Shakyamuni Buddha’s mantra is: Tadyatha Oṃ Muni Muni Mahāmuni śākyamunaye Svāhā.
Reciting this mantra can purify all negative karma, including those from forty thousand past lifetimes. Just one recitation can stop negative karmas from ripening and prevent their results, effectively cleansing all accumulated negative karma.
The following translation of the mantra is quoted from 'The Power of Mantra' by Lama Zopa Rinpoche:
Tadyatha: 'this contains'
Oṃ: Essence of all Buddha's knowledge. By actualizing the paths of method and wisdom, all gross and subtle defilements cease and our body, speech and mind are purified, becoming the vajra holy body, vajra holy speech and vajra holy mind of a buddha.
Muni: Shakyamuni Buddha’s name meaning "the subduer". It is repeated 3x, which relates to the graduated paths of the 3 capable beings who have respective aims of a higher rebirth, nirvana and enlightenment. This shows the route that the Buddha took over the countless great eons until he becomes enlightened, a route we all must take to achieve enlightenment.
Mahāmuni śākyamunaye: Great Control, signifies that Buddha completely overcame all duality between self and others and was able to fully see every single phenomenon. "Duality" refers to the human tendency to use language to categorize things into binary states and concepts that are opposites, such as: "victory and defeat, rationality and emotion, success and failure, goodness and evil, happiness and suffering, beauty and ugliness, intelligence and stupidity, active and passive, extroverted and introverted, wealth and poverty, hope and despair, movement and stillness, fullness and hunger, optimism and pessimism," and so on.
Svāhā: "So it is. May the blessings of Shakyamuni Buddha be rooted in my mind"
