Well LadyHawk❤...we just might be looking at a miracle child here. I don't know. First , M defies all odds against him with his situation earlier this year, and now this? I see a mom & dad continuing to persevere in their efforts to incubate this little one also in hopes of defying the odds in a successful hatch. Who am I to to be pessimistic in the face of the persistent and optimistic instincts of 'Mighty M' and 'Mama Maybellene'. We shall soon see how their full story unfolds. 💓🙏🦅🦅🥚🥚

I raise Monarch Butterflys and sometimes during hatching they get partially stuck in their chrysalis. When that happens and IF I see it in time, I get my tweezers out and tear off the super thin chrysalis skin. Sometimes I'm too late and one wing remains damaged limiting their ability to fly but mostly my assistance makes all the difference. Watching Egg #2 struggle to hatch makes me want to reach in their and help peel away the shell.

Oh, Lady Hawk, God Bless you & all whom such beautiful nature with us. I love all your videos. But, my husband keeps telling me to stop crying as 1 eaglet hatch but my heart aches. Why did the shell crack as it did, many questions & so sad. Lady Hawk, I remember Queen Harriet lost eaglets also but where do they lay their eaglet to rest. Is it within the nest cause seeing M15 & F23 still cuddle both E23 & egg 2 beneath them blows my heart to pieces. I am going to parrot/repeat what I posted on one of LH's vid from yesterday: If an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends. If an egg is broken by an inside force, then life begins. Great things can happen from the inside. *Lets hope for a E23 before this year is over and E24 for the New Year of 2024* !! 🦜🤞🏻 How great would that be.

There could be something in it what you just said... That first tiny hole we saw, did not look like a pip but a chip from the outside. Perhaps that started off this hatching process, and as is,that happened just a few days too early - meaning our little darling has to work extra hard, against the odds. I'm also thinking how the second eggs are often males, who are a little smaller than the females, so maybe that's also a factor here. So much we may never know, just thinking out loud. All we can do is hope and wish or pray for the strength for these tiny darlings! 💚

The shell is cracked or broken before the embryo has fully developed inside. The shell becomes thinner and more fragile as the incubation period proceeds because the chick absorbs some of the calcium into its developing bones. If an incubating parent moves suddenly in response to an unexpected event like an intruder or human disturbance, it might breach the shell. Parental missteps are rare, even in situations that appear to be violent on cam. Hatching failure Another cause of egg loss is hatching failure, when a chick begins the hatching process but dies before it is able to fully emerge. Hatching is strenuous work that requires intense effort. Several of the risks described above can make hatching difficult or impossible. Other circumstances that can lead to hatching failure are: Rupture of the chorioallantoic membrane that lines the eggshell, which can damage the capillaries embedded in it and cause blood loss, or can lead to infection. (Snelling 1972, 1303) This may be one reason parents avoid assisting in hatching except sometimes near the end of the process when the membranes are already breached (Brua 2002); Accidental damage by a parent or sibling before hatch is complete; A “capped shell,” where a large part of shell from a previously hatched egg slips over the large end of the hatching egg, forming a double layer of shell that the chick might not be able to break through.
