Quast said he nearly shat himself the first time Terfel began singing behind him during the first rehearsals because he wasn't prepared for the volume of his voice lol.

Terfel has the most beautiful tone of any Todd; there's no strain in any note. But he's also one of the best acting singers ever. There's real menace throughout. Bravo!!

Just gotta say the direction here is impeccable. The long pause of Sweeney whistling before “now then my friends” is chilling. It also just makes the material feel so fresh, not overdone/cliche as some Sweeney productions have been.

Might not be the best fit for two bass-baritones who are hovering around 60 years old, but both marvelous performers nonetheless.

One of the great tragedies of Broadway is that Philip Quast has yet to play the Phantom - the Phantom's age is pretty obscure, so if he's still up for it, I'd be one who'd happily buy a ticket!

Did Terfel miss a line in the beginning? Seemed like the other actor was waiting to come in, but it’s hard to tell.
@salvinuenthusiast10 ай бұрын
He did - after "a stylish trimming of the hair?" he's supposed to say "a soothing skin massage?" before Turpin begins singing to fill in the instrumental before the singing bit - Terfel probably either just forgot his line, couldn't fit it with the delivery he wanted, or maybe the director just didn't like the way he said it - interesting omission though

I gotta be honest, I don't think Bryn is a good fit for this kind of role. His voice really can't hit the high notes with any sense of restraint or subtlety and it just sounds strained and blunt. When he sings in the middle range softly, he sounds great, but as soon as a high note comes in, he sounds like an airhorn without any control Especially when he's being paired against non-operatic singers, his lack of flexibility becomes really obvious.
