Deaf and hearing couple who struggle between Hearing and Deaf Culture to decide whether or not to give their deaf son a cochlear implant. The truth about Deaf Culture.(You can open Auto English Subtiles from KZbin (Gear) menu) "KULAĞIMDAKİ TATLI SÖZLER" (Türkiye Gösterim Adı: Kulağımdaki Düşman)

Jeff Daniels was awesome in this role..it had to be difficult for him to learn ASL just for the part..equally as difficult for Marlee Matlin because even tho she is really deaf she does use her speaking voice in all other movies so having the voiceover speak for her had to be frustrating for her..i think both parents were selfish by only looking at their own point of view and by never even asking Adam if he were given the opportunity to have his hearing restored if he would even want to. The judge and therapists and Drs should have asked the child first. The ending is frustrating because it left no closure at all. I suppose the viewer is suppose to draw their own conclusions, but maybe the surgery wasnt what it was all about to begin with. Its about being a family and accepting each other the way we are in this life. This was a far dif topic than what society today is dealing with. Now its deciding over changing the physical anatomy of a child thats born biologically one way to a totally dif one. Times sure have gotten complicated.

Adam will probably resent his parents for not giving him a fair chance at hearing again since he’s still a kid and his brain will respond better to the cochlear implant.

I love this movie, I love Marlee Matlin, she's my favorite Deaf actress. It was pretty cool 😎 seeing Deann Bray from Sue Thomas F.B EYE in the movie and Shoshana Stern and Ed Waterstreet and Phyllis Frelich, too. I didn't know that Noah Valencia was Deaf in real life until I looked it up on Google. Jeff Daniels did a great job learning ASL for this movie.

The mother said she was afraid of losing him, as some mothers her interest is to keep him needing her... She mentioned him as a baby, she doesn't want him to grow up and participate in society fully where she is not there. These mothers are negative towards their child's future. Luckily, they are few. Life is to be enjoyed fully for its sake and the child's sake. It is not about society, it is about how a child will be the rest of his life.

Thank you for your comments. Implants bring so many problems and danger along with it in their daily life. Also surgery completely destroys the remaining little functions in the ear which they didn't put this info into the movie. It is a blind luck for Deaf person can able to hear after the surgery and cannot be removed if not give any benefit. And only made for people whose ears totaly not function (sort of). As i am Hearing person living with Deaf, I recommend please watch Swithched at Birth series. Its on Apple TV but you can also watch free on Stremio. It is a lovely and really funny series which also shows what it means for being Deaf and Deaf culture in more depth. Better understanding mother's decision and it shows why Deaf people do not (can not) see themselves as disabled.Thanks.

Wow what a rift this decision has made in a family including friends, having to change schools and the entire family, Botha sets grandparents. Adam sees this in way all are interacting differently with anger being prevalent where it wasn’t happening as often. Yes they probably had difficulties before but now it is happening more. They are talking custody I think and Adams world would surely be worse being torn back and forth between parents. if that should be the end result. Before they smiled had good repoire but now it is so confusing and he sees this and is sad. As usual no easy answers to such a difficult situation.

When I read your comment before I watched the movie, I was agreeing with you to talk to Adam about it. But when I saw the reaction that his mother had when he talked & I could see that he refused to talk to his Grandmother because of his mother's response, he would of turned it down because of his mother. Adam saw that it upset his mother, so how could he want something that would hurt her again.

Unfortunately, it is putting too much pressure on a young child who would sense that his mother wants to keep him as is, as well as his grandfather. And any kid is afraid of change and especially surgery.

Do you mean you are looking forward to learning American Sign Language (ASL)? You likely know this, but when a person is deaf, it doesn't mean they are "dumb," or mute or can't talk. A fair number can speak, I've had numerous deaf friends that spoke.

Its not politically correct and its very disrespectful to use the term "deaf and dumb".its a horrendous term used back in the days before deaf and non speaking people had rights and werent considered equal.

At first I didn't want to watch this, seeing the scene with the woman having no sound & people were doing things that make noise. I wouldn't want to be in that kind of world, because you would be missing so many good things in life. But I hung in there & I watched the movie anyways. I thought the movie was good, but there was a riff between the husband & wife about the implant. Both of them had their own views, so they disagreed with each other. I still like the movie, but we don't know what choice will be made in the end.

Well, I sure learned something. I had no idea there was such a thing as deaf prejudice. I just hate the stubbornness, obstinacy, and selfishness of the mother and her father. I worked with a man who became totally blind as an adult and I had a female friend who was born blind. The man who lost his sight did everything he could to get his sight back but couldn’t. He was used to being independent and overcame huge obstacles to become again as independent as humanly possible-even traveling internationally alone-but he didn’t pretend for a minute that he wasn’t disabled. The woman had never experienced the freedom of having sight. She thought she was being independent, learning Braille and the talking computer and getting around with her cane somewhat, but she had no idea how much other people had to do for her. She didn’t know what she didn’t know. She just took it for granted because she didn’t know anything different. My father lost his leg in a work accident. This was before there were such things things as hip transplants. He kept on providing for his family and built our house from scratch, digging the foundation and the septic tank hole with a shovel while crawling from place to place on the ground and climbing a ladder to shingle the roof, leaving his crutches below. He overcame huge obstacles but not a minute went by that he didn’t yearn to have his leg back. I remember being with him when I was a tiny child, stepping one step at a time beside him as he, dressed in suit and tie, dragging his crutches and brief case with him, sat on his bottom from step to step going down the immense flight of concrete steps outside the Library of Congress building. He didn’t pretend for a minute that he wasn’t disabled. In this movie, the utter narcissism of the mother and her father in being unwilling to provide the child with an available advantage is infuriating. I know this is just a story but it seems to be presented as based on real events. I was disappointed in the ending because I wanted the mother to get over herself and do what was best for the child and have some empathy for the husband’s feelings.

Thinking she did. Maybe it was more anout the husband rushing ahead before actually talking with her first anout it. After all marriage is a partnership. As in all partnerships decisions are made TOGETHER. isn't it possible that his sole rush to action brought about most of the conflict we seen in this movie. Am sure as a spouse myself, would be upset to duscover hubby made major plans for us about family without with out discussing it with me first. Think she said something to that effect in the begining.

@@kathrynbravo5402 I believe so. I am living with Deaf. They afraid about the cons of Cochlear Implants and it is a Deaf Culture that they don't think being Deaf is disability. And the reason is logical; They think hearing society organizes the whole world according to their own comfort. (Announcements on trains, buses, stations, airports, videos, tv channels all rely on visual on audial). When the Deaf couldn't adjust it, he/she will be disabled. What if all has added Sign Languages and subtitles (like other oral languages)

Incredibly disappointing that the production chose to use a voice artist to overdub Marlee’s voice. Talk about absurd prejudice in action! I had to stop watching, I found it that distracting & annoying. Too bad, and truly stupid for a group of people bringing a movie regarding the deaf community interactions with the hearing world… stupid.
