Sweeney Todd, the musical, opened on Broadway in 1979. It starred Len Cariou as Sweeney Todd and Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. You can find a couple of filmed performances on Broadway with the original cast. This one that you reacted to is the first film adaptation directed by Tim Burton, real life husband of Helena Bonham Carter [Mrs. Lovett]. Thanks for another great reaction.

I love how many Harry Potter actors are in this musical: Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin (Snape of course), Helena Bonham-Carter as Mrs. Lovett (Bellatrix Lestrange), Timothy Spall as Beadle (Wormtail), and Jamie Campbell-Bower as Anthony (young Grindelwald). Also, interesting fact: because the colors were so muted for most of the movie, the blood they used was actually like bright orange so it would appear red on the film.

It’s a wonderful musical because Sondheim is a brilliant composer. My favorite version is a somewhat hard to find DVD of a live production done for public broadcasting. It’s the full musical version from the stage production and it’s got Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. Highly recommended.

Yes! And I saw that production, only with Len Cariou instead of George Hearn. The whole thing was on KZbin but the only complete one I can find now is a bootleg of a live performance. Poor quality, but a record nonetheless. There's music included in the original that is omitted here, and I can't help but feel let down by what I feel is a lack of energy in "A Little Priest", but Sondheim himself said he was satisfied with this version.

I love how they showed the personality of Toby, in the play it is more noticeable that Toby is actually Special Needs, which is why he is so trusting and so loving. The part when he sings, " I may not be smart but I ain't dumb", just shows how much he does actually understand.

The movie actually changed the character of Toby significantly, casting him as an actual child, but then removing almost everything that made you feel sympathy for him in the play. Compared to the play's simple, vulnerable Toby, the movie's version is tough as nails.

Loved your reaction. This is a roller coaster of a film, with dark humour, lost love, sadness and good old fashioned gore rolled into one package. The musical was written by Stephen Sondheim who, amongst other things, wrote the lyrics for West Side Story. It was based on a popular melodrama of the 1840s. Some people say it was based on a true story, but there’s no evidence for this. For all the stories of how prim and proper people were in Victorian England, there was quite an appetite for shocking stories and violent drama.

I'm so excited that you loved this movie so much! It is based on the stage play the starred Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett, and written by the late great Stephen Sondheim. I loved "Not While I'm Around" (the song with Toby and Mrs. Lovett) so much that I composed an arrangement for it for my men's chorus many years ago. There was a bit of controversy in the casting of Depp as Sweeney since the part originally called for an operatic voice, so many Sondheim purists despise this movie, and I have to admit it took some time and repeated viewings to grow on me. However, I think it's very well directed and acted, and has a dark fantasy bite which keeps it from getting TOO serious, so despite some quibbles about changes made from the stage show (like eliminating all the chorus parts) I still think it's an entertaining film. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I am far from a Sondheim purist and love this movie, but was disappointed that Tim Burton cut out the rapturous “Kiss Me” duet between Anthony and Johanna (my favorite song in the musical) as well as most of the jokes between Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett. I believe the rationale was that they would relieve the darkness, which Burton really wanted to emphasize. I understand where he was coming from but still feel that much was lost when he left out those elements.

I really enjoy your videos. I saw this on Broadway after it opened. Mrs. Lovett was played by the late, great Angela Lansbury (Bedknobs & Broomsticks, Murder She Wrote). It is one of Stephen Sondheim's masterpieces It ran for several years and swept the Tony Awards. Remarkable piece of musical theater. Tim Burton did a great job with this film adaptation. The only difference on stage is the violence is not graphic, there is a chorus who narrates the story which makes it a powerful morality play but a chorus wouldn't have worked on film, and the boy is caught by the police when they storm in when Joanna goes to fetch them, and he is taken in. I like this ending in the film much better! Hauntingly beautiful film.

I remember how much of this musical centered around body fluids - sweat, piss, bile, and, of course, buckets and buckets of blood. It's a terrific film, but the stage production was so much better.
