Greetings From Montréal, Québec, Canada !!! I work in the cleaning business and altough these ideas are FANTASTIC on HOW TO ' Not fall into the OVER/Consumming Trick, instead of buying the 'Swiffer WET JET', do has I do; Just buy the Microfiber Stick/Pad, (and a few EXTRA pads when the 1st one is being washed) and I keep a spray bottle to your belt/pocket, spray the flloor and just sweep normally !!! Another way/trick to save money !!!

I crochet mine too. I designed my own, and used a deep rib stitch and a double yarn combo of cotton and acrylic yarns for each pad. The cotton yarn is there for saturation and absorption and the acrylic is there for better scrubbing abilities. I used coordinating colors just for fun but it doesn’t really matter…no one sees them but me. But, being anal about colors, I was lucky and found both types of yarn in a variegated purple and turquoise color way that looks really cool on the mop head, lol! I made a set of three and rotate them in the laundry so that I always have a clean one ready. Crocheted them years ago and they’re still going.

No detriment to trying to save money but I was raised by a Scottish immigrant. I told her later when I was older that if I looked up the meaning of recycle I'd see a picture of her face. I drew the line as a kid using my dads old tightie whities for dusting! We have an entire house of vynl planks so I looked to find washable solutions. Plus moved to an area with like 4 kinds of dust, cotton wood trees, key word being cotton! I found auto static cloths in Harbor freight. White fluffy, not just microiber, they keep static. I only ever use these dry. The size allows me to cut 3 from one and the 3 pack was about $4. it does make them a bit skinny. If I buy mmore I may just cut two and hem elastic around as I sew. We also have rocks on our floor from high desert sand which is very difficult to get up. Have to be careful not to grind into floor in the cleaning process or even walking. I push to side and go back to sweep up the piles. We both got hurt this last month so when floor is really bad I use the shop vac. No vaccum we have picks up the rocks and not much of the light dust, hence using the static cloths. For mopping I just cut old towels or juse shop rags. We first tired the more washcloth looking ones at Walmart but too loopy, catch on corners and shred a bit. Bought the blue ones. Much better and a bit of cling. I had been given packs of the regular microfiber cloths but not enough actual "pick up" of dirt in the cloth to mop. I then mix whatever cleaner I need in a spray bottle. You are not to get vinyl plank floors too wet. I also realized that the recommended natrual solution of Pine Sol and dawn and water didnt work. One of the known home remodel guys recommened it? It seemed like I was putting dirt back on. Then read a blog by a guy saying why. Pine Sol is the wrong PH for these floors. I was magnetizing dirt back on! He recommended just a normal ph cleaner like Fabuloso and dawn and hot water. You only need like a teaspon or less in a large spray bottle. It totally worked. I checked with my home made swiffer and nothing left on the floor. Which by the way, the same thing happened with store bought swiffers. I used liek 10 each time mopping as it was just magnetizing the dirt back on! The floors are much easier to mop using those static cloths. As noted Im not undermining alternate solutions. Our house is odd. Oh the planks are that Life Proof from Home Depot. Maybe it just gets more static? Our house odd too. Artist built it. We have a 20 foot peaked house with a 64 foot long skylight. The spider webs got away from us this year and the cold and extra long winter has had them come in too! We bought a long extensio pole and I saw a lady take the end of the handle version swiffer duster and use the screw cap end of poles to stick it in. Lucky I had that type of cap on a shorter pole. We then bought the generic brand of 360 swiffer dusters as its spiders and their caught prey! Not gonna use anything washable. Going into a trash bag!

Do you rinse your reusable dry swiffer before throwing it in the wash? Especially if you have pets because of pet hair. Or do you just throw it in the wash and the hair isn't an issue in the washer? Cause I worry that if I threw it in with a load of towels that my towels would end up with dog hair on them.

I don't think Pine-Sol is good for hardwood floors, though. How do you keep the Swiffer bottle from leaking after you've opened it to put in your own cleaner? I've read comments on other hack videos and on Facebook that say the bottle leaks if you open it. I store my Swiffer WetJet upside down because I had a bottle leak on me once.

There is a warning to be added here. Detaching and reattaching the cleaning solution will only work for a short while until the motor gets rusted and freezes. Each time you reattach the cleaning bottle, small needles poke through the rubber cover so that the solution can be pumped to the floor. However the second time you refill your container, new holes are punched. As a result, the motor will eventually freeze due to the solution running down into the mechanism. I've ruined two Swifters this way. A better solution would be to never remove the cleaning solution container and cut a hole in the top to refill it and tape it shut so it won't splash out. However you will always have to keep your mop upright forever and ever.

