Sweetwater's Guitars and Gear, Vol. 125
Mitch Gallagher sits down with guitar virtuoso Carl Verheyen for a special interview in Sweetwater's Studio A. Carl has visited Sweetwater numerous times to help with our in-house recording workshops, performing in the studio while our producer Mark Hornsby runs the session from the control room.
Carl shares some thoughts on arranging songs for his band, the recording process, writing music on his Pro Tools rig at home, his gear, how to use a guitar's B-string to learn how "live" the guitar is, and much more. Much of Carl's personal guitar gear can be seen around the studio, and he gives us some insights on what he uses and why.
One thing that was interesting to see are some of the different acoustic and electric guitars Carl uses to achieve a wider tonal range on his recordings. When layering guitars, it really helps to have different instruments that complement each other sonically, and Carl has a very enviable collection of instruments in that regard.

What a great interview. Carl is just top notch and a lot of the interviewers out in KZbin land can take a lesson or two from Mitch!

I have to say Mitch Gallager is an excellent interviewer, he always asks questions that makes the person he interviews think, resulting in a much more in-depth comprehensive result.

Thanks! Great session! Carl is such a nice guy as well as a monster player. Met him at GearFest last year and he graciously signed my Tele.

Mitch your interviews are excellent because you focus on the person you are interviewing and do not talk about yourself - so many interviewers use the platform to be sycophants and to try and market themselves "I" "I" I"" - so you are appreciated for your skill land professionalism. Carl is, in my estimation, the very top of the guitar players in the world and I would choose his skill set over any other.

I met Carl during a break at a show he did near Harrisburg, PA around 10 years ago. At that show he favored the green\blue Strat he shows in the video. He told a small group of us the Seymour Duncan Strat pickup story. He was so friendly. If you ever see him live and get the chance, ask him to play the song that's impossible to sing and play at the same time. He can sing and play it. It's amazing. He's amazing.

So happy he finally got the cover of GP magazine and is getting the recognition he deserves. I think the recent Sweetwater activity may have a lot to do with that. Congrats.

Superbly done Mitch! So many guys get the opportunity to sit down with a great player and their ego or insecurity gets the better of them. So they spend the whole time trying to impress the guest with THEIR knowledge and end up interrupting the flow of ideas and shutting them down. But Mitch showed his a VERY confident, classy guy by avoiding ALL that and just chipped in as appropriate to keep Carl's thoughts flowing, much to our benefit. Outstanding! Carl Verheyen, what can you say? A real player's player. He will forget more about music than most of us will ever learn! So generous with his ideas, approach, philosophy, you could listen to those words in 45mins, but take a lifetime of reflection to realise them in life. Thanks Carl. I was listening through some studio cans and it felt so much like the third guy in the room, that when he sent the head of the V, "flying" onto the Gibson acoustic, I literally flinched swore out loud as if someone had bumped him and it could've been me! (Maybe his new nickname should be Carl: "Flying V" Verheyen.. Ha!) Anyways, I've dropped a lot of dough at Sweetwater over the years, but for me, over and above great deals, these vids provide a gratifying reason to keep supporting what you guys are doing. Thanks again Mitch and all the team at Sweetwater, brilliant!

Waiting, waiting, waiting,...finally at 42:58. Not that I wanted it, but flinging all those guitars around with that Gibson J-50 sitting off close to Carl's left, I just felt it would happen. But great interview. Great guitar collection. Carl must live and breath guitar 24x7.

Yes it almost looks like a real one too Carl Just kidding :) what a great interview You can tell he plays all of them and has just a purpose for each. The 59 chet when he said dark or really dark and mentioned wooden ships I heard it in my head instantly that dark lead part never knew how they got it till now.. I guessed the 3 tone strat was 64 mid to late transition logo but its Jan 65 dots looked pearl to me threw me.. The repaint strat in 61 I think Leo was still sending them out to be painted at car shop there near them.. Alfredo has been painting at fender since 63 Its possible they sent that out had them shoot over sunburst and if they did they would stamp it in the pickup route or control area or just under guard they would route or drill in what color Lake placid LP might initial the paint color and they did this to show it had been sent back to do factory refinish.. I think they sent this one to car shop near fender shop and just had them shoot what ever blue they had this looks spearmint green to me Sea foam would have to turn real yellow in clears He said the mentioned Daphne thats more robins egg blue.. Surf Green might turn that color its more likely they did a one off and it was just a dark surf green and they might have shot clears in the acrylic just to make it glossy so customer wont complain and they buffed it out and it just came out that color over time . Like to see under guard.. I have a sea foam 61 reissue its lighter Daphne blue is robins egg blue different color Surf Green turns mint color spearmint green and if it was a cross of that color or what they were shooting that day then thats why its a bit different looking..
