I was about to buy the fp30 or or may be the fp60 for home, mostly piano playing. Is this a good alternative that I should consider? Does it have the same keyboard action?
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hello! The FP30 and FP60 are both excellent home pianos. The FP60 does have a deeper variety of sounds, and the internal speakers are a bit more powerful and substantial than the FP30. They share the same PHA4 88 key weighted piano keybed. The RD-88 on the other hand is a different style instrument - it is more of a stage piano than a home piano. It has the same PHA4 keybed as the two above, but a more intentional integration with Mainstage for live playing, plus control of multiple zones for different simultaneous sounds. If you're playing in a band, the RD-88 is right for you. But if you're looking to practice piano at home, you'd be more inclined towards the FP series. How’s the action? I use an Old RD-1000 and I’ve never found an action I like better. It came out in 1986, so things have changed since then! It’s weighted but light and super fast. My biggest concern is the weight of the action. I hate a heavy action. The Yamaha P-155 and its successors were terribly heavy. And I never cared for them. The only thing keeping me from buying the RD-88 is this concern. Could you shed some light? It would be greatly appreciated!

With the exception of the Acoustic Pianos, which have a bit of a short decay as my only complaint, and are ok, but many of the sounds are a bit whimpy, acceptable but not stand out... will do the job if you have nothing better, or cannot afford to spend more... I think it will sell in loads, its a Roland, it will be reliable, and for the most part, for those playing live, there are already many challenges to face, such as the room, and quality of monitors and all the other issues that come along with every event, that it could just be the ticker for those who cannot afford an RD2000. In a live setting, for a gigging musician starting out, the whimpiness of the majority of sounds will not be too glaring, and on a positive note, compared with the Yamaha CP88, this one has lots of sounds....enough variety to find something that will be useful, most of these are probably rehash of Rolands pedigree - remastered, reprogrammed... Will do the job, sound wise not spectacular in general, like a decent General MIDI keyboard......... My comments may seem a bit harsh, cos I comparing it to the best that is available such as sampled instruments on a computer, or Nord Piano or the Roland RD2000. Obviously to bring it down to a price point, corners have been cut, and any attempt to step into the market segment of the RD2000, its bigger brother, have been avoided. I detect a certain brevity in the samples, very little natural modulation or variety or velocities, in the original samples, lots of looping, to fit in within a memory size...... The only other competition IMHO is Rioland's FP90 which is about the same price(give or take $200 more ) ...would be interesting to compare them side by side in a store..../demo room....

I am just trying to upgrade from a Privia PX-5s that is starting to fail me. I do study classic/jazz but also have quite a synth den that needs it's "thick" Master Controller. Fully Hammer-Action, acoustic piano like keybed is what I need. Do you think this would be a good upgrade for the casio?
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Miguel! Hope your 2021 is off to a great start. That's a great question. In my opinion, the weighted key action on the RD-88 and the PX-5S is pretty similar in terms of quality, but the instruments definitely do feel different. Roland has a bit of a heavier weighting in general compared to Casio or Yamaha. The RD-88 also features escapement on the keybed, which can be important if you're a pianist. Where is the speakers ? In the keyboard?

Looks great. Impressive playing too. Are there at least three independant zones, or is it just split plus layer on the right?
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hello! The RD-88 is indeed an impressive instrument! It has three independent zones: Lower, Upper1, and Upper2, each with their own independent tone and volume controls - check out p12 of the manual for details: static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/RD-88_eng01_W.pdf Stay safe and healthy out there, Nick LaMendola, Senior Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1660, nick_lamendola@sweetwater.com

@@sweetwater Thanks. I've never owned an RD, but I've played trumpet in several bands where the pianist really held his own on an RD. We can compare sounds and actions in isolation, but a good instrument is much more than the sum of its virtues (Hmmm, could I be the first to coin that phrase?) and the bottom line is that RDs work brilliantly in bands. Now that there's an RD I can actually carry, it is a bit tempting.

Nice sound. Is the sound we're hearing from it's own internal speakers or external ones? If so, what sort of speaker/s are you using? Thanks

Internal. Two small ones on top and two large ones hidden underneath.

Linda, he stated at the end of the video that he was MONITORING with the speakers, but the signal was coming from the line outputs.

Hi, can you record audio with vocals directly to the usb flash drive? Thanks!
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest! The RD-88 cannot record audio to the flash drive. It's there to allow you to play existing backing tracks through the digital piano. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you have further questions! Caleb Lowrey, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1620, caleb_lowrey@sweetwater.com

Would you please make a comparison between Roland RD-88 and Casio Privia PX-S3000? I plan to buy one of these two.
@alicaramba76804 жыл бұрын
Roland RD88 is more professional instrument. PXS3000 is more for hobbyists. RD88 costs 25 % more. RD88 has physical controls, PXS3000 has a few on hard to reach far right side. If you care about piano playing (keyboard quality), RD88 is a clear winner here. If you plan to use/keep instrument for a long time (10 years) again RD88 is a better value here. Rolands are better build quality and RD88 design will not age that fast. PXS3000 looks fancier if it is a selling point for you. Also, PXS3000 has onboard 3 part midi recorder and Auto Accompaniment function, RD-88 doesn't. Besides, if you care about piano sound and keyboard only, you probably should check cheaper Kawai ES 110 or Yamaha P-125.

@@alicaramba7680 Wow, thanks a lot for your clear explanation and definition on each of them. I think I will go for an RD-88 then : )
@alicaramba76804 жыл бұрын
@@naomiigashima9443 Keep in mind, both keyboards are pretty different when you delve deeper in specs. For example, RD88 can not receive midi messages. Of course, I don't know if you even know what I'm talking about, how deep you know keyboards, are you a beginner, are you performer or a home user, maybe you buying a keyboard for children, who knows? But for some people I know some minor looking missing features could be a deal breaker. Of course, if you just want to play patches (layered, split) both keyboards will do. Good luck with your next keyboard.

midi 2.0 will only be able to be transmitted in usb C or usb 3.0 can also transmit? my computer only has usb 3.0 available because the usb c input is already being used by the audio interface
@Jason759132 жыл бұрын
USB 3 ports should be able to transmit, USB C is USB 3.1, just a USB 3 with different connector, for the most part.

Hey, Sandra! Thanks so much for the interest in the RD-88. It does have Roland's PHA-4 weighted hammer action, which has adjustable touch sensitivity, as well. Can you input a midi file song and just use this piano for its synth?
@sweetwater Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest! The RD-88 doesn’t have a MIDI player built in, nor does it have a MIDI DIN input. However, you could connect a host device such as a computer or tablet over USB and use the USB-MIDI functionality to play MIDI files through the RD-88’s sound generator. I hope this helps - feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again! Caleb Lowrey, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1620, caleb_lowrey@sweetwater.com

I feel that the keys are too hard, after practicing for some time my fingers hurt, could it be because the bottom of the keys is very hard? I have one unit almost a year with me, the sound is very good, the only issue is the keys.
@johnnyparker21284 жыл бұрын
You probably don’t have the answer to this but how do you access expansions after they have been installed? Most Roland keyboards have an EXP button but the RD-88 doesn’t.
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Roland does allow you to save and export sounds from their keyboards onto a USB thumb drive, and there's a rectangular USB A port on the back of this RD-88 for that purpose. That being said, I don't know of many keyboards with an "expansion" button - if you're seeing an EXP jack on the back of a keyboard, that's typically meant for an expression footpedal.
