They can be. They go for as low as $150 for previous owner surrender's at the chinchilla breeder we got our boy from, although some of the more "show quality" chins can go for over $1000 easily like someone else mentioned. Ours was $300 but with chins, most of your cost is a one time thing for them and the critter nation cage (food/hay/chew toys are MUCH cheaper than supplies needed for a cat or dog)
