion the difference between a cykelvag and a cykelbana? They seem interchangeable to me.

These are not fun as we are so similar and close genetically, linguistically and culturally being Scandinavian/Germanic and we all grow up being fluent by default in each other’s languages. I was never taught neither Danish or Swedish, but due to the exposure through media, music and TV shows/movies, I understand. Norwegian is closer to Swedish, and the majority of us has Swedes in our family, my aunt and my 3rd cousin’s husband is a Swede as well. Written wise, we’re basically Danish, but Norwegianified. Norway was also under both Swedish and Danish rule. We have over 100, if not thousands of dialects, and some was influenced by German/Dutch, and others Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Russian.

I think “dødelig” and “dödligt” have the same origin as the world “deadly”. All three kind of sound alike and the Nordic words have similar meaning to “deadly” in this context

Interesting video. I noticed some similarities there. Similar diference between Ukrainian and Belarusian (84% of common lexicology). According to the official data, Ukrainian is more similar to Belarusian, Polish (70% of common lexicology), Slovakian (68%). Ukrainian and russian languages have 62% of common lexicology, it's less, but not strange. Because Ukrainian and Belarusian languages came from East Slavic, but the russian did not. The russian is more similar to Bulgarian (73-74% of common lexicology).

Swedish has lots of dialects as well. It is everything from the islands that once were Danish, Åland, Gotland, Skåne, Dalarna, Stockholm, Lappland and all along the Norwegian border (influenced by Norwegian) + more. Norwegian has 8-10 main dialect areas. Danish also has more dialect areas than you would think. At least Denmark had. They're now dying because they're so different from the most productive dialect which is the Copenhagen dialect. The most interesting thing about Danish dialects is the infamous "artikkel-grænsen" on Jutland which is where you find the frontier for the continental and British prefixed definite article. das Haus and the house. In South West Jutish they say/said 'a hus'. The same prefixed definite article as in continental European and British. In Scandinavian it is postfixed definite article 'huset'. 'Det bor en familje i a hus.'

Had a coworker from Denmark and she told me that the Scandinavian languages are mutually intelligible if the people speak slowly and don't use a lot of slang.

Yes, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are very similar, however Swedes and Norwegians often find it hard to understand spoken Danish. =P I would say that Swedish and Norwegian are more similar in speech, whereas Norwegian and Danish are more similar in writing. However, Finnish is NOT similar at all to any of those languages, since it belongs to a completely different language family. Sweden and Finland have a close social relation to each other, and a lot of Finnish people understand some Swedish since they have Swedish as a school subject because Finland used to be a part of Sweden, but other than that those languages are completely different.
