E23 has become very independent and confident at the young age of 113 days. (E23 still needs the adults to provide his/her food as he watches and learns from them about finding food.) E23 spent the night in the nest tree (where he/she usually does) while M15 & F23 perched away. E23 dropped to the nest going through nestovers that he/she did get food from. The shrike was 'pestering' E23 while eating. When E23 flew to the church snag, the shrike continued to strike at E23. The shrikes (Loggerhead Shrike) and other smaller birds like the Blue Jays, Mockingbirds and Grackles 'pester' all the eagles (and other larger birds) as the smaller birds have nests and offspring nearby to protect just as M15 and F23 protect E23. So being 'pestered' is an every day occurrence for all birds, small as well as large. Before I left the nest area, our independent E23 flew north to explore and most likely look for Mom & Dad.
