These vintage unmarked axes are usually made by the large companies like Kelly and True Temper and left unmarked and sold to hardware stores where the store's paper labels are put on them.

Good ole Plumb . Hammer forged on progressive dies and differentially tempered 1085 . Would be fun to do a Rockwell and acid test on that axe . Thanks

I have a couple heads with those divets in them aswell. Never realized it was an anvil mark someone told me once it was a temper check? Or temper mark. I also have a couple with an X pressed into them.
@Mindokwin2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. It could also be from a clamp when the axe head is ground and sharpened after forging. It is in the softer steel part of the axe. I have others with a C and a round dent right in the center on one side.

What type of garage sales should i look at for finds like this
@Mindokwin8 жыл бұрын
In places with a history of logging. Rural areas are best. Plus you need luck and persistence. I hit a lot of garage sales before I find a gem or two.
@zechariahhall26208 жыл бұрын
Which is better Flea markets or Garage sales and i live in a rural area blairsville georgia population of barely 1k and as a kid i don't exactly have acces to drive a car
@Mindokwin8 жыл бұрын
You should look at both. I find more at flea markets but the prices are usually higher than garage sales. Maybe you could get somebody take you around on a Saturday and look at a lot of sales. Good luck.

American made but unmarked. Just how would you determine the origin of an unmarked axe head? And, why is that important.
@Mindokwin8 жыл бұрын
Just by the shape. That dent is also a characteristic of earlier twentieth century American axes. The only importance is then you know it is probably a good axe with good steel.
