That little arpeggiated part with the slide up was the catalyst for getting the whole song started. Gary was playing that and Ed came in a “bounced” the main lick off it. Brilliant.

The more I listen to Skynyrd, the more things I discover. One thing though .... there is a KZbin video with Ed King and Marty Schwartz where Ed demonstrates how he plays that main opening lick. The D, C, G lick. After the G chord the first note of that knucklebuster he plays is actually a B flat to a B and not an open A to a B. After I saw this and started playing it that way, it made all the difference. I can't remember if he said the original recording was an A note, but nevertheless, Ed stated he always played that B flat. That's classic Ed King stuff right there. Ed was a genius.

You listen go to Lynyrd Skynyrd live back when Ed King was still in the band or any other line up including today, they don't play that song exactly like the recording, including most of their other songs, but it always sounds great when you have three great guitarists bouncing around the basic structure of the song,

I always had a question in my mind that it may be the Bb. I guess I should have gone back and listened closer, but I didn't think it was a big deal. l mean, how many other correct notes am I showing? One out of a hundred is not a big deal. Also I figured most people knew sometimes it rolls up the a to B flat to b or B flat to B. I really thought it was a minor detail. I guess I shouldn't assume that, as some people think that such a small part of such a common lick like that is a big deal.

@@LEADSOLO Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love your videos and I am what I'd consider an intermediate player only. I find your videos to be extremely accurate, right down to the tone. It was just something I stumbled across one day and I thought it was worth mentioning for those die hard fans of "all that is Ed King".

That was awesome! Never saw anybody show those other parts. That’s why Skynyrd is great. They layered all of these cool little parts together. I believe I saw a video with Gary Rossington explaining that melody you showed on the high E snd B string was originally what he came up with and the song was created from that. Very cool lesson! Thanks

I’m sitting here so itching to learn these licks. I got a nasty cut down my right ring finger at the moment, and today just had a wake up moment on how good this song actually is. Playing anything is absolute pain right now haha.

I had the opportunity to see Ed King in ,87 in Shreveport Louisiana he played a tele hadn't switched to the Paul Reed Smith guitar s may have but that night he was the most special guitarist nothing against Gary I mean his solos ain't easy either but on Working for MCA he played all the solos the ones that Allen Collins played with Gary it was a killer show for them not to be the original line up especially without Ronnie Steve Gaines was a child prodigy it took to feel Ed's Shoes if it wasn't for Ed no reunion tour no one could have filled in for him in my humble opinion

You start the first turn around lick wrong like most people. According to Ed King who plays the strat on that song. You don't start the lick with a "A" . He starts it with an "A#" !

Great stuff. Everyone goes on about how amazing Ed King was but what about Gary?...after all he came up with the song in the first place as you outline in those arpegeos....also it was Gary who plays the first opening slide riff in the middle of the neck, leaving the D ringing on the 3rd string. Wonderful stuff, just don't think Gary gets the credit he deserves!

No sir, your yet another one making a video on how to play the song incorrectly. There's never a strum on the down beat of C or D. And your playing the intro wrong. Maybe your just playing it the way YOU like to play it, which is cool. Might mention that your instructing YOUR VERSION of a song so folks don't take ya wrong and learn to play the song wrong.