I think they make a lemon pinesol now too and it's a bit lighter in scent for those who might find the original pinesol a bit strong. Another hint that may not safe a lot of money but may be worth it is to use distilled water or demineralized water at about 80 cents to a dollar twenty per gallon. I've learned over the years when a product needing dilution requests or suggests you use distilled water to choose that option if you can. It once took me 9 days to strip a vinyl floor of old wax so I could switch to poly acrylic style shine products but wax has to go because it will cloud otherwise. I ignored the use distilled water option in the commercial concentrated stripper. Until about day 7 I was so tired of going over and over and much on my hand and knees and making a mess and not getting all the streaks out. I added distilled water and omgosh that was the trick. Two days later I had a stripped clean beautiful floor in both utilty and kitchen and two bloody knees that ended up scarring and have never fully recovered in 8 years since. So when a concentrated window cleaner said Distilled water works best I experiemented and sure enough distilled water did not streak while our extra Hard Well Water does. Also no worries bout chlorine if you are on city water too. I've been using pinesol for over 50 years including in my profession and was once challenged by another pathologist who insisted he would prove my lab was full of contaminated molds and bacteria. He was so upset his lab was and MINE was NOT to his amazement. To be fair his lab actually grew on purpose several types of molds for industrial field work and control in plant work while my lab in same company was about growing seeds for various testing and we didn't want to control what the plant material might bring into the lab so we cleaned everything with Pinesol and Lysol combinations thereof and no doubt in my mind these are what made his results of testing with agar plates in both labs with the superior idea he would prove how bad my lab was compared to HIS backfired. Ahh the male competitiveness sometimes us gals need to remind ourselves to remain humble as not to upset the fragile balance between the genders. Anyway Great demonstration of thinking outside the box with the Hack for removing the caps on the Swiffer Jet bottles. And another cool thing is you can now use any product that you favor from vinegar water or premade dilutions of your favorite cleaner to concentrated professional fomulas with your own dilutions. Merry Maids or something like that cleaned my lab years ago and used a cinnamon scented additive to the mop solution I've learned to make my own and now also use lemon and perppermint too. Of course cinnamon and peppermint might get lost in a pinesol or strong scented product but it's lovely in many options out there including vinegar. Or just the plain rinse water if you need to rinse. (Think essential oils and a drop or two will do it and not usually effect the floor or the cleaning products. These scents don't linger long but love it for the first day or two.)

I gave up on Swifer wet jets, after the second one crapped out on me. If they canlt make a product that lasts, that I don't have to buy over and over, and that won't end up in a landfill because it was designed not to last, then they aren't worthy of my consumer dollars.

This has saved me from having to buy a bona mop and takes you use the reusable cloth pad. My hand scraped wood floors have build up from using the swiffer products and were told by everyone to switch to bona hardwood floor cleaner. We’re also potty training a puppy and are mopping multiple times a day (unfortunately). So washing pads over and over would have been a real pain! Plus who wants to buy a second mop that already sprays cleaner?... so being able to open the swiffer bottle to put bona cleaner in it and use the mop I already have AND use the disposable pads because of the puppy accidents is WONDERFUL!!!!

Jim, get a fake Sham Wow from the Dollar store and they work better than microfiber. And you can cut 3 from one cloth. The Dollar Tree has had a "build your own broom" kinda setup for a few years now. They sell the metal handle and several different compatible attachments that you can swap out as needed. There's a broom head, mop head, sponge mop head, wet jet style head, and dry duster style head if I remember correctly. It's saved me soooooo much money and storage space!

interesting, I don't think we have Swiffer in Australia but we have plain spray mops and they are exactly what you hacked. they have a re-fillable plain bottle and they come with a couple washable velcro microfibre pads :)

Swifter was the original product, with disposable cloths and there are other brands to choose from, not only Swiffer. The copy cat products came along with microfiber cloths included and doesn't require batteries. That's the one I bought and love. I'm not a fan of disposables.

SOOOO M A D when I finally realized why my SWIFFER Motor stopped working. Especially knowing the reason why & Swiffer doesn't fix the Design Flaw. This "Disposable Society" we live in, filling our Earth w/Objects designed to break or become quickly obsolete is truly a horrifying reality. I REFUSED to ditch my broken Motor SWIFFER & also no longer use the overpriced, crappy Fluid they offer. I mix my own & put in a Large, easy to Pump SPRAY BOTTLE. I lightly spray over the area I'm going to Swiffer & Voila! Clean, shiny, fresh scented Floors using my now Light Weight (NO Bottle) SWIFFER. Granted, I'll admit it's "not as Fun" pressing the Button & hearing the "whirrr", but I REFUSE to pay another $40. (I buy Local so always a bit more $).

During the peak moving months by me, I find half or mostly full cleaning solution bottles. I must have eight stashed in my house by now. Swiffer products always wind up at the curb, inside or next to a refuse container--and still in usable too.

Not really saves money and time , with these pads we have to wash and dry ( we spend soap, water and electricity) then doing a separated load for these pads since they are dirty. Who is going to wash your undergarmets or pillowcases or sheets with pads full with cats hair, dogs hair, crumbs, foods, spilled milk... you named

The bottle in the hot water didn’t work for me but you could put a small funnel in the slit and pour in whatever cleaner you want. With the mop pads you can also not only mop the floor but clean your tub without bending. 😁

I dont have a swiffet yet but am buying one today.Can someone explain to me about the cap? Dont you have to remove the entire bottle with the cap on it anyway in order to replace with a new swiffer bottle? So whats the difference if you take it off and remove the cap and use your own solution and then reattach it to the swiffer? Thx
@KellyG4729
@KellyG4729 10 ай бұрын
@@babybear4524 the refill comes as one unit. Its nearly impossible to remove the cap. The container goes in cap facing down. Once the container is empty, take it out, puncture a hole in it and refill it with your cleaning solution. I cut the hole in the bottom of the container as that becomes the top once it's in the swiffer. The hole has to be big enough to allow another fluid to be put in it. I use a small funnel. It's confusing to read but you'll understand when you get one.

With the WetJet, what you are doing is excellent as the product they sell is toxic for animals as smething in it attacks their kidneys. Little dogs and cats mostly as this "soap" is not rinsed from the floor, pets are walking on the floor then lick their paws and get sick. We lost 2 cats like this 😢 and it is vets who told me about this. So just be careful... personally I make my cleaners with vinegar, water, a bit of isopropyl alcohol and few drops of essential oil (I love the spruce one, smell sooooo good) and my floors are super clean, shiny, no residues or strikes or dulness and safe for my pets. Vinegar is also disinfect and kills bacterias, germs, viruses and etc and spiders/ants/mice don't like the smell... but please, be careful with the original soap. PS: As I have the Bona mop/serpillère, I don't have a spray attached like yours so I have a spray bottle on the side and I spray my floor and everything works great
