That was a really good exchange! In a duet drummers have to really be able to listen closely to not get in the way, yet freely to work with the open spaces being given.. Its different than playing drums with a guitar, piano, bass... etc. Each drummer has to get out of the way of the other, yet compliment what the other is spontaneously playing.

Marvin McQuitty should be mentioned when it comes to major influence of Gospel drummers that had their own major influences and contributions to Gospel music. Wonder why he does not come up when Calvin is on the subject.

I have always thought there is a difference in noise when you are sloppy versus clean. you can hit the drums and get that tone.....just be clean. controlling the cymbals and mainly the hats help as well

American drummer always talk about hitting hard, what about playing the room ? It's weird for me to see "hard hitting" as a quality like a lot of US drummers seems to see it, hey, why not...
@yourbuddykevin3 жыл бұрын
who talked about hitting hard?
@RogerBiwandu3 жыл бұрын
@@yourbuddykevin Nick, when he starts to talk to Calvin, he says that he's amazed how hard Calvin hits the drums.
@ewilliams15943 жыл бұрын
Depending the type of music you are playing, you may need to hit hard. However, Calvin has very good dynamics and plays to the artist. That's why so many artist request him.

If you didn't grow up playing in church? Everything he's doing will be completely foreign to you.
