Absolutely loved sweet, had their posters on my bedroom wall. Taped loads of their songs on to a little cassette player/recorder, can remember sitting with my fingers on the play and record buttons waiting for their songs to play. Very under rated band in the uk, no idea why as people loved their music. I still listen to them today, obviously slightly up market, I play KZbin through my very powerful sound system, they sound great, I also have their cd albums in my car to play. My youngest kids, (18 and 19) sing along to their songs like I did back in the day! Their music will live on and I’m so glad I was around when they were hitting the charts. Commercially speaking, they don't have to complain, with several number one hits in their own country and a lot of success abroad. Brian Connolly was as important to the Sweet, as, for example, Jim Morrison was to the Doors. He had the voice and charisma, and couldn’t be replaced. “Level Headed” was truly the Sweet’s swan song.
@frschaddelee4 жыл бұрын
As a Doors fan, I don't completely agree. Jim wrote most of the lyrics (although Robby Krieger also wrote a lot of their hits) and he was the center of attention. For Sweet, it was more divided. Brian was amazing but he didn't contribute a lot lyrically (especially after 1975). The other members had their fan following as well. A Doors without Jim Morrison is unthinkable as he was the key ingredient, while Sweet can certainly exist if they keep their overall sound (high vocals, melodic guitar, etc.) even though it's very hard to replace Brian.
@dontommaso27604 жыл бұрын
It is an interesting comparison. Though neither Jim nor Brian were the main songwriters (musically speaking, not lyrics) the songwriting went downhill in both bands after the main singers left. I find the songs on The Door's two albums without Jim (Other Voices and Full Circle) pretty dull. Likewise, Sweet's first album as a three-piece - Cut Above The Rest is void of any good and memorable songs. Water's Edge and Identity Crisis had some good tracks (the title tracks come to mind), but nowhere near the level when Brian was still in the band.
@caryheuchert4 жыл бұрын
Don Tommaso - Brian, like Jim, had a very distinctive voice. Even though Andy and Steve could sing well enough, I wish Brian would have sung on more tracks on “Level Headed”. It would have been an even better album.

Always loved Ballroom Blitz, Fox on the Run, Action and a few other singles (loved the songs, wasn't even sure who played them, sadly - I was into thrash and grunge especially). Now, at 49, I'm finally bingeing on Sweet greatness. This one and Lost Angels are hitting me hard in the feels, especially.

What a great track. Sweet very much made their way with so-called popular music. But hidden in there was what Sweet was really all about.

I was 16 years old when 'Level Headed' came out. Aside from 'Love Is Like Oxygen', I just didn't get the album and what Sweet were trying to do musically with all the songs. No matter how much I listened to it back then, my 16 year old head just couldn't wrap itself around it. Especially after having 'Give Us A Wink', and 'Off The Record' being the two albums coming just before it. As an older guy I appreciate the 'Level Headed' album much more than I was able to at age 16.

Shows how good rock and progressive instumentation can turn a relatively simple ( but sweet,er,Sweet) song into a masterpiece. Great slide/lead guitar, good bass ( and mixed so you can hear the damn thing) Mick Tuckers colorful drumming that's so much more than just timekeeping. +,+, that magical harpsichord ( right though the song, not just the end).

I love Andy and I think he's very talented however I love Brian on Leads. I think they all have great voices but I feel this song was made when the band was starting to go in different directions. Brian, Andy, Steve and Mick make the Sweet work. The music is very good in this song. I just miss Brian on Lead Vocals

I believe in what Steve has said before, in so many words, that it was designed by Andy to drive Brian out of the group. The solution should have been to put the brakes on the touring for a year, or so to get Brian some help, and defuse some of the tension in the band from the non stop touring. Who knows how big Sweet could have been in the '80s with a sober Brian still as lead singer. It would have been great to have seen Sweet in the Live Aid concert.

@@blackmore4 I don't bother about the words.... I like listening to good music melody harmony power accompanied by good vocals. When you like a tune.....!!!!!!! words are irrelevant you buy an album because you love the music.

Still fantastic music. Great melodies, very good harmony vocals and powerful rock arrangements. And everyone an expert on his instrument. And what a beautiful and beneficial insight: Today I appreciate this music even more than I did 50 years ago. I am happy and very glad that this music has so much space in my life. Greetings from 🇩🇪
